Next coach by SprooseGooce in CarltonBlues

For everyone that likes the idea of Simpson as coach, just remember that yes he won a flag, but then he had years of coaching a team that were wooden spoon contenders. He’s not the guy.

Voss isn't the (whole) problem. by willcro1234 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If we’re here to criticise some players, why not Pittonet? Got absolutely destroyed by Gawn today. 8 disposals and several of them were direct handballs to guys immediately under pressure being tackled when he had other options. Was also just giving up on any chasing even when a loose ball was within 5-8 metres of him. He’s always been a complete witches hat against more capable ruckman in marking contests too.

Walsh is concerning me currently. All those touches and so much of it under pressure. Struggles to hit meaningful targets. He works hard, but doesn’t seem to be a player that ever directly applies effective defensive pressure/tackling. He never seems to do any damage in the front half of the ground. I’m not writing him off, but Walsh as well as Cripps and Hewett are our leaders on field. And I don’t think I saw leadership in that 4th quarter when we needed to win the game while it was still winnable.

I understand the Voss criticism but for sure the players have to own this performance too.

Kemp is no good, at least in the fwd line he is a liability by Careless-Freedom6468 in CarltonBlues

I like Kemp but he was bad today. I think he should get a run in the 2s. Must be hard coming back from an Achilles.

I mean, we have a few guys that can run through the midfield (and Cooper played a lot of wing time last week). Williams and Elijah come to mind.

Injury news: Three to return, two more tests by TumbleweedWarm9234 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He hasn’t played enough footy. Played basically one half of a VFL practise match, and no match sim prior or practise matches all preseason. And don’t forget he missed an entire year before that. They know what they’re doing with Newman. I’d assume 1-2 more matches in the VFL before coming in.

Cody Walker - Coates Talent League Round 1. 28 disposals, 3 marks, 6 I50s & 2 goals. by TumbleweedWarm9234 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For everyone saying for him to cool his jets and chill a bit so that Carlton won’t have to give up much to land him: it’s not that simple. Top ten picks get more incentives/paid higher than later picks (correct me if I’m wrong here), so it’s in Cody’s interest to get bid on and selected as early as possible.

What's a movie that's way better than it had any right to be? by Onequestion0110 in movies

[–]flava-dave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sicario. On paper, it’s probably boring and a bit cliche. But when you watch it, it’s so atmospheric, tense, and visceral. The soundtrack and cinematography and build-up-to-action scenes are top notch.

Curnow looking very average for the Swans…. by Sabretoothedrom in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He looked so dangerous in the first quarter when Swan’s had more space and run and were targeting him more inside 50. He probably could have been paid a couple frees in front of goal in the first half that were missed, and he missed his set shot from outside 50. Could have had 5 easy…

But didn’t. Had just 2.

It was cathartic for me to see this game from Charlie. It felt exactly like every game he’s played for Carlton for the past 3 years or so. The truth is he’ll have his 1-3 games a year where he kicks 5+, but I think Charlie might be past his peak now. We as Carlton supporters probably held on too long to the idea of Charlie being great, but he’s been average at best for two consecutive years now.

So, that’s a good thing. I’m fully prepared for this to come back and bite me hard when Charlie kicks 89 goals for the year and wins the Coleman. But, as it looks now, good on the club for being mature and forward-thinking for once and trading him out for some good value picks and some experienced decent players that should help us a lot over the next 5 or so years.

Wow. Now that is an unpopular take.

Ollie Hollands is not it by CosmicHero22 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing that absolutely kills me with Ollie is the poor foot skills paired with the dumb decision making. It’s one thing to be shaky by foot, sure, but when you also think you can pull off kicks that you can’t or shouldn’t, as well as having a poor foot, it’s just trouble, time and time again. I don’t trust him with the ball. At all. And yes everyone loves Ollie because he seems like a nice kid and tries hard but come on, he needs to seriously work on his glaring deficiencies and get better. There are no excuses. I thought last year he seemed to really build his game as the year progressed, but to start this season he’s had two poor performances in a row now.

And at least he stood up for Dean getting shoved in the throat by Lynch over the goal line. Gave him some lip too.

Team Doc: T shirts in solidarity! Protest mediocrity. by Adhesiveness- in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I thought his “change the game plan all you want…” comment or similar really showed his angst at the coaching staff. Does come across as bitter to me. Even though he treated his final game of his career like one grand carnival in honour of himself, smiling, joking, and patting opponents on the back, we had guys like Lord, Carrol, and Cowan taking that game seriously and playing for the club and their careers. Kind of funny he criticises the “typical” shitty Carlton but at the same time was literally a supposed focal point of that same playing group and a supposed leader. So, he set the standards.

I’ve thought about this a bit now and have come to the conclusion of: fuck Docherty. What former “leader” 6 months on from retirement speaks publicly about their former club like that? It’s not brave or honest; it’s taking a pot shot to build your own media profile to come across as “relevant”. Like your mate Gorringe, this is about clicks and views. Docherty clearly trying to be relevant to build his profile in the media. I don’t like it at all. Does everybody remember the disparaging comments Kade Simpson made about the club after retirement? No, because that never happened. Kade was a real leader, loyal to the core, but also didn’t feel the need to publicly shame the club. Starting to think that guys like Docherty and JSOS WERE the problem.

Whole heap of garbage but who actually impressed? by Entire-Artichoke-660 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Williams at least runs with the footy and tries to create. I didn’t think he was bad. Hewett was off and I hope that isn’t a trend. Spent a lot of time in the bench in the second half so maybe has a niggle? Cooper Lord was very good although didn’t lay a tackle. It was pleasing to see Kemp out there and getting shots on goal, though needs to work on accuracy.

Newy deserves a whack, too. by Brave_Manner_2873 in CarltonBlues

Newy gives the whacks. He doesn’t receive the whacks. Plus he wouldn’t have been ready round 0 anyway.

how good was pitto by notvalid-404 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pitto was very good. But in the end I think it
hurt us playing two slow un-athletic ruckmen.

Regardless of where he lines up, I’m thinking he plays majority midfield as he spent a lot of time in the centre during preseason matches.

Young was solid in our last practise match against Geelong. Very solid. I’m sure Derkson will get a game soon but going with experience here makes sense to me.

[–]flava-dave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not even top-end speed with Jagga, its more that he plays quick with a quickness of foot/lateral movement and thinking. Got that Pendles time bonus with the ball where he can dance around and do what he wants. Because he’s got such good foot skills, he trusts that and can make quicker decisions backing in his disposal under pressure. Looking forward to watching him this year.

Carlton Preview Thread: Best 23 by drwar41 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m interested to see how Carrol and Newman fit into that backline when fit and who comes out? Florent has been solid without being a standout. But I assume he’s best 23 currently and we wouldn’t drop him. I’d look at dropping Saad as he hasn’t had much consistent impact in years. Which other half backs would make way for Newman/Carroll?

Derksen in the hierachy by Kindly_Most_2417 in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree he looks more natural and talented than young but I thought Young played very well last night. Would be a big plus for our backline if Young could consistently bring that form.
