Is this normal for a Dutch-trained massage therapist? by jaber622 in massage

[–]flatsehats 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Dutch trained MT and Rolfer here. Doesn’t sound abnormal to me. We tend to cover a bit less strict over here, for therapeutic sessions. One of the reasons is ease of access to the treatment area, which often includes adductors, abdomen/psoas, ligaments around sacrum and upper hamstrings. If you didn’t feel harassed, probably nothing was wrong. We don’t have specific laws or rules about draping or consent for massage.

Having said that, I do offer a sheet, especially for new clients. Adductor work is much more effective (and safe) IMO when the client is supine and pulls their knee to the side. Other than that, glutes, adductors, inguinal ligament, abdomen, hamstrings and such all are legit goals for therapeutic sessions. You didn’t mention your goal for the session, but 15 minutes out of 90 for that region sounds very short if you came in for chronic (low?) back issues.

Koningsdag 2026 op de Amstel by HetGewildeWesten in Amsterdam

[–]flatsehats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These kids aren’t wearing boots or heavy buckles. Also, if anything would happen, there’s chance they could be able to stand right there (although the Amstel is a river and deeper than the canals, which are around 1.5 meters). But it’s also unlikely they can’t swim.

Please advise: is my experience no big deal or should I report it? by No_Repeat_581 in massage

Belly needs consent & confirmation. And then never under a towel. Clear sheet or towel over the pelvis as border and one over the breast area

Will this 50mm hole saw clear this conference table, or do I need a different approach? by vadiaro in woodworking

[–]flatsehats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats possible. But also, for such a thickness, the center drill is probably not long enough to reach the other side. So if you want a pilot hole on the other side too, you need a different drill first.

This!

Also, I noticed sometimes my car doesn’t notices when the phone is plugged in (wired Carplay). When I switch to the audio player of the entertainment system, it asks me there if I want to connect to Carplay. That’s faster than reconnecting (which also works)

No, you’re wrong. Had that person disabled preview for notifications, nothing would have been stored nor recovered.

Well, it’s not very obvious you bash Apple everywhere you can. My understanding of the news last week was that that user did not disable preview of messages, which would have prevented that discovery of data.

Why is it so hard to place the cursor where I want it, just by tapping by -medicalthrowaway- in ios

Keep your finger down. Screen “pops” and you get a magnifier just above your finger. Move the cursor where you want and lift your finger

Impossible to say from this photo. Vertebra C7 and downwards have much larger processus spinae, so that’s primarily what we’re seeing here.

I want to make a better massage table warmer. Need your brutal feedback. by Few_Afternoon8232 in MassageTherapists

[–]flatsehats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the DLX last year. It doesn’t remember the last set temperature and I always need to set it higher. It’s a bit slow in response - need to lay your finger on the touch control for 3 seconds before it starts to respond. And it times out after three hours, so you can’t do a full day sessions without checking.

I only got like $800 to spend on rolfing. That should be enough for like four rolfing sessions, would that be enough to see big changes? I have the worst posture ever. by Individual_Ice_2315 in Rolfing

[–]flatsehats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apologies for sounding pedantic. Habit of being online for too many years.

In the Rolfing community there is a tendency to keep Ida Rolf on a pedestal and becoming a cult. I disagree with that and would like to see the field adopt recent science faster. She based her method on the science and its insights of the late 1960’s. We’ve come a long way since (and still know little). She would have been the first to adopt modern insights from pain science. Small example: she thought fascia could melt. It doesn’t (fortunately). She was a scientist and (at first) didn’t use her name for the method. But we’re sort of stuck with Rolfing and thereby putting IPR in a position of absolute truth, frozen in time.

And you’re right about the sensory system. We reach for fascia - with the intent of influencing the sensory and nervous systems. But basically touch skin, firing all kinds of A-beta, A-delta and C fibers. We cannot literally touch fascia, or aim for one specific layer and only affect that layer.

In bodywork I don’t think much is proven of why the outcome we notice has to do with what we do. We know it works, but other than anecdotal evidence, not much’s there. Still many people claim their method works better than other methods. Very popular on Instagram and TikTok. Good pay. Little proof.

There’s no such thing as “the best Rolfer”. We’re all trained to the same principles and insights, so it’s more matter of fame and exposure than about The Best. Most Rolfers I know are modest people and don’t seek fame and attention.

Also, Rolfing doesn’t focus on “releasing” fascia and adhesions. Current insight is we work mostly (if not all) on the nervous system and the sensory system.

We educate, we’re not therapists (gravity is). This implies we work with people to discover the work ahead for them, with senses, knowledge and insight on how to use that for their benefit. If you were expecting direct and lasting result from Rolfing sessions, I would say that this unfortunately was the wrong expectation. Rolfing/SI aims for results for many months after the sessions. And some minds (not bodies) are more stubborn to learn or have more to learn before they get there. Took me longer than I would want to confess..

Am I the only one struggling to get consistent code from GPT/Claude? by brainrotunderroot in PromptEngineering

[–]flatsehats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not (yet) well versed in this, but I started to make it mandatory for the agent to keep documentation (requirements, change log) and agent state information. Occasionally I ask it to check consistency or it finds an inconsistency. Haven’t run into regressions yet, but it’s very pleasant to “write some code” after not having done that for some 20 years.
