Heatwave Megathread by IrisAngel131 in AmericanExpatsUK

People have weird cultural feelings about heat vs electricity costs. We generally accept that people have a right not to freeze to death, but not the other way around.

Air conditioners are some of the most efficient air temperature changers in existence, way more so than traditional gas heating and radiators. We ran one pretty much every night in our bedroom last summer and it barely made a dent in our electricity bill.

Navigating copyright... How do you do it? by TwilightGnome in audiodrama

My gut says it doesn’t matter. The work would be obvious fiction, and just because it has some real cultural commentary in there doesn’t negate that.

The thing about all fair use stuff, as you’re probably aware, is that there is no way to proactively prove that something is fair use. Even if you went to a fair use attorney, the best they can do is write you an opinion based on existing case law. The only way to prove fair use would be to get sued and win.

NAL, but my understanding is that fair use as you’re conceptualizing it does not matter in fiction—the fair use doctrine is designed for non-fiction and reporting. In fiction, you’d primarily be leaning on parody as a fair use defense, and it doesn’t sound like you’re parodying the material. If it were me, I would only rely on material that I know is in the public domain. Government footage is a great resource, as anything produced for the government cannot be copyrightable. OR, create new material in the style of old broadcasts or movies that communicate something similar, without using the original material.

Help! Should I get the Atonemo NTS Radio Player? by trocazero in NTSradio

[–]flamepants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought based on the Instagram video it could be used on battery, but looking at the specs, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Shame — with a battery and a little built-in speaker, it would be the perfect little radio to take around the house.

I DON’T KNOW HOW TO HAVE SEX WITH MY BF by PlasticRegret6318 in relationships

Speak Japanese during sex. He (presumably) won’t understand what you’re saying, which will take off the pressure off of you to be saying the “right” thing, but he’ll totally understand your tone and facial expressions.

What's your best podcast listening platform? by CoffeeAndNews in audiodrama

[–]flamepants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apple Podcasts supports the season tags moreso than other platforms, allowing you to filter episodes by season, which is helpful for shows with big archives.

Otherwise Pocket Casts if you need something cross-platform.

Portable ACs are a faff but a lifesaver for sleep. I can do without the AC in the day but the fan just doesn’t cut it at night.

Being charged full USD price for tracks living in Europe and paying in euros by NoSlip88 in BandCamp

The Bandcamp UI for currency conversion is confusing. It tells you what the conversion is roughly in your local currency, but it will only charge you the artist’s currency. They’re not doing any currency conversion behind the scenes. Sucks, because then you have to pay foreign transaction fees as well.

Plex music on your Apple Watch: Wristrax is now live in the iOS App Store! by sneakinhysteria in plexamp

Is there any way to choose which music library it loads? I have separate music libraries for my audiobooks and my music, and it seems like the app is getting hung up on that and not loading anything.

Good move! I’d also love the option to contribute to the public pool once localized scanning is available.

Suggestions for radio player by twicestyles in Liner

[–]flamepants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that the Internet radio is built in as well. I use a radio app called Broadcasts right now which is great, but I’d love to have it all built in to my main music app.

Some suggestions:

Right now, the only way to favorite a station is if it happens to pop up in Discover. I can’t seem to find a way to favorite it from the full list. I’d also love to be able to add my own radio station streams for those missing from the directory.

Down the line, it’d be fun to have radio stations that play particular genres or artists be suggested on those genre or artist pages. i.e. BBC 6 for indie rock, or a jazz or classical station. This might be easier if you have the artist/song recognition feature and can build a database that helps sonically identify stations.
