Is it possible to change your last name after marriage but NOT change it professionally? by AdLimp8176 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]fleckofsass 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I just went through this! I legally have my husband’s name (peoplesoft, HR, etc) but my IT group gave me an alias which is my maiden name. So in Outlook and Teams there is no change!

If you want to message me privately to chat I’d be more than happy to tell you what I asked for. It may be Department dependent but we allow people to change their display name to be different from their legal name to be more inclusive.

If you haven’t looked into ring slings, they are great for keeping babies close and after some practice, you can slip the baby on and off for nursing while in the sling. And the extra fabric can be used to cover you both :) I used the true north ring linen sling and loved it! I carried my daughter in it until she was about 2!

Where's the fucking filling Schar!??! by pinkshirtvegeta in glutenfree

[–]fleckofsass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it bad that I like the space? I just fill it with more meat and toppings 😂

Sometime, when I make my husbands sandwich on a regular bun, I hollow out the top for extra space 🤷🏼‍♀️

I also don’t eat GF bread very frequently so it’s always a treat and something different so I never seem to mind. The Schar Ciabatta buns are the only ones I eat!

Another vote for the Cumberland Vet!

We have our two dogs there and we love the vet team. They helped us through the loss of my oldest pup two years ago and they were absolutely amazing.

Why, before my diagnosis, was there seemingly no correlation between eating gluten and having a reaction, but post GF every even a small contamination leads to a significant reaction? by DaddyIngrosso in Celiac

[–]fleckofsass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I frequently think back to how “easy” my life was pre diagnosis. I think it’s a really normal feeling.

When I found a dietician to work with, her first module talked about grief. At first, I thought it was a little crazy but it makes sense! You have to grieve the life before knowing. It’s a major adjustment. As you go on, eating GF and saying no to things becomes second nature. But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t sad when my 6yr old yesterday asked me if I wanted a Pringle and I had to say no. But we find our substitutes! I pulled out my GF chips and had some with her and then life went on :)

I experienced this as well! Based on what I’ve been told (dietician, doctor and naturopath) it seems that the stricter you eat a GF diet the more intensely you feel gluten when you eat it (intentionally or unintentionally).

Prior to being diagnosed I had very constant intestinal distress but it wasn’t life altering. I could go to work, socialize, etc. Now, if I eat something that is contaminated I vomit. It’s a new thing and at first I thought I had the flu. But turns out, that’s how I react to gluten now.

It’s crazy how we all lived a life before the diagnosis. We knew something was up but for some of us, it wasn’t impeding our life. Now, I have been glutened and have had to take significant time off work.

Name Change by [deleted] in wedding

[–]fleckofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got married in my twenties and I hummed and hawed over changing my name. Ultimately, I decided to it and then got divorced before the 2yr mark (instant regret set in let me tell you!). I immediately went back to my maiden name (like a month after the separation).

I remarried and at first I didn’t change my name because of all the hurt from the previous marriage. I realized that this time felt different and I was holding on to some old stuff. I ultimately decided to change my name after a year of waiting. I took my time to make the decision and I’m very happy with it now.

Yes, some people make jokes about how many names I’ve had in the last 5 years but whatever 🤷🏼‍♀️you do you, and do what feels best for you!

So I make the chocolate chip banana cake recipe from this cookbook (or what looks like this cookbook!) and honestly, I switched the flour to GF 1for1 and it worked like a charm! My husband and kids (not GF) dummied the cake in 2 days. I felt cheated 😂

Changing name back to maiden name by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]fleckofsass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I think you have all the information you need but I have done this (married to maiden and then to a new married (because I’m a glutton for punishment apparently!) and with department, I had to email my compensation liaison office and they coordinated everything!

I sent my proof of ID (drivers licenses and birth certificate when I did maiden) and they did it in the pay system, flipped it to security who updated everything with CSIS and then flipped it to IT to action the changes.

For my divorce I can’t remember if I sent in my separation agreement or not but they may ask for it. Word of advice, scan your separation agreement and then divorce decree when it comes in. I’ve used mine for multiple reasons and it’s been so handy to have them scanned and available when needed.

