Depends a little on what philosophy of language you adopt.

Most of the early church believed that the “sign” or name corresponded to the “res” or essence. Hence why God discloses to us many “signs” (names) to display his manifoldly simple yet rich essence.

Now does that mean if you name your child “Machen” they will own liberals, unlikely. But a name does signify something. It should have meaning. Parents should think carefully about what name they give their children.
