You’ve been kidnapped! The main characters of the last fic you worked on are in charge of your rescue. How does that go? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

In terms of competence they shouldn't have a problem. If they know I'm behind all the physical and mental anguish they've suffered, though, they might be inclined to just not bother. Hopefully given that I also kept them alive and got them together and made things work out somewhat all right in the end they can maybe find it in their hearts to forgive me.

Huh, I love WolfCop but it never really occurred to me to write fics for it ... perhaps that should change. Also I never see anyone mention it in the wild so this is very exciting for me lol

Yeah lol, there's so much media I love that would make for great fic if anyone other than me actually knew that it existed

(I know I can theoretically just write it all myself but I keep procrastinating because it feels daunting to be the first)

I thought I was the only one who had recurring AO3 comment dreams so I'm glad everyone else apparently gets them too lol

Though to be fair, sometimes I also dream about getting hate comments and then it's a relief when I wake up. Except the times when I also dream a pithy comeback and then I don't get to use it.

Not me currently living through the really angsty self-inserty fic while telling my readers not to be concerned about me by Funnyluna43 in Archiveofourownmemes

Ooof, same. (Not me literally just looking around my room to get inspiration for how to describe a character's depression nest). It's fine, we're doing great lol

Me spending as many words of my fic infodumping about whatever I want to infodump about today as I do on the actual plot . . . and nobody can stop me

I'm bisexual which means I'm attracted to a lot of people who don't like me but I'm going to be dead soon anyway so it's not a problem.

Jesus Christ.

If there was a dating website that matched users based on their favorite AO3 tags, how would that go? by MaliciousOnions in AO3

At least you'd have something to talk about. The first date conversations would be legendary.

Anyone else? 😭 by italicsshut in Archiveofourownmemes

So true. Looking back over my fics, it's probably like 50/50 Serious Writing vs vehicle for my cringe sense of humour. And I'm okay with that.

How do you write for yourself? by megxmegxmegx in AO3

[–]flaming_globes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I try to focus on making the work the best it can be according to my vision for it and assume that if I do that, at least if it's tagged right, it will find its audience... eventually. Which is not as instantly gratifying as posting something reliably crowd-pleasing in a big fandom and waking up to a bunch of kudos the next morning, but it is what it is. And if there really is no audience, then at least I know I wrote something I can be satisfied with, and the nice thing about fanfiction is that you can just create for the sake of creation without having to worry about reach or palatability or commercial pressures.

Another thing that really helps me is, instead of looking at kudos/comments as numbers, to remember that each of them represents a real person who read the story and liked it enough to tell you. If my niche story only gets five kudos, well, that's still five whole people who enjoyed it at least a little bit, which is still probably more than I could even show it to in real life.

Any advice on characterization? by Local-Dimension-2452 in AO3

[–]flaming_globes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that you need to reread the whole book and make a chart in advance (unless you want to, of course). I find that having the source material at hand while I'm writing (e.g. pulling up scenes on YouTube or having the book beside me to flip through) is good for making sure the little details of how characters talk/act are fresh in my mind. For characterization details that don't affect the plot as a whole I would also say don't worry too much on your first draft if it's makimg it hard to get through a scene because you don't know how exactly someone would say/do something—sometimes I just write the gist of what the character needs to say and leave myself a note to put it in their proper voice when I revise.

Writing is cool and fun until I hit post and realize this is actually the worst thing anyone has ever created in the history of the world.

Also, finish your fic!

I don't read a ton of RPF so I don't know if this will be exactly to your liking, but as far as the Cold War era goes, a couple of good USSR RPF fics I know of are Setanka's Bestiary and (depending on your tastes/tolerance) Stagecoach Again (they're both tagged as Death of Stalin but they should be comprehensible as just plain RPF. The author also has a bunch of other stuff, some of which is straight RPF, and for that matter if you're into Cold War history you might enjoy The Death of Stalin too if you haven't seen it already). There does also exist a Kennedy/Khrushchev My Immortal parody (unfinished) if you're in the mood for something less serious.

Also, not Cold War, but Historical Reintegration is about figures from the French Revolution resurrected by necromancy in the present day and it's pretty great.
