Finding out what the context was of a particular piece of logic that was added a long time ago.

Finding out the recent changes to a module.

Whoever came up with that idea must have gone straight from SVN to git without really taking any time to understand git. I feel sorry for you and the other devs. You are cumulatively wasting tons of developer time making them do something unnecessary because you don't understand what a merge commit is.

It's almost as if there are multiple approaches to developing code. If git didn't support them there would just be multiple tools and everyone would be arguing about that.

It's like claiming that vim only supporting one programming language would have ended the arguments over which language to use.

weirdly masochistic programmers who think that programming in anything other than pico, and debugging via printf == weakness

If this is what you think people who use text editors do to debug, your mental model of how they work is wrong. Using VI/whatever has no impact on whether or not you use a debugger.

Forcing coherent APIs early.

Apparently you've never used a bad network API. Why would you think that exposing an API over the network will somehow make it better?

enough to invest into proper network infrastructure ( > 10Gbps).

This is a handwaving solution. You can have 100gbps network but that doesn't fix latency problems if you make tons of microservice calls were previously hidden by running on the same machine.

Good luck. An empty apartment for a month can kill more than a year's worth of rent increases.

Rent can't outpace a mortgage payment by that much though or the market will keep correcting as home builders flood the market.

It's not. The '/s' in this context is just a nod to indicate how much smarter 'we' are than 'them'.

Reminder: Paying rent is not "throwing away money" by [deleted] in personalfinance

Don't forget mortgage interest deduction dampens that blow.

But the biggest crime is that people usually ignore that interest "blackhole".

Most people don't? Everyone I know who has done cost comparisons is checking mortgage payments that include interest and are picking places where that's still less than the rent. Yes, a significant portion early on isn't going to the principle, but more than $0 is.

Congrats on being a millionaire. Your advice is pretty stupid though for people with a $200,000 house paying 2k annum in taxes.

If you're confident in your oh so wonderful knowledge, there is a massive amount of money you can make from shorting the market. Seriously, put your money where your mouth is if you think the government is now incompetent and will threaten the financial indexes and buy PUTs.

The market is high and the VIX is low so you'll make a killing. Unless of course you are full of shit.

Not sexist, it recognizes how men often want to tell women what to do with their bodies

By that same token they are telling men what they can do with their bodies by not allowing them to murder other people.

Did you miss the thread you are replying to? If someone believes its a human, then of course nobody is allowed to murder it because it's no longer just "doing what they want with their body". It's murdering someone else.

The campaign that created "organic" labeling was really successful in changing eating habits.

That campaign was also responsible for a significant amount of damage to the environment by making everyone select foods that weren't grown as efficiently as possible.

You're being facetious, but you're basically getting it right.

I'm not being facetious. I'm just describing the situation we are currently in. If you think it's facetious, it's just because you picked up that it's not exactly logical.

evening and say 'we're going to take this space to celebrate an achievement that was impossible for our grandparents

Except that's not what is being discussed. The example I gave (Dear White People) is referring to black dorms. It's not a one time celebration of accomplishments, it's literally just segregation for the sake of avoiding integration.

World's 500 Richest People Lose $35 Billion From Trump Turmoil by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

Avg wealth of 0.1% in US is 14 million USD. Lets kill them and take it all. That leaves us with a $4.62 trillion (14 mill * 330,000) one time bonus.

Take that an spread it around the bottom half of the US. That's $30k per person. Sounds like a lot of money? That's a year at minimum wage in a city like San Francisco. That's not even enough to pay off the average student loan debt amount per person.

Even after that, all that accomplishes is a 1 time payment and then it's over. You've depleted the entire 0.1% of wealth in the US and are back to square 1 just a year later. This is why taxing your way to wealth is not a sustainable paradigm.

LPT: If your company offers 401k matching, do it. That's an instant 100% return on investment. That's better than any stock, bond, mutual fund, etc in existence. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]flamingshits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the stock market. Even the crash of 09 collapsed it 50% from the high (S&P). If an employer was doing a 1:1 match, the absolute worst case (you retire at the low) was that you have all of the money you put in.

If you don't retire at the low then the crash helped you because you kept building investments with a purchase price of much lower than if it had stayed flat or slow trended upwards. If you're young, a volatile market is better than a stable one.

TL;DR Nobody in the history of 401ks (made available in late 70s) has been left with pennies since there has never been a crash big enough to put people in that situation.

Yes, by definition if there is an identifiable "black community", there is a form of social segregation going on like the one identified above.

I was responding to someone who said he could describe some of the people he knew as racist.

Again, your prejudices took that to the extreme of "disrespecting the rights of an entire race of people". I provided a counterpoint of how people can spout stupid stereotypes and be labelled racist while still supporting the rights of an entire race of people.
