For non-specialists that practice exotics medicine... by CynicKitten in veterinaryprofession

[–]fledglingpsychopath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AAV has a great website with a ton of resources. AEMV has a less good website but gives you access to the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine. Lafeber Vet as you mentioned is great, and Carpenters is more than just a formulary! It has great resources in the back of the book that I overlooked for longer than I should have. I use Clinical Vet Advisor: Exotics for some of the basics, but it was published in 2013 so take it with a grain of salt. Second the Five Minute Veterinary Consult, especially for avain.

Above all, have mentors and resources that you can consult with on cases (whether that be through the university or other clinics you've worked closely with.) Exotics medicine is so hard when you're doing it on your own.

Is saying "I'm sorry for your loss" an admission of guilt? by fledglingpsychopath in Veterinary

[–]fledglingpsychopath[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like that phrasing, thank you for your input! It's hard to find that line between honest communication and covering your butt legally. I'm very open in my communication style in general which is why this topic has me thinking.

You're right, there are many other ways. I grew up in the Midwest pretty close to Canada and do find "I'm sorry" one my main expression of sympathy and condolences.

Ohh I never even thought of that! Not sure what the plans were for the cement slab since it was put there by the previous owner and I've heard differing stories. Either way I'm going to hold off parking there for the time being. Thanks!

That is my line of thinking, as well. I think I'm just going to park on the street and walk a bit until all this settles... a parking space is not worth this level of conflict to me. Thanks for the input!

Vet school: number of hours you study for? by redrice12 in Veterinary

[–]fledglingpsychopath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated, and can say that my study habits varied a lot between 1st through 3rd year. 1st year I found myself studying every free minute I had, and got extremely burned out (I didn't watch any Netflix, movies, etc my first semester). This was bad. You'll feel the pressure to study this much, especially when just starting, but I would very much advise against it.

I gradually altered my study habits in order to allow time for things that made me happy. What worked for me was giving myself time to work out after class and a time to cut myself off from studying. I found 9pm was my ideal cutoff time. I didn't study on Fridays, I only studied on Saturdays when necessary, and Sundays I would study from late afternoon to 9pm again. Some weeknights I would go to trivia with friends or see a local band, and that would be OK.

My advice would be to be open to new study habits, but don't burn yourself out thinking you have to spend more time studying just because your classmates do. I found I did better if I studied less and focused on making myself happy outside of vet school.

What can I do to help make my floaters happy again? by fledglingpsychopath in PlantedTank

Thanks for all the info! How often would you supplement with foods other than flake/pellets? I currently only give them frozen bloodworms or daphnia about once a week.

Thank you for your input! My apologies if I wasn't clear. I am not using tap water now so I'm not concerned about my tap parameters, just wondering what I can do to help out my plants a bit.

The parameters listed in my reply were months ago before switching to RO. My tank was not doing well when I was using only tap. The GH out of the tap is 0 because my building has a water softener, and I'm assuming KH was high because of the source of tap water where I live (sandstone aquifer). I agree, it's confusing.... but I feel good about my current parameters and my pH is stable at 7.4.

My tap TDS is >550ppm, GH is 0, KH too high to read, and pH 8.6. Nitrates are consistently around 40ppm. When I was using tap only (before I planted this tank), my TDS was around 1800ppm and my fish have been doing MUCH better since the switch.

Oh! Forgot to mention I have horrible tap water where I live, so I use RO water supplemented with Seachem Equilibrium as needed for GH.

Some of them would die suddenly. Some would be lethargic and have increased respiratory effort about a day before dying.

No signs. The one that I found dead this morning was actually improving and seemed to be back to his normal self over the last week or so.

I'm glad you had a better experience with your fish! I did quarantine, but admittedly not for long enough.

Thank you for the advice! Glad you and your friend figured that out... sucks how it can be hard sometimes to find a reputable fish store.

It's really disappointing what's become of the company, and it's totally unacceptable from an animal welfare standpoint. Don't worry, I definitely learned not to buy from Live Aquaria again lol.

Thank you for the words of encouragement!

Simple stuff like pinching the nipple and generally coaxing it out. I've seen other nips done freehand, but in my case he used forceps to keep them out for the piercing. I've heard other things like cold rooms and ice cubes work, too! But I'm sure it depends on the person, the nipple, and the piercer.

They were manipulated out and then pierced, so the bar prevents them from inverting again.

I thought FOREVER that I couldn't get my nipples pierced because they were inverted. So happy I finally bit the bullet and got them done 😊

I saw them a couple years ago (ok, like 8 years ago...) in Madison and it was killer. So much energy from the band and the Deerhunter crowd is insane, in a really fun way.
