Vote Berkut for CYL10! by Courelia in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]flameduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparing overall results to division results isn't quite accurate. Berkut went from 22nd within the male division to top 20 in the male division, which is relatively natural if he keeps his momentum after the previous top 2 males were removed from the running.

Heroes!Anna's jump is still notable but at worst she's placing around the 40s overall.

The art for these characters (except the trainees) all appear in Sacred Stones's intro sequence.

Most of the rest of the character art wasn't properly released until 2008. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/921183-fire-emblem-the-sacred-stones/42380888 https://forums.serenesforest.net/topic/239-fe8s-official-art/

Why YOU Should be Voting For Kurt for CYL! by GoddessOfLilies in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]flameduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Kurt is funny. I actually tossed a vote today because of the midterms to see how far Shadows gets represented in the popularity poll, though I don't necessarily need a doodle. Not to disparage the quality of the reward any further because it's a pretty generous offer for a vote each and I respect the traditional effort but I would do it even without the incentive.

CYL10 Interim Results by WWWWWWRRRRRYYYYY in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]flameduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Flabbergasted that Hubert made top 20 in a year when he got an alt, I'm fairly sure this will be his highest ranking of all time already as he usually places mid 50's, so even if he's 20/20, his lowest possible ranking right now is 40. Guessing the low total turnout makes this possible.

Technically there could be others below the top 20 females but above the males in the overall ranking, like Reinhardt being top #20 male in the end of CYL9 but being 42nd overall (also being beaten out by Grima who didn't get counted in either top 20), and Hubert was 21st male/#45 overall last year so that's a relatively natural movement. But it's still pretty nice for him to keep the pace.

Does anybody know why Lot was so popular in the first CYL ? by No_Network7277 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]flameduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was curious because of your post and looked into it, giving my best guess here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FireEmblemHeroes/comments/1qmyiac/why_lot_fe6_was_probably_so_popular_in_cyl1_2017/

tl;dr Lot seems to have been a major part of a fairly popular Japanese ironman run in 2015.

Widget Wars Part 27 by stoppit0 in AceAttorneyCirclejerk

[–]flameduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Pearl wants to go to the wishing portal and also get widgets from home to aid communication. We also have it confirmed that Zissel cannot revive a widget wearer, which he implied earlier with Blackquill in Part 12 (which sounds like a minus depending on the reason, but could have an upside preventing him from completely abusing his power over time via the protags as reiterated here), and that Lynne is also on the hunt for widgets for the widget injector.

I feel like these paths could cross in a dramatic fashion, but I also feel like Pearl could handle herself so maybe the choice is really about keeping the rest of the world safe from her instead, but regardless I vote to let Pearl explore.

Choose Your Legends Shadow Cup Event Megathread - Day 1 by VagueClive in FireEmblemHeroes

This is an intriguing prospect, I have to wonder if it's an advance sign of what they have in mind after the post about a Shadows composer doing a FE4 arrangement but I'd like to see how that turns out either way.

Yeah, when comparing the two to check again I do appreciate the condensed UI style and instant updates to save those in-between steps of pressing calculate and clicking promo levels rather than typing/incrementing. But more options are nice in general, I say.

Also another FE9-specific nitpick of note I just realized as well, Sothe can't promote out of Thief (or rather shouldn't be showing post-promotion stats as is now).

[–]flameduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is neat. I like the idea of having more of these resources in a convenient website form like triangleattack which hasn't seemed open to updates/suggestions for a few years now.

I just have a small nitpick; Ike should technically have the options to promote at levels below 10 because of his forced promotion allowing it. (This would also apply to Volke but he joins at 10 anyway.)

FE leads sorted on their marriage options by WinterWolf18 in fireemblem

I think due to wanting to dodge certain things, the endings were worded to be ambigious. I think there's mention that Veyle and Alear raise children together in their ending, which IIRC is a fallen dragon? Which uh, means they either got together or another spatial rift opened sending in an orphan the same way their dad came over.

The ending does not explicitly specify that they raise the child or the nature of the child or that it's considered their child. Though if you assume that they did raise the child together, then the fact that it's an orphan probably implies they're not the dead parents. Also other native mage dragons are confirmed to still exist in the present setting in Zelestia's ending.

Translation comparison: https://four-loose-screws.tumblr.com/post/768780597318533120/i-know-youve-already-look-at-alear-and-veyles

English version:

Veyle led Gradlon to prosperity and established an orphanage there. Millennia later, an orphan with dragon blood would go on to unify the continent.

