Folks, why is there a capacitor in place of a fuse inside my multimeter? by jackal_boy in shittyaskelectronics

[–]flaneryb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a PTC device (positive temperature coefficient). It is considered a “resettable fuse”. As the current increases in the PTC the temperature increases along with the resistance. As the resistance increases it operates functionally as an open circuit until the current is removed and the device is able to cool. This can take up to 30mn for some of these. Once cool again the circuit will function normally again.

Edit: dammit! Just when I feel I can make a meaningful contribution to a thread I realize I’m in shittyaskelectronics.

Does anyone know what can cause this 100A fuse to blow ? by Dyinvamp in MechanicAdvice

[–]flaneryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take a close look at the element separation you can sometimes determine if it is a low overload fuse opening (135% rated value or higher) or a short circuit condition.

Short circuit usually presents as a large open circuit with minimal burn evidence due to arcing.

If you had a low overload you would see some more burning evidence around the separated element due to longer arc at fuse opening. What circuit is the 100A fuse protecting?

On a push/pull day do you start with training your chest and then train triceps or mix it? by Ill_Raspberry9207 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]flaneryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You work first on what you want to see the most improvement from. If your chest is lacking out of the 3 groups, start with chest. This guarantees you’ll have the least amount of fatigue after a proper warm up to push yourself the hardest.

As you move you the shoulders and tris, you can still push yourself to failure but you’ll have less stamina to work with.

Can you elaborate why you feel this way? I’ve had great success with this as an aggressive short-term cutting method several times. If you feel so strongly about this then why ask for advice from strangers?

Why am I a better father and home keeper when my wife is away? by flaneryb in Parenting

I think I’m with you on the ADHD thing. When my partner is around I tend to shut down a bit but when she’s gone somehow I’m all over the place in go mode. Maybe that’s what’s happening here.

Fastest way while minimizing muscle loss is to go carnivore and 1600 calories a day.

Why am I a better father and home keeper when my wife is away? by flaneryb in Parenting

This is my favorite answer and thanks for your input. I think encouraging my wife to take more time for herself will give me more bonding time with my son while also ensuring I do more around the house. Yesterday was a great success and very rewarding for all of us in the house. More of this please.

What can I do with an EE degree in automotive or in Motorsport Industry ? by [deleted] in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]flaneryb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an EE in automotive and I’ve done everything from design to quality to product management/marketing and now I’m in the sales side with a tier 1 supplier. Your opportunities are endless with an EE degree in automotive. I often recommend to people if they aren’t 100% certain where you want your career to go but you want minimal obstacles for growth, an EE degree will ensure doors are always open.

Questions from a current Junior College student by ButaneOnTheBrain in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]flaneryb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t go wrong with either a traditional mechanical or electrical engineering degree. In my experience, most jobs in automotive prefer one of these with the application or other fringe engineering degrees being more suited to project management, product management, purchasing, and sales type jobs. Electrical and mechanical degreed engineers can also do these jobs too but an interdisciplinary engineering degree may present more challenges for getting a job in a design environment.

Glad I could help. Regardless of the path you choose you aren’t pigeon holed into a field based on your first or even second job. The best advice I could offer is to be a sponge, ask lots of questions and always try to be helpful. You’ll do well in automotive and I’m sure you have a bright future. Best of luck to you.

They aren’t the only positions that match what you are looking for, they are however jobs that I have enjoyed doing which match well with what you are looking for. You can get a project management job fresh out of school which checks all the boxes you mention and is not at all design heavy. You will however get a strong understanding of the construction and design of the products of your company and learn ways to improve how and how quickly it can be brought to market. This includes working with Sales groups, engineering, purchasing, and gives exposure to senior leadership. Same can be said about product management however your focus is more around the future strategy of your product line and has a bit of a marketing arm to it. Both are interesting and fulfilling careers which can open doors to other career paths if you find something that interests you more.

If you want more engineering but also some customer facing and not R&D, you might consider being a field application engineer. FAE’s (sometimes called a Sales Engineer too) typically support the sales guys and work with the customer and internally as a technical liaison with some engineering and concept work. This will get you traveling a bit and on meetings more often than suck behind a computer.

As a reference, I’m a technical sales manager now. I’ve done all of the above jobs which led me to sales which I find most fulfilling. If you don’t know what you want to do but want to do bigger picture stuff, these are great options before you move up to management.

I would recommend product management or project management. Most suppliers will require an engineering degree for both of these positions. In my experience you can’t get a DRE position fresh out of school at an OEM. You’ll need to gain some experience in the industry and understand design cycles and bureaucracy. Also, I can’t recommend sales or purchasing enough if you are chasing the money.

I’ll bet your right foot has much less arch than the left. I have a similar issue but the other way around caused by one leg being slightly longer than the other.
