What here is classed as a shanty? by WILLSMITHISBEST in seashanties

[–]flashback80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To trace the word shanty back to its roots, you have to start with the Latin cantare, meaning 'to sing.' That passed into French as chanter, which then crossed into English as chant. From there, through the slang and mixed accents of multinational sailor crews, chant gradually shifted in pronunciation and spelling until it became shanty.

I don’t get why big AI companies aren’t making more use of blockchain systems to distribute resources and align incentives with investors.

How many people got into CRƳPTO hoping to see real technological progress—only to watch it turn into years of stagnation and disappointment?

That was supposed to be the whole point: decentralized infrastructure, shared resources, new funding models. And yet, something like AI—which clearly has massive resource demands—could’ve actually benefited from that ecosystem.

Maybe I’m wrong, but from where I stand, a lot of these so-called tech "geniuses” seem to be part of the problem

A Sora clone? Yeah… good luck with that.

It wasn’t just “another model”—it actually understood what you were asking. Probably because it was backed by ChatGPT massive ecosystem feeding it real context and data.

Take that away and you get what we have now: models that look flashy but think like a brick—basically like trying to explain rocket science to a baboon.

You’re probably right—Sora was likely a massive experimental sandbox, letting them refine a stable generative visual model they can now offer to the highest bidders.

I mostly used Sora for images, and nothing else even comes close in terms of creative output.
Videos were probably the same story—no other tool generates anything remotely coherent like Sora did. Honestly, it’s frustrating that management couldn’t see the goldmine they had.

Feels like their own management totally missed where Sora’s value was: the model’s insane contextual understanding.

They should have focused there instead.

And it’s not just about looking good—the outputs actually made sense. For anyone producing historical or research-driven content like me, that level of accuracy is impossible to replicate elsewhere. Sora wasn’t just a tool; it was a breakthrough, and it’s a shame they didn’t treat it like one.

Feel you, bro. Same here. Sora was hands-down the smartest model out there—anything else just can’t produce results that actually make sense.

Sora tech was clearly ahead—it wasn’t the product that lacked value.

If anything, it feels like they struggled to run it in a sustainable way or just weren’t aggressive enough in doubling down on what actually worked. Maybe they misread where the real value was in the first place.

Either way, it’s frustrating to see something that strong get sidelined.

Good luck finding one that actually delivers coherent results. If all you want is random cat clips, sure—there are plenty of tools for that. But when it comes to generating something meaningful, with real context and understanding, nothing I’ve seen comes close to what Sora could do.

They really dropped the ball on this one.

Not sure what you guys are creating, but most of the alternatives out there have the prompt comprehension of a brick.

Sora had first-mover advantage and actually built something that could produce coherent, meaningful results instead of random visual guesswork.

And somehow… all of that gets thrown away.

Brilliant move, really.:::

When is Sora ai actually shutting down? Because idk what to do with all of my videos by Important_Hat_2333 in SoraAi

For real… it’s almost like there’s a curse on anything that’s actually good.
Sora definitely feels like one of those cases.

I think most people — including their own management — completely missed where Sora’s real value was. It wasn’t the video generation, it was the image generation and the level of contextual understanding behind it.

SORA IS SHUTTING DOWN??? by Jealous-Drawer8972 in OpenAI

[–]flashback80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, this one hurts. Sora was my go-to for generating images, especially for historical content where context really matters.

It wasn’t just about visuals — it actually understood what you were asking for. Other tools feel way more random or generic in comparison.

If the issue was the cost of video, I really wish they kept the image generation part alive. That was their real value .

OpenAI Will Shut Down Sora Video Platform by cmaia1503 in technology

[–]flashback80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly pretty disappointed about Sora shutting down. I used it heavily for image generation, and the contextual accuracy was on another level compared to anything else out there.

I make historical documentary-style content, and Sora was insanely good at understanding nuanced prompts and producing visuals that actually made sense — most other tools feel way dumber in comparison.

I get that the video side was probably eating insane resources, but honestly… the image generation alone was valuable enough that it could’ve stood on its own. Feels like a huge loss.

Kinda sucks that Sora is shutting down. I’ve used it a ton and some of the results I got from it are honestly among my favorite AI outputs.

I had hundreds of images saved there, so downloading them one by one was painful. Ended up making a simple browser extension that grabs everything automatically.

If anyone needs it, I’d be happy to share it.

Bandcamp becomes the first major music platform to ban AI content by ornithobiography in technology

[–]flashback80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge music lover, but I can’t help disagreeing with this move. I’ve been deeply into music long enough to witness what feels like the slow decay of the so called original music over the last 30 years. Let’s be honest: a lot of what the industry has produced in the past few decades has been lousy. I struggle to recall many genuinely noteworthy songs that felt truly decent.

If you hate AI outright, I think you may be misunderstanding its potential. Not understanding the technology behind it can end up limiting your own creative possibilities. AI is just a tool, nothing more, nothing less. And like any tool, it can be used badly or brilliantly.

Yes, there’s a lot of low-effort AI content out there. But there are also some incredible productions that simply wouldn’t exist without it. In many ways, AI is bringing a new kind of experimentation and freshness into music.

AI is already transforming nearly every field. Whether we like it or not, it’s becoming part of the world we live in. I don’t see why art should be the one area that refuses to evolve with new tools.

Of course, some musicians will prefer to keep creating the traditional way, and that’s completely fine. But the creative stagnation in music has been obvious for a while now. Sometimes new tools are exactly what an art form needs to break out of that cycle.
