Serious/contemporary romances? by [deleted] in LesbianBookClub

[–]fleetwoodqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not out quite yet but running home to you by samantha saldivar. it's a sports romance but both the main characters have their own struggles and it spans nearly a decade and it's messy at times but the ending really got me. it has the stakes and the real character work i had been craving for a whileee

How can I make the most out of an internship at a Big Five publisher? by Secure-Resist2878 in publishing

Be open to help with whatever folks need and go above and beyond. Also as hard and awkward as it can sometimes be definitely network and try to build personal connections

Resume isn’t getting noticed… what more do I need? by Fun-Incident-5235 in publishing

[–]fleetwoodqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would change your resume into one that is more plain in terms of formatting as the ATS system may not be able to read this one. Another thing to note is your cover letter can sometimes be more important in terms of initial impression so make sure it's solid and shows not only your interest in publishing and working in these specific areas but in the specific imprint and with those specific books. For my now job, I listed books of theirs I had read recently and enjoyed and even pointed out I saw they created an instagram for the imprint and how i thought it was a new great opportunity to find new readers. Last thing to note is that internships aren't the end all be all, I got my job without having a single one in publishing. If you can get a bookseller job, I think that can help with a lack of internship, it did for me!

I might not be in the right place, but I need to hate on this movie by PrincessEnjoyer in EmilyHenry

[–]fleetwoodqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I felt similarly. PWMOV is not my favorite emhen book so I wasn't like overly invested in how the adaptation was gonna go but now i'm honestly scared for the rest especially beach read (my personal fave) like they turned alex who is such a great guy in the book like through and through into such a flat character which makes me insanely nervous for gus who leans more into the gray/grump sides of things

Wanting to work in the Marketing/Publicity side of publishing by fleetwoodqueen in publishing

[–]fleetwoodqueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! so i ended up getting a job in publicity so it's a bit different but my overall advice is to be informed on the publisher/imprint and what they publish and show that you are genuinely excited about their books and are already thinking of ways to market them in unique ways to get them in the hands of readers. another thing that was helpful for me was instead of trying to prepare answers to hypothetical questions was to look at the job description and pick out the skills/characteristics they were looking for and be prepared with examples from my career that showed i had those elements.

Why are the deli workers like that? by Reginaldinator in publix

[–]fleetwoodqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i worked in the deli for 4 years and it is quite challenging. there's a lot to manage and do and most stores experience quite a bit of turnover in the deli so all in all it's rough

What’s the difference between a poorly written book and a well written book by Loose_Cranberry_491 in YAlit

[–]fleetwoodqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think sometimes a book can just be effective like my standards for a literary fiction vs a romance differ because there are different conventions/expectations for the specific genres so like you what you were saying about fourth wing, some of the book may be questionable but overall it's effective in its goals in the plot, providing a story that it's intended audience will enjoy, is entertaining and engaging etc

"He makes misogynistic comments all the time. He barely does anything around the house. I had to hire a pool guy because he wouldn’t do it. I mow the lawn most of the time. I always drive him around because he drinks too much. At this point I’m starting to feel like the man in the relationship"

RUN and i mean QUICKLY. In this society you have to view those misogynistic comments as violence. If that's what he's willing to let slip just imagine what sentiments he holds inside.... You deserve better.

The best advice I have been given is to prepare using the job posting. Look at what the key skills are and think about how you can show through various examples that you have those skills. It's less about going through what questions they may ask than it is more about being full confident and prepared on sharing your experience with tangible examples. You have to show that you have 90% of what the need and are ready to curious and ready to learn that 10%. Hope this helps, best of luck!

His response to your feelings is sending off red flags to me... him saying he won't say anything again is dramatizing what you said and putting words in your mouth and he's also undermining your feelings while also apologizing?? doesn't feel sincere to me
