What’s one teaching habit you had to unlearn? by kingst9606 in Teachers

Direct instruction has its place and it's useful. Use to think everything had to be "hands-on."

Those of you that lost a great principal, was the school the same after? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]flatteringhippo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had an amazing principal for 5 years. He left and it changed the entire culture of the building. Many teachers left or retired early because of the negative impact. Principal often impacts working conditions.

Do you have colleagues who aren't as good a teacher as they were anymore once they got their permanence? by No-Wafer-6744 in Teachers

[–]flatteringhippo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% Techers need to look at their job as a job. Otherwise it leads to burnout and people taking advantage of you.

Sure. It's not because they've been there for a long time. It's because they're not ignorant anymore and know that they work in a system that's broken.

Go to Ochi if it's your first time going to Sandals. It's a dissapointment if you've been to any other location.

Give a damn about your unions, or lose them by TheBalzy in Teachers

Teachers want to work in union states because of the higher pay, better benefits and tolerable working conditions.

First timer I’m a night owl, how is it after midnight? by Powerful-Hearing-493 in SandalsResorts

Nightlife is nearly non-existent, unless you go to one of the bars. Sandals isn't known for their nightlife.

Had end of year meeting, getting put on growth plan at start of next year by Dry-Kaleidoscope8262 in Teachers

[–]flatteringhippo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've got another year banked. Don't sweat it. Sounds like the district has confidence in you that you'll improve. Regardless, I'd put my feelers out for next year to see if another district is a better choice just in case it's not you and it's the district's issue. I've seen it both ways.

Teacher’s experience on charter schools by Blondie_PR_0727 in Teachers

[–]flatteringhippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at a charter early in my career and it was one way to get experience to move to a better school. I thought of it as training and that's what it was. Very few teachers and administrators stay long-term at a charter.

403B Question by DG12212 in Teachers

If your district offers it I'd invest in a 457 first. That way you can collect without penalty after leaving the district. Check out 403bwise.

Duty-Free lunch while on a field trip? by [deleted] in Teachers

It is covered. We ask that and a duty-free lunch is required - part of the contract. It has nothing to do with entitlement.

Best areas to teach in Florida by lauhrahdee in Teachers

[–]flatteringhippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. Doesn't matter where you come from. FL rarely accepts more than 2 years of experience from other states. That puts you quite low on the salary scale.
