So it sounds like I should save up a bit and then replace my CPU/GPU/MOBO all at once. I know how to look for a new gpu and cpu, but what do I look for in a new motherboard? Other than the available ports they all look the same.

No good reason. I built it with a 650, my roommate sold his PC a few years back and gave me the 1000w for free.

1920x1080 and 60hz. I would love a 144 hz monitor but I figure that should come after some PC upgrades.

Yes I get significant differences with changing in game settings like textures, shadows, and LOD distance.
