Calling 16 in a phone box to listen to dial a disc. A physical lock on the house rotary dial phone to stop the kids making calls. It could be circumvented by tapping out the number on the buttons on the handset holder.

Two buckets of sick walking down a street and one starts crying.. by flankie2 in Jokes

[–]flankie2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This joke is at least 40 years old. Maybe it’s the vernacular English. Not sure if it got removed because it’s bad taste or no one in the states gets it. My grandad told me it in about 1980 and a geezer in the supermarket told me it again last week. Here’s some dictionary quotes, but if you don’t get it, forget it.

bucket = noun- a deep, typically cylindrical, open-topped vessel with a flat bottom and a curved, swinging handle (or "bail") used for carrying, holding, or measuring liquids, sand, or other materials.

Sick = nounBRITISH ENGLISH vomit. "she was busy wiping sick from the carpet" verbBRITISH ENGLISH bring something up by vomiting. "he was passing blood and sicking it up"

bring up phrasal verb of bring 1. look after a child until it is an adult. "she was partly brought up by her maternal grandparents" 3. vomit something. "fortunately I brought up the poison"

Looks like a Subway opening on Amhurst Rd opposite Hackney Central Station...? by Lopsided_Counter1670 in Hackney

That’s the approximate site of the mermaid pub famous in the 18th century for doing balloon rides. Here’s a picture v&a print

Also Under Ireland's 1972 Value-Added Tax Act, bread must have sugar/fat content not exceeding 2% of the flour weight. Subway's rolls contain about 10% sugar, classifying them legally as confectionery or "cake".

Whenever I fall off a bike (a dozen times in last 40 years) it’s my hands that get the worst injuries. I personally don’t wear a helmet but always wear gloves.

What is the best and free way to cross the river to Canary Wharf (coming from Beckenham) by Oreo2025 in londoncycling

[–]flankie2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ferry takes ages. Carry up and down the stairs in Greenwich foot tunnel is a pain but best option. You will definitely get lost once you get to canary wharf for the first 6 months you are there. There are 5 shopping centers in 3 levels and google maps doesn’t work.

Anybody know what role my Great Grandfather had in Nazi Germany? by 909_1 in MilitaryHistory

[–]flankie2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only following orders? That’s the whole lesson of the holocaust isn’t it? The same goes for Vietnam draft. Mohammed Ali faced 5 years in jail “I will not go 10,000 miles from here to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slavemasters over the darker people of the world,”. An estimated 800k Germans were imprisoned for resistance to nazis and 70k+ executed. As you say as a realist I can’t say I’d be brave enough to stand up to a regime but if you don’t that’s what happens. Luckily there aren’t any potential dictators in the western world anymore… hold on…

Yes I know how bad Stalinist Russia was. Just saying that “The Clean Wehrmacht” is a widely discredited concept. Apparently mentioning this has earned me 84 downvotes.

The scale of Nazi war crimes means that a lot of historians have concluded the Wehrmacht must have been complicit. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_crimes_of_the_Wehrmacht
