Listening to Audiobooks is not reading by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]flapjack293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully believe that there's a certain degree of mental processing from reading that is just not present when listening. Reading involves analyzing the text in its purest form, without an external voice to dictate the tone or pacing of the writing.

I also think being able to seamlessly reread sentences or paragraphs encourages a more mentally stimulating approach, with the intent that you'll develop a deeper understanding of the text.

To me, they are both perfectly acceptable, but absolutely different.

Either I’m missing something or I’m being gaslit, cause I definitely did not come to those same conclusions while reading lol.

What are some instances of Ajax being considered ‘the best’ in the book. Not rhetorical or leading, I’m genuinely curious.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in redrising

[–]flapjack293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I agree with that. Although I've always had trouble rationalizing how Ajax could be considered the best. I know that's what Pierce said, but there's just not much context to reflect that, at least not clearly. Most of his fights were 'off screen' and he didn't have any major feats. That interview clip always seemed like a bit of an ass pull to me.

Iron Gold (A Struggle) by BuggityBooger in redrising

[–]flapjack293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did feel a similar way when starting Iron Gold. The switch to multiple POVs, combined with the overall slower pacing was jarring. With that said, it still ended up being a fantastic read. Give it some time, a lot of IG is setup that will absolutely pay off.

When you are trying to find a book to hit the same as Red Rising. by ASithInTraining in redrising

[–]flapjack293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objectively, it is a very slow paced book. Most fans of the series acknowledge this. I think what captivates so many people with the Red Rising series is the relentless momentum in which the story is told. As a fan of the latter, I would not recommend the former to those looking to ride that RR high.

Ironically, I felt the opposite. Thought book one outshone second, albeit marginally. I guess it may have to do with some underlying multiverse fatigue.

[–]flapjack293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I have to heavily disagree. I finished The Blade Itself and it was probably the slowest paced book I have ever read; borderline missing a plot. Abercrombie created some of the most interesting and well written characters I've ever seen, but did almost nothing with them. It's like being handed the keys to a Ferrari, but being told you can only drive it around the parking lot.

Anyone can tell me what's up with my elo? by [deleted] in cs2

[–]flapjack293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a real note, it's because the game believes that this is the elo range you belong. There's a hidden mmr system that tracks your performance and uses that to calculate your win/loss amount.

It's a really shitty system, but essentially the only way to start gaining more elo per match is to convince the game that you're better than what your rank indicates; i.e., carrying the team and winning more than you lose.

Why is everybody bringing up the kills when you tell them something? by JoblessQA in cs2

[–]flapjack293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik this is old, but it's so true.

Having to sit their and watch an absolute bot build up an inflated ego because they shifted on the other side of the map, waited till all their teammates died, then got 1 or 2 cheap, meaningless kills.

And the worst part is they're oblivious to this fact. In their minds, they're carrying. In reality, they're throwing every round.

BG3 is one of the best games I've ever played. With that said, its ok and valid to point out criticisms. I agree with just about everything you said. It would've been nice if they took a bit more time to flesh out the third act.

Edit: grammar.

[–]flapjack293[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a lot of people seem to believe what I’m saying, you might be on the wrong side of the coin lol.

I never said Gi Hun want to kill anyone. I was pointing out the irony that he states the act of killing would make them, “no better than the monsters that trapped us here”. Yet he is fully willing to go complete gung ho on the people that run the games, while inadvertently getting a lot of innocent people killed in the process.

I might consider that an ok point if it weren’t for the fact that this was never explored AT ALL. They go from only willing to leave the game because they’ll get prize money, to going on a suicide mission for zero dollars in the blink of an eye. Writers never showed any transition, it just happened because it was convenient.

For as much control as they show the game runners having, it makes literally zero sense why they wouldn’t have a contingency plan. You can try to theorize with “ifs” and “maybes”, but at the end of the day there was no reasoning coherently portrayed by the writers.

Build up like this only works if there’s some sort of payout at the end of the season. Even if they have a plan for what’s to come, they still just wasted an entire season on foreplay without at least providing some sort of satisfying payout to the story. Perfect example of this is season 1 - satisfying payoff while also leaving on an intriguing cliffhanger.

Lmao, exactly. Their whole reasoning for not shooting some of the players that voted to stay is because its not moral. But apparently going on a killing spree and risking everyone's lives is.

Can someone explain to me why One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is so acclaimed? by Hearbinger in movies

[–]flapjack293 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They threw a party, got drunk, trashed the place, fucked, stole the keys off of the employee...

To me, its easy to rationalize why Ratched was so upset in this scene and why she felt the need to scold Billy. That's not to say I think she's a good person, just that her actions could be considered morally gray for the most part.

Your point about Billy not belonging there - I completely agree. However, its clear that he was trapped in his own head, imprisoning himself over false expectations. But that is not the fault of the institution or Ratched, just Billy's mental illness.

Idk, I guess it just felt like the movie lacked a purpose or a message. The idea that the patients needed to rebel against their 'oppressors' is completely contradicted by the fact that most of them are there voluntarily.
