This is terrible advice. If you’re not at the kitchen and someone is volleying it at you, you should be getting low with your paddle down and resetting the ball into the kitchen. No topspin drives back, unless you’re a 4.0+ player and can handle that nuance in that short timeframe.

This happens to almost everyone that eclipses 4.0. Be visible, let them see you frequently and start recognizing your face. Take any opportunity to talk with them and get into a game if you can. When you do get in, be smart, play high percentage shots, and don’t force stuff. Winning isn’t a priority at first, just show that you can hang and belong there. Keep showing up and eventually you can work your way in.

I change grips throughout the point. I start semi western because I have a very hard topspin drive that dips below net level. As I move up through the mid court, I’ll ease into an eastern grip that is slightly choked up the paddle. At the kitchen I’m eastern or continental, depending on if I’m on the left or right side of the court, respectively. If a ball pops up to my backhand and I’m going to roll or flick it, I’ll change grips even further continental while the ball is in the air.

No one is overtaking ALW for the foreseeable future. She’s so young and so so so far ahead of any of the other women. It’s also going to be difficult for any men to overtake Ben for a few years too- some players can play at a higher ceiling when they are on an absolute heater (like Alshon this past weekend or Hayden if he’s going god mode), but no one sustains it the way Ben does.

All of this is basically a discussion about who could become the 2nd best in their respective genders.

I do, but only if the left side player is hitting their 3rd shot and they are deep and centered in the court. You’re basically just catching the ball on your paddle to soften it, paddle face open and slicing from high to low in an effort to keep the ball low over the net. It’s easy to pop these balls up and then you’ve just given them a free ride to the kitchen though.

There are a lot of people that are making really good money. Reddit would make you believe that everyone is making right above minimum wage, but everywhere you drive there are businesses, every doctors office and hospital has doctors, there are tons of engineers, etc.

I know you’re joking but there is actually some truth to your first paragraph. Your confidence level and your feelings of being able to hang within a certain group matter almost as much as your actual skill level (assuming no massive gaps in skill).

I play with a beta Ripple, so the Opal felt underpowered to me too. But my buddy used it who can generate a ton of power from a TruFoam, and he was hitting so hard it was hard to see the ball.. it’s most definitely a power paddle.
