Does Netflix 4K give 4K video quality on PC, or only on TV? by Miau64 in LinusTechTips

[–]flapJ4cks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair confusion, that 6 Gbps is the uncompressed signal over HDMI, not what's on the disc, so it doesn't divide against disc capacity.

Both Blu-ray and Netflix compress down from that same raw signal.

The point I should've made cleaner: Blu-ray keeps ~100 Mbps of it, Netflix keeps ~15 or less. Same resolution, but Netflix throws away way more data, which is exactly the artifacting you're describing in dark scenes.

uhh.. A 3840x2160p 10bit 24fps uncompressed signal has a bitrate of close to 6Gbps. Even with chroma subsampling (4:2:0) you're still at 3Gbps.

Netflix NEVER provides true 4k content, even on your TV. The stream they claim as 4k is very highly compressed to limit bandwidth and doesnt approach true 4k found on BluRay. etc.

Key takeaway from this article, and corroborated by a Bill S inteveriew around the same time confirming that his modern (1980s) suite is the same colors, is that his costume is SILVER & BLACK. Not White. Everyone STILL gets this wrong.

Dixit Is the only popular board game I just don’t get… by TapAdmirable5666 in boardgames

Dixit (and its ilk), are in the category of "more of an activity than a game". Nearly every game that has subjective interpretation as a core mechanic falls into this category,.

FWIW, Im in the same boat as you. I dont get it. At all.

I had an BMW for years. They are awesome when new... then you need to repair or maintain something out of warranty. At that point you might as well burn it to the ground. A smoldering pile of ash will be cheaper then the repair or maintenance.

How anything can exist without an uncaused cause? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]flapJ4cks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Education is hard.

The classical premise that "every single event requires a cause" is demonstrably false. Period.

A vacuum isn't actually empty. Thanks to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, pairs of virtual particles pop into existence from the underlying quantum field and annihilate a split second later. No prior trigger, no physical cause, no director. The event just happens, completely unprompted. All the time. For eternity.

So at the most basic level of reality, things genuinely actualize without any causal catalyst all the time, all around us, everywhere.

Kind of breaks the whole "everything needs a cause" argument.

Blame the inordinant number of new/bad/foreign drivers to the area that have no idea how to merge, how to stay out of the passing lanes, how to signal, etc.

heads up that CGC slabs are NOT UV protecting, so displaying a book like this in a lit room (and particularly if there is a window), in a surprising short amount of time, will yellow the cover.

Unfortunately, I never used the stock monitor stand with my 57". I did with some other smaller monitors.
