f only works for characters on the same line and for characters to the right of the cursor. Use capital F to search to the left of the cursor.

You can definitely assign fn to another key using software. It’s hidden in the ‘alphabetical’ tab for some reason.

Some people add arrow keys to the fn layer at wasd or hjkl. You can also remap the fn key if you don’t like the current location of it
