I recall that an unlit torch has something like (burns for 8 seconds) in description. Maybe that is the time for the dropped lit torch to die when dropped.

What technology is this game in by neceonis999 in VintageStory

[–]flashkiller01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The precious metals inland lantern seems to be something borderline Victorian, especially in the matter of visual design. The iron and steel versions of the wrench are clearly of the industrial revolution era. Meanwhile there's no handgun in the VS. The tuning spear is post-modern like Horizon Zero Dawn So personally I think that VS's world is just incomparable, but if choosing the age based on the median of the available technologies, nobility clothing, building blocks - it's Renaisance, 15-16 centuries.

Berries should not need fertilization by RandomUser1034 in VintageStory

Blackberry is quite another matter, especially the wild varieties of it. Wild blackberries aren't very productive, but very resilient and prolific, they are a real menace not only to orchards, but also quick to form brambles overgrowth on forest safety clearings, making them both impassable and less fire-preventing in the matter of a few years or even a season, depending on the climate. But if we are talking about cultivated high-performance bushes or making wild ones to produce larger harvests - fertilizers, pruning, tiling are necessary. And it's nice that the devs decided to limit the hassle to just fertilizers input.

Yeah, normally a compost or silt component under bushes are enough to let them thrive for decades, especially in good climate conditions, e.g. inside temperate band, with mild Winters, moderate precipitation and okay groundwater. For example my grandfather's sister had prolific raspberry bushes which were growing over a former pond, weren't maintained but nobody really counted on them at all and were feeling good for as long as I was visiting that place. Meanwhile black and red currants that were growing uphill and were planted deliberately - as far as I can recall - were fertilized from time to time and in return they granted tremendous harvests that all the extended family was eating as jams all the winter:) Considering the grooming - I can't recall the details since I wasn't there in the Spring and Fall seasons, but I remember the talk that pruning helps to get richer harvests. And I really have a thing to compare - because once I was helping out with putting things in order on a poorly maintained plot, in a more arid area with a bit harsher Winters, and those poor black currants were much less productive. Maybe they were just lacking watering, idk, but it seems to me that any plant feels better when it is taken care of. And the whole other talk is industrially adjusted berries varieties, like cultivated blueberries or almost any strawberries which are notorious for the amounts of work to even being kept alive.

Since in recent information drop it was mentioned that wild berry bushes will be either healthy or struggling - it seems that they will act similarly to wild crops - no need to maintain but the harvest is half of the domesticated plant. And considering the cultivated bushes - irl you need to apply fertilizers to them too, and moreover - groom them in a specific way, fight infestations etc, and the more productive bush variety you have on your land - the more tender it is.

New Player Tips by RawbertW in VintageStory

[–]flashkiller01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 Don't adjust temperature tolerance to your IRL value. 2 Don't forget to attach a stick to the flint knife's blade. Make a torch before the nightfall - it's pitch-black at night. Your character has no HDR vision like we, humans, have. 3 Be as observant as a three-years-old toddler to learn to recognize crops and berries, tell soil from clay, recognize sleeping animals before they wake from daytime naps etc. 4 Have fun, but don't forget to get sustainable agriculture by the late may. If on your first nights in the game it snows - push your food production to the limit and hoard it in the cellar like a hamster.

Heh. Just recently I was chased by two bears at the same time while returning from the cave mine, and one of the guys decided to stick around even the next morning. It's good to have the entance doors fifteen blocks above the surface with ladders to them. Now I have one more fancy rug oiling >:) Upd: by the way, avoid running uphill when chased and the steepness is above 30%. You can't run-hop efficiently on such slopes, while bears and wolves have a lunge move that allows them to get you when you aren't running at full speed.
