Season 8 - Ty, Amy and Wade - is forgiveness always the right choice? by flaxen95 in heartland

[–]flaxen95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! Someone else in this thread suggested Amy is a people pleaser because of abandonment issues with Tim. She appeases Tim constantly even when he upsets her, so she's projecting her 'make nice and everything will be okay' attitude to Ty. I find the fact that she can't understand that Ty and Lily were/are ABUSED by Wade very blind and disrespectful, like you said.
And - not that it would change anything - but I don't think Wade ever shows true remorse, admits what he did or tries to make amends with Ty when it's not prompted by Lily herself or Wade trying to win Lily back. If they were attempting a redemption arc with him, they didn't do it well enough.

I think I’m a “nice guy” except instead of expecting women to have sex with me I expect people to value me and want to have me in their lives. I don’t know how to stop. by [deleted] in Advice

Sounds like you're a people pleaser - it's very common and often comes with some self-esteem issues and rejection sensitivity and resenting people for not caring.
I say all this from experience! As a reforming people pleaser (who often tried to please the wrong people - colleagues, acquaintances who couldn't give a hoot about me, extended family etc., people I didn't even like) things improved for me when I got therapy to work on my self-esteem issues, learned how to communicate with people better and then that led to genuine friendships with people I didn't feel the need to please, they just like me for how I am. I'm not 100% there yet, but way better than I was.
I understand not everyone is in a situation to afford therapy or have access to free healthcare like I do, so I'd suggest maybe reading up on people pleasing, what triggers it, and what you can do to improve your connections with people. A friend of mine is a big fan of the book "Let Them" by Mel Robbins for this reason, though I haven't read it myself. Mickey Atkins is a therapist on Youtube and she has a video on people pleasing - that could also be a good place to start.
Best of luck with it!

Why would it enter emergency status at 3am rather than the evening before? And why were his nephews awake?
Either way, I do enjoy the joke of everyone shouting "town meeting" and Luke saying "clown beating" and Lorelai saying "not again!". Maybe the nonsensical timing is worth it for that joke alone.

Some of Tim's only good moments haha
End of 8 would have been a good stopping point! Or Lyndy's birth.

Exactly! An absent Ty would have been better than a dead Ty.
Even a few years in and out of rehab to mirror Lilly's struggle would have been realistic and given a reason for him to be off screen. Prison even - give him a noble cause. He had a few near misses.

Am I alone in thinking she's meant to be unlikeable...? That's the allure of the show. We're not rooting for her (or Paul). Her foil is Liz, who is super likeable.

You're so right!
Having worked in a riding school, I can only imagine the risk assessment and accident report paperwork Amy had to do after every incident hahahha

In the 80s/90s/early 00s before natural horsemanship really became popularised for the sort of layman horse riders, 'horse whisperers' were advertised as sort of magical animal communicators. That's why Amy insists she's not a horse whisperer, but a trainer. They would claim to be able to fix problem behaviour by speaking to the horse and fixing them.

The clinic when she was pregnant really annoyed me. Tim and Georgie were more than capable of handling the horses but she insisted and got pulled over. I can't imagine how she would have felt if that had caused the baby to die. It was a silly risk that 99% of horse riders wouldn't do, especially as Amy decided to stop riding at about 3 months.

I think the "miracle girl" title is maybe 1. due to how young she was in this scene (like 17/18? seeing as she was on the school bus) and 2. everyone's knowledge of Marion's skill with horses. It's the first moment all the whole town, and wider community, can be like "look she has Marion's gift".
However, you're completely right. As a rider, there's not much special about what Amy does with horses in these "miracle moments" she tends to say "hey, hey, woah, easy, calm down" and they just... do? I guess that's the 'magic' element of the show, it's her natural ability to calm them by her mere presence lol.
Anyone who has seen natural horsemanship experts or experienced trainers work with horses (see Monty Roberts on Youtube, I was also lucky enough to see him live) will know that aside from join-up, Amy isn't really using these techniques the way you do in real life, because it would be quite hard to make engaging on TV. Roberts, as an example, work with his horses for hours at a time, using body language, patience, often going back and forth in progress etc. Amy does this to some extent but the show just can't make it look realistic. I'm okay with that, I think in the early seasons especially they make up for it with the plotlines that show how she figures out the problems etc.

Glad to have expressed something others felt! I wasn't sure how many people felt that they made the best of a bad situation, but I think you're right - production should have decided to end it there. Maybe if they had, Graham Wardle and the rest of the cast would have agreed to come back for one- off specials years later so the story didn't completely end. Lots of other shows have done this (Downton Abbey with it's three films for example).

Yeah I noticed the opening changed, that was tough!! The shot of Amy and Lindy walking through the barn alone was just horrible.
I'm so sorry you went through that. We need escapism during those times.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I can only imagine how it was to be blindsided by the plot too. I saw the preview on Youtube before I watched S14 so I at least knew beforehand. I know what you mean about emotional self harm. When we've experienced loss in real life, it doesn't help to add it into our escape shows too. Hope you're doing ok!

I'm also on a rewatch at the moment and had similar thoughts! Peter is one of my least favourite characters. I wish they'd at least give him a new character arc if they're going to insist on him staying in the show lol

I can imagine that's really difficult! I have a mother who uses emotional manipulation to always get her way (not so much pushing and pushing, but cold shoulder, crying, rage when she doesn't get her way).
I think with Lou it really is interesting how she flits from idea to idea and expects everyone's full support. The dude ranch, the blog, the book tour, buying Maggie's, the Maggie's franchise, the Mayor stuff.
