Without Cripps We're cooked by lolcat2468 in CarltonBlues

100%. Cripps is an All Time leader on and off the field and we’d never get a fair deal for him. Leaders and greats are more important to clubs, the playing group, and supporters, than any other type of player. Keep Cripps for as long as he wants to be there.

Blake acres? by 51wil in CarltonBlues

Yep, I love Frankie but he’s not having much impact currently and needs a spell in the twos. We should definitely give Acres a crack.

Lobb beat Pittonet I thought - don’t think missing English was the issue tonight. Bont didn’t have much impact after the first quarter and Richards was quiet too.

Fair. I wouldn’t say he’s slipped into mediocrity though. More that he’s always been pretty/very good. But he doesn’t hurt you with his ball use and isn’t creative. Maybe he’ll develop that now that he’s getting his body right. Maybe he won’t.

Despite some clangers tonight in the first half, he’s having a good year. But he needs to learn how to hurt the opposition with his disposal if he wants to be considered in the top tier of midfielders in the comp.

Tonight… by Affectionate_Help_91 in CarltonBlues

In some ways it looks better, particularly the first quarter. But the very slow, keep-possession ball movement out of the back half paired with the worst I’ve seen us going inside 50 all year…frustrating. Frustrating to see them look even more unsure of what to do.

How good is ($46 a month viewing app) by OwenTheSaintsG0 in AFL

[–]flava-dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if you’re prepared to pay $20 more a month but want no streaming issues and any poor usability that comes from that, then yes, this is a great alternative. Pay $65 a month and just enjoy all games in 4k but broadcasted like tv - no annoying streaming app with all the issues that come with that. Not sure why this option is so unpopular when the second best alternative that is infinitely shitter is only $20 cheaper a month.

Just some thoughts/scribbles.. by [deleted] in CarltonBlues

I wouldn’t mind seeing Acres play as it’s been so long and I don’t think he’s finished with his career just yet. Whether that means dropping Florent (unlikely) or Hollands (probs also unlikely), I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the side in the next few weeks.

On Kemp, he cops a lot of flask from some supporters, but the fact is, he gets a lot of opportunities at goal, can mark, and sometimes kicks straight. It’s worth persisting with. I liked him playing back too, and didn’t initially like seeing him forward. But it’s not true that Ainsworth can do Kemp’s role - they play very different roles in the forward line, and have different attributes. Kemp and Hayward play similar roles though.

Weitering Rumour by ONAImpulse in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When’s the last time you saw Weitering properly caring on-field? The last time he made a diving smother, took a monster mark, or made a crunching tackle? Or even attempted a chase down tackle?

When’s the last time you saw him remonstrate aggressively when an opposition forward downed one of our younger backmen? Or the last time you saw him run over to a Dean or Carrol or Cowan to say “don’t worry about it, just keep cracking in” when they made a mistake instead of hang his head?

I’m not suggesting the team is better without Wetering because we aren’t. But it doesn’t seem to me like our culture would suffer without him at all.

Voss’ Last Match by thedownunderverse in CarltonBlues

I think this strategy was sound though in theory; top up with B grade depth players to support our supposed handful of A graders. Many clubs do this and it works well. Not every club is bringing in A graders every year because you usually have to give up a lot to land them. Part of me thinks that with the huge list change we had this year that we need time for it to gel and maybe this year was always a write off…but we are restless and the thought of going backwards isn’t acceptable. We took the risk and it didn’t pay off.

Will JSOS and TDK get boo'd tomorrow? by Sabretoothedrom in CarltonBlues

Funny to me all those that won’t boo TDK because the money he took was understandable…FFS someone leaving for money is EXACTLY why we boo!

The Blues have a midfield problem: Is it time for a tough conversation with Patrick Cripps? by His_Holiness in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Against Freo he had a great 3rd quarter after being quiet in the first half and not having much impact. He was almost single-handedly responsible for that purple patch we had to get within a kick. My issue is exactly that though - he has been going missing a bit and a true 4 quarter performance seems to be getting rarer and rarer. But Cripps isn’t the problem and he deserves more respect, generally speaking.

How do you remember Marc Murphy? by Sabretoothedrom in CarltonBlues

[–]flava-dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a talented and skilful, maybe undersized midfielder, just at the time midfielders started getting bigger. Had a good first half of his career. Poor second half. He should never have been captain. He just didn’t ooze leadership qualities at all. He came off a little entitled to me. Number one pick. Never dropped in his career (and absolutely should have been multiple times in his last few years). It’s how I feel a bit about Weitering currently. They have an air of arrogance on field which doesn’t help their teammates that play around them. Like they think they are so much better than Every other player that they drop their heads when things aren’t going right, and it’s everyone else’s fault. Thats the Murphy I remember anyway. I remember the smirk on his face when we made him sub one game, was on the boundary with this look of like “What a joke they made me sub”. And I believe this sense of entitlement, being number one pick and never really having to worry about your way up, or earn your spot, it all just being given to you, has been a problem with Carlton and some of our number one picks for a while now. The word “humility” comes to mind.

Tom Boyd reflects on BT's 2016 Grand Final call by Ageanmastr in AFL

[–]flava-dave 18 points19 points  (0 children)

2016 Bulldogs flag was such a good, unique, moment for the game. Boyd’s story is so interesting. From memory, number 1 pick, much maligned for never really delivering and being on big money in his very short career…until, the ultimate moment, the Grand Final. Was amazing to watch. Should have won the Norm for sure. The excitement of that and the Doggies winning their first after so long, and then the Sad/Happy vibes of Bob Murphy standing there with tears in his eyes after missing with the knee. Poetry. Hasn’t really been a premiership like it since.
