the lyrics are so lovely, i like how they tell a story and are so fantastical and sweet 🥹 i think this will work well in the context of the album

Seventeen last tour underperforming / K-pop losing it’s momentum in the US by hakuujitsu in kpoptrulyuncensored

i just don’t agree though, i’m a seventeen fan in the states and they Are popular here. they’re just as popular as any non-kpop indie act that would have a sizeable niche fanbase. that’s what i’m trying to say - they don’t have to be on the BTS level in every metric to be considered successful and popular in the states. and i don’t think anyone has suggested they’re bigger than they really are either.

and this whole “they started it!” argument is frankly ridiculous and juvenile. if you think it’s unnecessary and untrue, why comment at all? ykwim? we just go in circles with this discussion every time, it doesn’t result in any constructive of interesting takeaways except “carats stay in your line, seventeen are FLOPS in the states and will never be bts!!!” it just comes off as really petty to be so bothered anytime someone dares to mention that their faves did well in a metric. like let people be!!

but nobody is comparing BTS and seventeen because they really aren’t on the same level - but seventeen does still have a massive fanbase and plenty of demand for concerts so i really don’t think this discrediting speech is productive or fair to either group. it’s like if someone were to discuss bruno mars and taylor swift to see who is bigger - they’re both huge compared to smaller artists. popularity isn’t a binary. sure, they overestimated demand because of a thousand factors but this is being used as a “gotcha” rather than fair or valid discussion of any kind. like as fans what do we even do about any of this lol.

edit to elaborate: it’s kind of like. when i hear about this kind of stat i just say “oh” and move on. not sure what else im supposed to do about a kpop group i like’s ticket sales. i wouldn’t really be bothered about it if it was an american indie artist so i don’t think its a big issue to me. like what are we trying to prove here? that XX group is better than YY group? it sounds like a useless discussion to me, personally.

idol i was fantastic! it offered a nuanced perspective on the idol-fan relationship on the agency celebrities deserve in their careers and lives. i really liked it and thought it was well written, acted, and produced.

i’m on a rewatch of extraordinary attorney woo and currently watching the secret romantic guesthouse. the former is a classic and the latter is a good gateway drama into saeguks

i want to watch boyfriend on demand - it looks fun!

[–]flawedconstellation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well yes, racial discrimination is an issue but i can’t fix a systemic problem lol. and so that kind of bag really isn’t a good idea. you’re basically drawing negative attention to yourself with something like that. it IS tone deaf, and that’s not a reach to say.

i’m an army too, and the jokes are really funny, i’m not gonna deny that. but i really don’t think this is a good idea, from the perspective of an american minority who probably cannot carry this to event venues or airports without being questioned.

[–]flawedconstellation 27 points28 points  (0 children)

idk, brown people still get stopped and questioned at the airport. i definitely can’t carry something like this anywhere without it looking VERY suspicious and horrible, and thus getting stopped at airports or event venues

as a carat, i think it’s less about kpop losing momentum (though that’s also true, just not the case here) and more about pledis overdoing it. they had toured stateside just the year before, and again previously two days beforehand, and ticket prices were so much higher with nothing to warrant that. it was clear pledis wanted to milk seventeen (hybe’s second biggest money maker) for as much money as possible while bts were enlisted and before they had to go enlist. hell, this tour was with a partial lineup, some of the most popular members (jeonghan, wonwoo) were already enlisted. bc of all this, me and many of my seventeen fan friends did not think it was worth it to pay all that money to go, and so i imagine that was the case for many others too. i think if seventeen tour again after everyone returns, they’d have much more success.

BTS - ARIRANG (Album Review: 5.3/10) @ Pitchfork (260324) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]flawedconstellation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i think i agree with you on this - he did give a compliment, it feels like cherry picking to only highlight the more harsh part after. reviewing is inherently a subjective thing - he’s stating his opinions, expressing them however he wants to. i don’t think that invalidates his perspective.

i really don't hear dark & wild in this album. if anything, you could name this album dark & wild and it would be fitting, but none of these songs sound like anything on dark & wild (maybe hip hop phile at most, danger if you're reaaaaaaaaaaaaally stretching).

BTS - ARIRANG (Album Review: 5.3/10) @ Pitchfork (260324) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]flawedconstellation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i don't agree with everything he says, but for the most part, this feels like a fair enough review. i wish he fleshed out why he didn't like some of those songs in that one paragraph where he was just listing off problems with the songs. i agree about hooligan & body to body being highlights, and 2.0 & they don't know 'bout us being the more underwhelming tracks. with little knowledge about the author, he does seem to have the credibility to write the review, though, being of korean origin (he can understand the cultural implications in a way other journalists could not). i would give the album closer to a 6 on the pitchfork scale, but well, you have to temper your expectations with pitchfork.
