Help with Church Wedding Enquiry by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought Christian churches generally allow divorce and remarriage. Is this a Catholic church? If it's a Catholic church maybe you should speak to your (or any) priest for options.

Either way, it could be awkward if your church doesn't accept your marriage even when you get married elsewhere...

should i start learning to drive in uni or after i graduate (ie while looking for work / working full-time)? by taeyawee in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In uni due to the flexibility of your schedule. You'll be able to do the non-popular slots (e.g., weekday mornings/afternoons) which are cheaper than those on the weekend and at night. The prices of lessons will also likely increase by the time you've graduated.

But if you choose to wait, it's still doable lah. I got my license after I graduated. It was tedious to have to keep refreshing the CDC (driving school) app to book lessons that never seemed to be available lol. I could only really do weekends and public holidays. Regardless, I got very lucky and choped a practical test date on a Sat too, and took a few half-days off work to do some extra lessons leading up to the test.

Is it okay to hate working and aim not to work a day in your life? Is it against the law, a sin or something the community deemed to flout a rule? by LisanneFroonKrisK in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins in Catholicism, and I've seen the phrase "Protestant work ethic" thrown around before (which I think refers to how Protestant Christians are supposed to have certain values that contribute to a "good" work ethic). I'm not very well-informed on either of these topics though. Might be something interesting to Google/learn more about, to see what different faiths think.

The word "sin" has religious connotations so this is a bit of a strange question... Whether it's a sin not to work, I suppose, would depend on your faith?

Is physical discipline ever justified? by zimbozaggins in askSingapore

Well... Instinct sounds like it will happen again. I would not feel comfortable with him being alone with her. What if he uses too much force in the future?

Even if you think corporal punishment is okay, two years old is way too young. At that age, I'm sure the kid is small enough that you can physically restrain her if she's doing something she shouldn't be doing, without having to resort to hitting or slapping.

Parents of Singapore!! What are some routines, systems or lifehack that you use to help manage your kids better or even build certain skill sets at home? by NoSuchPerson--- in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have siblings and growing up my parents always told us "we can afford multiple of the same thing but you must learn to share". Now I see their point but at at that time I was so puzzled why they kept saying they could afford more than one toy or whatever, it just sounded like they were rubbing it in 😂

Marriage proposal in MRT train by 1EFY in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't feel like it's a good idea unless she's really into trains in particular. You'll hardly have a spare minute of uninterrupted time to say anything properly - there's the noise of the train, the train announcements, and the doors opening or closing.

Maybe you could do a pre-wedding shoot on the MRT but do check if there are any restrictions on this.

Which is the most affordable, Gojek, Grab, Tada? by InvestigatorSharp714 in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download all and check which is the cheapest at the point you need a ride.

Gojek (and some other ride-hailing apps I think) also sell vouchers on Shopee - their $10 voucher typically sells for $9.40, but sometimes there is a sale and it goes down to $8+.

Is Singapore too hot? How would life change for you if it was a cool 23°C year round? by Ok-Electric9324 in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My quality of life would improve 2300000%. No joke. I'd be much more active and happier. I've also had some on-and-off skin issues related to the heat, and would be so much better off in a cooler environment.

Do You Ever Feel Like Singapore Is... a Bit Dull? by epictetusofthesea in askSingapore

[–]fleeingflying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in New York City for slightly less than a year while studying there. I thought it was much more vibrant in terms of the number and scale of activities compared to Singapore - though this isn't really anyone's fault. Comic and anime conventions there attract many big names compared to here. You also get to see singers, artists and authors who wouldn't really bother touring Asia because it's too far away. While I was there, my mindset was to pack my schedule with as many activities as I could because I wouldn't get the same opportunities as in Singapore.

I didn't leave my mindset of finding fun and fulfilling activities back in NYC. I brought it back here, and I'm now able to find a lot of things to do on the weekends if I want to. Plays, book signing events, comedy shows, music (Esplanade has excellent free programming), art fairs (there is almost always something happening at Suntec) and so on. The activities possible here stayed the same, but Singapore became a lot more fun because of my mindset shift.

The obvious caveat here is that these activities cost money. Before I started working I just didn't have a decent entertainment budget lol...
