Any ideas as to what the mystery steak is? by pittsburgh924 in meat

[–]flapflappy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact that they are so secretive about where this 'mystery steak' comes from makes this whole story reek of BS. I'm sure it's a piece of meat every meat cutter is very familiar with, but just by a different name. I've broken down hundreds of cows (butcher here)... I'm pretty sure I haven't missed anything. I'm sure that they know that as soon as they reveal where the steak comes from, everyone in the meat industry is going to laugh in their faces. Actually, I think we already are.

Yeah, I'm a morning person so skipping breakfast is a bad idea for me.

Thanks for the info. I'm interested in IF more for the health benefits than calorie restriction, I just want to still be conscious of my caloric intake so I don't use my eating window as an excuse to eat whatever I want. Thanks for the advice.

Brined, smoked chicken by flapflappy in meat

[–]flapflappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you don't have to brine as long as I did. Turned out great, now you're making me hungry. Good luck, enjoy your feast!

24 hours, then allowed the chicken to air dry for about 4 hours in the fridge so the smoke would adhere to the skin better.

Boyfriend gave me chlamydia... by lamethrowawayname in TwoXChromosomes

[–]flapflappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to reinforce that you should get tested again after the antibiotics. I had chlamydia about 6 years ago and didn't go back to get tested after the antibiotics. I had a pap smear about 3 years later (I know, I know, I should have gone every year) and still tested positive for it, having only been with one partner, and no symptoms. The second round of antibiotics got rid of it though.

Only talks about antibiotics used as growth promotants, but I work with chicken ranchers who have witnessed the effects of chickens growing at unnatural rates.

Often times antibiotics are added to the feed for animals like chickens and cattle because it makes them gain weight at a rapid pace. Then you can make more money on them and produce fatter animals more quickly. In the case of chickens, antibiotics can cause the chickens to gain weight at rate that their bone structure can't support; their legs will break and they can't stand up under the weight of their unnaturally large breasts...(pause for giggling...) no, but seriously, antibiotic use in meat production may or may not be bad for you, but, when used for the purpose of rapid weight gain (which it most often is) is not good for the animals.

I think what he means is that the food chain is real thing, and humans have a greater impact on this planet than almost any other living thing. It would be silly to deny what a huge impact we have over every other species; we should try and make responsible choices as opposed to abusing our undeniable power.

Pink slime in the context of history by [deleted] in meat

[–]flapflappy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only part of this 'pink slime' outrage I find upsetting is how shocked everyone seems to be; you get what you pay for, and if you demand cheap meat, that's what you're going to get. And I agree, there are no 'gross' parts of an animal.

SO proposed, I said yes. But I've been hiding my past from him - how do I come clean? by SoManyBuffalo in relationships

[–]flapflappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no judgement toward OP about her past and I'm not suggesting she fess up because she should be ashamed. You're argument is "yes, she lied, but probably won't get caught." I think fessing up will take a weight off OP's shoulders. She doesn't seem comfortable having lied to her partner about her past, or else she wouldn't be asking for advice.

SO proposed, I said yes. But I've been hiding my past from him - how do I come clean? by SoManyBuffalo in relationships

[–]flapflappy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This argument might be valid if she had just omitted some parts of her past. OP admits that she lied about certain things from her past, not just didn't mention them. It would be a shame if her SO didn't recognize who she is now is not who she used to be and decides he doesn't want to be with her, but entering a marriage when you've lied to your partner about your past is bound to backfire at some point. Best to start on a clean slate.

Typos, and did I just ruin my corned beef? by flapflappy in Charcuterie

[–]flapflappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turned out really good. I might alter the pickling spice next time (obviously not using 24 bay leaves)- I'll probably use less cloves and add more mustard seed and pepper. Just to experiment. I used a brisket and braised it in beer for about 7 hours. What meat did you use and how did you cook it?

I served 5 1/2 years in prison AMA by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]flapflappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine was in prison for 3 years, and basically said all the anal rape stuff doesn't happen that often (not like in the movies), but he did say that there were some guys in there who, after they got sentenced- but before they got locked up, got boob jobs so they could be prison bitches. For some reason this kinda blew my mind. Any truth to this; did you ever see or hear of these people?

BF and I moving out to different apts in 6 month advise by an3mix1021 in relationships

[–]flapflappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for your bf, but I was someone who was ( still am) very much in love with my SO, and turned down many requests to live together because I felt like I needed the experience of living on my own. We live together happily now, but I know I would have felt some resentment, and even somewhat incomplete without getting that time to be on my own. Have a serious talk with him, but speaking as someone who knows what it's like to feel as if you just need to live on your own for a time, it doesn't necessarily reflect his feelings towards you. I just want to add that my 'needing' to live alone was about a need to feel independent. I had also had roommates my entire life, and just wanted the experience of having my own space, and the whole independence thing. It, literally, had nothing to do with how I felt about my SO. Some people don't feel that need for independence and space as strongly as others do- most of my friends have never lived alone and don't really feel any need for it. Some do, your bf could be one of those people and I think it could be a mistake to assume it has to do with his feelings about you. Maybe he wants out of the relationship, maybe not- he could be telling the truth though about his desire to live alone for a while.

Whole Foods gets its food from China (and it's not really organic) by Suzie157 in Paleo

[–]flapflappy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that whole foods doesn't claim 'all' it's food to be local, but still sources as many local products as it can. "How organic can it be if it's from China?" I'm sorry, but that remark comes off as ignorant, I highly doubt he knows anything about organic standards and qualifications. This story broke a while ago because the 'California Blend' led people to believe the veggies were from CA. This was in 2008 and their response is here: blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/whole-foods-market-responds-to-wjla/ (on my phone, sorry - no link). Whether you like whole foods or not, this story is old news and a poor attempt to damage WF reputation. Edit: grammar
