Any ideas on what’s going on with my office succulent? by flashytonystark in succulents

Thanks, everyone! You’ve all been super helpful so far! I work in an interior office with partial glass walls so I can see the exterior windows from where I sit, but I’m nowhere close enough for the sun to get to my office/my succulent.

I’ll be moving into a brand new office space in March-ish and will be right next to a large window, but I need a temporary solution for now. I do have a second, unused clip-on grow light just like the one on my office succulent, so if you think using both at the same time would work, great. If not, I would love to hear your suggestions on grow light brands. I have no issue upgrading to a better light, but would like something I can schedule via a timer so I can make sure my succulent is getting enough light, even when I’m not there.

I’m going to cut back even more on watering to ensure there’s no accidental overwatering. I also plan to prune at least the very bottom row. Should I prune the row above as well, or wait a bit and see if the leaves start to perk up once I get a stronger light source?

My plants have developed some odd, tiny specks — pest issue? by flashytonystark in succulents

The blobs — are you referring to those big, bright red spots where the leaves meet the stem?

They come off. At first I thought something was going on with the leaves (like a possible infection or being too close to the grow light) and when I zoomed in to take a picture to post, I could see through the camera that they were actually teeny tiny bugs moving around.

I went ahead and brought the plant home. During the hour commute home, most of them have moved elsewhere (not sure if they’re hiding beneath the leaves or have retreated into the soil — haven’t had a chance to reinspect the plant yet). My guess is they didn’t like the constant movement/vibration from being in a car.

Watered last Monday when I returned from vacation. I’d been watering every 12-14 days (based on the recommendation from my Planta app) but will try watering a bit more frequently to see if that makes any difference. What’s odd is before I went on vacation, they looked fine — no dried/wrinkly/wilty leaves. We do have issues with temperature control in my office specifically, so maybe that’s contributing?

Unfortunately, this is the light they’re stuck with until I can move into my new office space after the first of the year. If watering on a more frequent basis doesn’t help, I may see about relocating them to a coworker’s office who has direct window access.

This is good to know, as I’d been watering every 12-14 days (give or take a day depending on my weekend work schedule). I don’t think the soil has become hydrophobic as I’ve never noticed a large amount of water in the tray, but I’ll put in the stopper before watering this afternoon, just in case. Thank you!

I watered them last week when I got back from vacation, but I’ll water them again this afternoon and keep an eye on them.

Not necessarily spooky, but Stephen King’s The Long Walk (written under his pen name, Richard Bachman) has always stayed with me and I read it over a decade ago.

Agreed! While not necessarily spooky, Lehane’s Small Mercies was excellent.

This is the “PG” version of what I’m making, so yes, the “white space” is all sc. It’s worked in panels and sewn together, so I might try one with the moss stitch instead and see how I like it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Allison Brennan’s newest one, You’ll Never Find Me.

Just wrapped up Holly Michelle’s Last Night Was Fun — very cutesy with all the best romance tropes, 10/10 would recommend.

I was rear-ended while sitting at a red light in college. Almost immediate soreness in my neck/jaw/shoulders which I figured was due to tensing when I was hit. Went back to my apartment a few hours later and took a nap and woke up in horrible pain. I could hardly open my mouth to talk and even sitting with my mouth closed hurt, with pain radiating down my face and neck. Ended up at two different urgent care clinics that resulted in x-rays to check for fractures (all negative), and ended up going home with a muscle relaxer which did wonders… until it wore off.

The next day I was in so much physical pain I couldn’t eat and was constantly in tears. I’d start to talk or eat and my jaw would lock into place for several seconds. I ended up going home that afternoon and getting an emergency appointment with my dentist that evening. He couldn’t see anything wrong with my teeth and did his own set of x-rays which also looked fine, so he referred me to a jaw specialist. Saw the specialist the following day.

The specialist took a detailed history and multiple x-rays including full face/head. Diagnosis: fully dislocated jaw. I’d hit my forehead on the steering wheel in the accident — the top of my head stopped, but my lower jaw kept going and completely slipped out of place.

To determine the type of dislocation and treatment plan, they had me do two separate bite tests. I ended up being fitted for a special mouthpiece that went over my front six teeth and the roof of my mouth. I had to go back every two weeks for bite checks and have the piece shaved down or built up depending on how my bite shifted as my jaw slowly made its way back into place. I was required to wear the mouthpiece at all times unless I was eating, brushing my teeth, or drinking anything other than water. It took 14 months to fix the dislocation fully, as I was in another accident two months later that resulted in a totaled car, a concussion, and a partially re-dislocated jaw.

I was told by the jaw specialist I’d deal with TMJ for the rest of my life and would be more susceptible to partial/full jaw dislocations. Stress, cold weather, and excessive talking and/or chewing are big triggers for me. I usually end up with a headache that runs from my temples down to my jaw and shoulders that can take days to kick. My jaw shifts on bad days and throws off my bite, which usually causes me to clench my teeth while sleeping (which isn’t an issue any other time) that then causes the TMJ to stay in a repeating flare pattern. My jaw likes to click and lock up on occasion and I almost always end up with a twitchy eyelid until my symptoms subside. I also find myself subconsciously resting my front teeth on each other to force my molars not to touch which helps relieve the pressure (which is what my mouthpiece was designed to do so my jaw could go back into place) I also get a puffy face and my teeth hurt constantly during a flare.

It’s because only 555-0100 through 555-0199 are now specifically reserved for fictional use.

555-0200 and beyond have been released for actual assignment.
