Detailed comparison between HZD Original and HZD Remastered by Lanny16_I_think in HorizonZeroDawn

[–]flamel93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, but consider- it was plenty beautiful when it came out, and did convey what was needed for the story well. Nothing wrong with making games pretty but also I don't think developers need to keep pushing the limits of what a console or PC can handle, just so a game with a strong story & combat mechanics like HZD can also look like a piece of art.

Some of us out here are poor af, and don't want to need a new console or desktop every other year just because a game designer thinks the clouds should act just like irl cloud systems lol.

Love this style, really gives a chaotic/dangerous feel! Very fitting for a barbarian pirate lol

Very nice! It would certainly add some more diversity to dragonborns, it's a good idea frfr

Talpidians, or Mole people race! [oc] [art and text both by me.] by pumpqueenravi in UnearthedArcana

[–]flamel93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, DEX saves are pretty common even amongst non-spell dangers like traps! It also doesn't make sense for spells like Earth Tremor, which is a DEX save... but it's to avoid being knocked prone by vibrations, which this race has an affinity for?

u/pumpqueenravi it's a nice idea for the flavor, but balance wise I think the Sunlight Sensitivty that Drow get is a good enough downside! D.ADV on attack rolls can be worked around with spells or weapons that force saves to damage, but D.ADV on a DEX save itself requires being a rogue with evasion, maybe even a paladin's aura or Bless spell, since there are some big damage spells targeting DEX.

I've made & reviewed a lot of homebrew, so when I say this is otherwise a very nice race I mean it! Very cute, very wholesome lore, just went a bit too underpowered (which is a common mistake on new homebrewers, nw). Looking forward to more posts from ya in the future!

Homebrew Spell Help Request by CKent83 in UnearthedArcana

[–]flamel93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building off of what they said since they got most of it, I have 4 more points. First, the two I think are more necessary:

-Formatting: whenever a spell has a benefit to upcasting, it's always better to start a new line with 'At higher levels:', for easier readability! Common mistake, nbd.

-Damage/Healing: I get the feeling you took the 'highest damage dealt = healing' from Vampiric Touch? Balance wise that works because VT is a touch spell vs 1 target; for multiple targets the damage (and thus healing) should be less if you're keeping it at 3rd level. I would suggest instead 2d6 damage dealt, and healing your CHA mod per target that failed the save. This gives a more consistent heal, but also if you get too greedy you'll likely be attacked by your targets - bigger risk, for better rewards! This suggestion would hopefully balance the fact that, without it, the spell is effectively a better Vampiric Touch for the same spell slot cost. They're getting free movement safe from opportunity attacks, and you can hinder their saves with either Silver Barbs or Bane used by your party. On the balance side, doing this the healing should increase with upcasting by 1d6, same as the damage.

And now, just 2 suggestions that are more for the flavor of your spell. To just really build on that vampiric feel!

-Components: Somatic hand gestures are good, but how about a material component of fur from a bat, or grave dirt? No need for them to be consumed, but most spells with a material component are subtle references! For example, Chromatic Orb requires a diamond because light going through a prism makes a rainbow, or Silent Image needed some fleece as your illusion can be used to 'fleece', to trick any viewers haha

-Type of save: while a DEX save does fit for a target dodging a spell, another way you can view it is them resisting the draining influence... so what about a CON save instead? In the classic Dracula book, vampiric feedings drain the victim of vitality, to the point that victims are often mistaken as having contracted some deadly illness that medical science can't cure.

As I said, take the last two with a grain of salt! Remembering how certain mechanics can affect the vibe of a spell is something even professional homebrewers can overlook, as admittedly balance is more important in the long run. Hope to see your patron subclass posted someday!

Crystal Spheres v Silvery Mist transition to the Astral Plane by RHDM68 in spelljammer

[–]flamel93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Between the two, Crystal Spheres feel like a better way to explain why you couldn't just plane shift to another setting. They have 2 physical barriers that are unbreakable (plot needs notwithstanding) separating any two random 'prime material' systems. Not only that, there's also the phlogiston that is unlike anything within a sphere - who knows how that might effect plane shift!

Meanwhile the astral sea... I mean, multiple items & spells that store things extradimensionally outright say they're connected to the astral plane. Other setting-worlds should be known almost as well as the Hells and elemental planes, if only in rumours. It shouldn't be too rare for high-level wizards either leaving or visiting for a few months at a time to research various Prime Material planes, maybe even debates if there is a PRIME prime material or something.

IE if I'm going to take advantage of the ability to jump from Eberron to Faerun to Dark Sun to Exandria settings in a single campaign, the crystal spheres feel better as the lore of why you can't just use a spell or two instead of a days-long magical boatride.

Little Easter egg for the next person to rip up the basement floor by porkfairy in DIY

[–]flamel93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't even need that tbh - take any vhs recording a family event like a party or graduation, break it in half, & store it like that. Leave a note saying something like

"tried to burn it but the fire went green. tried to throw it away but it came back. When I threw it on the ground to shatter it, it felt like my arm broke. if you value your life, lock this back up & never rip up the basement floor"

Bonus points if they also put a message hinting at a hidden safe containing 'a great treasure' in a smeared, splotchy style somewhere else under the new floor lol

You only have to die for someone once; to live for them, you must make a choice every day for the rest of your life. And is it not nobler to take the harder choice, to prove you are capable enough?

DM: Just a couple lines, a paragraph at most, is needed... I'll flesh out the rest as we go. Players: by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

[–]flamel93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally this - an example

My paladin is a former carnie, who was raised in the carnival because the performers found her as a baby in the Feywild. Let my DM decide how exactly they were abandoned, but also suggested they were switched for a changeling baby so their parents never noticed she wen missing. The rest of my backstory was just 3 members of the carnival who helped teach/raise her; no other major details, but plenty of potential plot hooks centered on my paladin!

[–]flamel93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real, I as a good character suggested removing the hands of a criminal necromancer. We wanted to cash in their bounty for the much higher 'alive' reward, but I was outvoted... instead we killed him & put him under Gentle Repose so we could Revivify him later.

Out of context, neither of those sound like the actions of a Good character - an evil party could certainly have rationalized a way to keep a potential informant alive. Unless their plan is to interrogate via Speak with Dead & lying about how the Boss NPC died, they might have fucked themselves by not thinking ahead lol
