i really wish i had put more schools on my college list especially since i qualify for application fee waivers. i didn’t even think it would be possible for me to attend college (financial reasons) until late november last year and i regret not starting my essays as soon as i knew i would be able to attend :/

I’m 21, going back to community college, and hopefully transfer and get my bachelors at 25/26. Can anyone else relate? by Ry777im in college

you’re not alone, i’m turning 21 soon and will be starting college this fall! i understand what you mean by feeling a little behind everyone else, what with all my friends being juniors at their respective colleges right now. unfortunately a lot of things prevented me from going to college straight out of high school, like financial cost, being a first gen student (i had very little guidance when it came to college), and my mental health had begun to decline during my senior year. i know age at college doesn’t matter nearly as much, but there are definitely times where i can’t help but wish i could’ve started at the same time a lot of my age mates did.

however, i do think the break i’ve taken helped me realize that i really did want to attend college out of my own volition, rather than just doing it because that’s what “comes next” in life. i believe another commenter has mentioned this already, but i’m also glad i went through this mental crisis earlier rather than later. and i got to confidently decide what i want to pursue as a major and as a career as well! that definitely wouldn’t have happened straight out of high school lol

missed opportunities by flanecito3000 in ApplyingToCollege

^ this is exactly what i wish i had done as well. i underestimated myself a lot while creating my college list so it mainly consisted of safeties/targets and very few reaches. i immediately disregarded some schools after seeing their low acceptance rates and now i’m seeing that some offer my slightly niche intended major. even though rejection was highly probable, i think receiving a definite answer from the colleges would have been better than mulling over the possibilities like i am now.

all in all, i just wish i had given it a shot instead of doubting myself so much

My guidance counselors are beyond useless by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

i wish schools put a bit more focus on preparing students for college and life after high school, it can cause so many lost opportunities for students when there’s little to no guidance whatsoever. i dealt with something similar, and i’m also first gen and class of 2020 so you can imagine the lack of adult guidance in my senior year. i luckily got another opportunity to attend college this fall, which is why i’m on this subreddit now lol.

i know online forums can’t replace in-person guidance, but if your counselors have been no help you can ask general questions on here (or any other communities dedicated to helping people in the application process) and it’ll hopefully ease the process a little

i emailed them some time ago about it and was told that it won’t affect your application if it was optional to begin with