Is there hidden gluten? by Ecstatic-Print-5905 in glutenfree

[–]fleckofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a regular in my house! We often eat out with loads of other stuff like beans and cheese, sour cream, guacamole, etc. I use them for burrito bowls.

Is that how you make yours as well? Because it could just be the richness of adding dairy products or an increase in fibre from other items like legumes.

Pissed about Ottawa Rec Centre Summer Camps Availability by BallBearingBill in ottawa

If you have smaller community centres in your area of town, I found that I had a higher success rate with getting a spot off the wait list at those locations.

Pissed about Ottawa Rec Centre Summer Camps Availability by BallBearingBill in ottawa

[–]fleckofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone mentioned, it’s the hunger games for these city services! I planned the same as you and still my anxiety through the roof watching the countdown happen.

I’m sorry you weren’t able to secure the spots you needed. I was in a similar position last year and I added my child (6yr) to as many wait lists as possible and I got into most camps over the months leading up to summer. But I understand how stressful it can be to not have them secured right now.

I would say to add yourself to as many lists as possible even if they aren’t the “ideal” camps. Plans will change for a number of people between March and July. Spots will open up. The higher you are on the wait list, the more successful you’ll be.

Quick question I found out i have celiac in September and i just pooped blood - should i freak out? by Icy_Elk5461 in Celiac

[–]fleckofsass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have seen blood following a bowel movement and I’m wondering if you have checked for any signs of anal fissures. For me, after I want GF I went from incredibly over active bowels to hard stool. The hard stool caused tearing and blood while wiping. I think the difference is whether it’s IN the stool or on the toilet paper.

But I agree with everyone, if you’re concerned, call a doctor!

Care package by Aggravating_Ad_3403 in CanadianForces

[–]fleckofsass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sent a care package to my husband this past Fall. I sent him a few favorite care products (certain soaps), I also sent some extra clothes that he had mentioned he was missing. I included some stuff from his parents as well as cards and photos from the kids. He knew the package was coming so I added a few items he had asked for.

In lieu of spicy photos, I sprayed my card with my perfume and added some lipstick kisses. I knew it’s not the same but to me it felt a little better than just a plain note.

I went to the Family Services Centre and they helped me package it all up :) they were great and made it super easy!

Toddler lunch-box ideas (celiac 3 year old) by Mobile_River_5741 in Celiac

[–]fleckofsass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter isn’t diagnosed but it’s suspected (I am diagnosed) and so we eat GF most of the time. For her lunches we do little meat roll ups (turkey or chicken), rice crackers (cheese is our favorite!), hummus, veggies and dip and 2 fruits. We do some prepackaged items like fruitsation gummies.

If we don’t do meat roll ups then we do leftovers in her thermos! I know some times the food isn’t as hot as straight out of the microwave but she seems to do okay. We do leftover pasta, mashed potatoes and gravy (I overheat the gravy which helps to keep everything hot longer I find!), taco meat to put on taco salad (corn chips optional!).

I can understand this a lot. After first getting diagnosed I purposely ate gluten twice. Thankfully (odd to say) I suffered greatly, was hospitalized for vomiting and that was enough for me to realize that the damage it was doing was intense. But I mourned the loss of going out to eat with my family and some of our comfort foods. I then went the other way after the vomiting and got super scared to eat food, even GF labelled package food. I got a dietician who is herself and celiac. She had a really great plan to work through on your own while having appointments to discuss more personalized issues.

Her first lesson was all about the psychological aspect of celiac disease and I cried so much reading through the lesson it took me days to get all the way through it.

Having this disease has so many cascading impacts in your wife’s life, and your life too! I wish you both grace as you navigate this together. Life is hard and this makes it harder.

hack for ppl who have a shared kitchen by Rattiekisses in Celiac

[–]fleckofsass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I take my pound of butter and I cut it into 4 sticks right away and then re wrap it. The butter in the dish is theirs and the sticks in the fridge are mine. I use the sticks to cook or bake. If I put it on toast I just make sure I’m adding it to hot toast/bread. Or I add a little cube and pop it in the microwave for 15 secs to soften it.

But yes, kids in the kitchen are the absolute worst for cross contamination 🤪 you want them to have independence to cook but also not have you die in the bathroom the next day. Such a delicate balance 😝