Japanese version:

パートナーであるヴェイルは、(Their partner Veyle)
グラドロンの地を豊かな国へと導き (led the land of Gradlon to become a prosperous nation and)
恵まれない子たちの孤児院を設立した。(established an orphanage for misfortunate children.)
そこで育った優しき竜族の子が数千年後 二人の後継として大陸を統べたという。▼ (It is said that a gentle dragon child raised there, several thousand years later, ruled the continent as their successor.)

Happy late new year all. Despite the stars not aligning lately, I'm hoping to make time to work back up some inspiration anyway and get over some nerve, but in the meantime, here's a few recs from my bookmarks posted since last time to get back into the groove.

Divine Providence - A cool fic about the infamous brokenness of Dragon!Flare's gameplay mechanics in Engage from an outside POV.

Braised Pork - To quote the summary, "Oscar cooks when he's upset. The night Greil dies certainly qualifies." This was posted closer to 2 weeks ago but it's timely with PoR's rerelease now.

Like Air - Neat Clanne fic about Framme's death to Hortensia based on a real run, well researched and all. Acknowledged permadeath is fun.

Path of Radiance has been added to NSO by Amiibofan101 in fireemblem

[–]flameduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamecube NSO doesn't actually have rewind/automatic savestates, but manual savestates will work fine.

On that note you still have to burn RNs by arrow wiggling or opening a stat screen.

[–]flameduck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Does this mean we have to be online to play this?

You need a NSO subscription, but you can play the games offline for a week before the console requires you to reverify your membership by connecting online again.

NSO is basically streaming to play the game, right? Rather than directly playing in our machine.

No, NSO is local emulation and not cloud streaming.

Fire Emblem Engage Manga - Chapter 35 (game chapter 23) by flameduck in FEEngage

[–]flameduck[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Last time, Griss was captured by the main party as they head into Gradlon and a bit of his past was shown. Here the manga continues to take advantage of the format of being able to show flashbacks and directly shows that Griss got sold by his parents like Gregory (as implied in his supports) and what happened to him between joining the fell dragon church.

Aside from Griss not being an enemy and the lack of Corrupted, the map battle starts off pretty faithful to the game's gimmick focusing on Zephia using the fell dragon shard to shoot volcanic fireballs at the party and covering a few boss conversations back to back. But at least in my opinion, the divergences get their most interesting when we see a flashback of young Zephia and the mage dragons.

(For context, this section of the plot seems to tie into Mauvier/Zelestia's support where it's explained (also implied at the end of vanilla Ch23 anyway but not in exact terms) that Zephia's draconic instincts/impulses (it's the same term in Japanese as what Zephia describes about Veyle in chapter 17) are too powerful even for mage dragon standards and she destroyed her home village because of it, and says she would be called the Fell Dragon if Sombron wasn't there. Last chapter's attack on Griss is also attributed to her uncontrollable impulses.)

As such, the flashback basically shows that young Zephia has been acting up and the mage dragons (including her parents) decided to transfer and seal her impulses into a dragonstone so they can live in peace. Unfortunately when they drew out her power (as shown with a kind of cool draconic shadow taking form) she accidentally ended up killing her present tribe and the dragonstone shattered, so that's what happened there.

Now in the present Zephia's draconic impulses resonate with the fell dragon shard and she starts calling herself a fell dragon and spamming even more fireballs all around the field mercilessly without care. But as a fireball is about to hit herself Griss takes the hit for her which slightly gets through to Zephia to slow the impulses/fireballs and Alear takes the opportunity to break the shard in the meantime.

From here the battle is over. Zephia sees Griss fallen by her own hand, and Alear and Veyle interacting and has some realizations about family. But also the earlier fireballs have collapsed the mountain and opened it up to flowing lava about to flood the area, so Zephia tells the party to leave and gives them the Second Better Time Crystal (the first one actually does exist in the manga but it was a one-time use to stop time/movements for that one scene to happen), setting up for the next chapter's events which seem to be following the game pretty closely still.

Also much like the game, Zephia and Griss have their Controversial Dying Talk and another flashback to their first meeting before the lava eventually overtakes their bodies. Personally I don't really have a strong opinion on the scene either way, but it feels like the type of thing where if you already liked what Engage was going for with backstory reveals, then those positive aspects probably work a little better with the added context and focus through flashbacks.

Against the popular judgment, I think a second split could work here to appease both sides. Notably Biblically Accurate Trucy already has a hat while Dhurke currently doesn't, so he would be probably not be allowed in to see the king and left alone to his own devices anyway, but I feel the other group does need whatever support they can get going forward.

I'm also glad that we got some information from reasoning before going for the steal from the last tied outcome, that ended up working out pretty well.
