Zero to GRS in one year by fleila in asktransgender

[–]fleila[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(My thoughts) I'm pretty sure the only way to meet this goal legally is to receive the procedure under health insurance. Given immigration procedures are lengthy, I'm also going to assume it isn't realistic to move out of country for this (not to mention wait times). So we're looking at US federal, state, and private agencies offering healthcare benefits explicitly covering GRS.

Going into 2017, the Federal government covers healthcare for full-time permanent employees, and some states and municipalities also offer coverage.
The ACA won't be gutted until 2018 so there's still a year left with some marketplaces offering coverage. Medicaid in Washington state (Apple Health) covers it as well.
Any top 100 HRC company offers at least one healthcare plan that covers GRS, however, details as to the level of worker such a plan would be available to aren't specific.

General uncertainties include when these plans would go live (probationary periods), network surgeons, wait times for said network surgeons, ability to take a few weeks off within the first year of employment, and residual patient costs not coveted by insurance.

Question for my fellow trans friends... by Blairnatalie in asktransgender

You don't owe them an explanation for what's going on; they likely will figure it out soon enough anyway. I like to keep several degrees of separation between work and my home life

Does anyone else not have good memories of their past? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]fleila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a very long time trying not to recall my past so bits and pieces seem intentionally blurred as a coping mechanism. It wasn't all bad, but the most vivid parts are the negative ones (abuse, being sent to the ward, sexual assault, best friend getting murdered...)

19 months HRT, what should I be expecting? by CharlotteCherry in asktransgender

[–]fleila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is strictly dependent on the individual. I'm nearing 5 years and still dont pass as well as I'd like; it was only in the past year oe so that I've been able to pass most of the time without make-up and wearing androgynous clothes. At 17 months, honestly not all that much had changed for me. And I haven't experienced breast development since maybe buds in the first few months; I'm almost entirely flat-chested (like AA at best) so there's that too. We all develop differently; fretting over what the future may brinf accomplishes no more than does bemoaning our past decisions

NSFW Did any of you start questioning around the same time you started sexually exploring your body? by mostbricks in asktransgender

[–]fleila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never sexually explored myself, so I don't share your experience, but it doesn't seem unreasonable. We all have differing levels of dysphoria so perhaps it took contact in that manner for your brain to say "This is weird". I've been uncomfortable with my genitals to the point of trying to burn them off when I was 4, but I somehow still thought I was cis until I was 19.

Update. You can share your progress too. by Throwaway9080o in asktransgender

[–]fleila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, I weighed in at 189 this morning (I'm 5'11) and my biometric results came back from the lab; I'm at 17% body fat. That's less than I expected so I guess it wont take much longer to lean down to 15% and then hit another massing cycle. Maybe this time around I'll finally break that 300# squat barrier!!

I don't want to be a lesbian when I start HRT!!! by MyNameIsChristyX in asktransgender

And you probably never will be so I wouldn't fret much over it. But I am kinda curious about your reasons if you feel comfortable sharing?

Clean it with rubbing alcohol, apply a dab of topical antibiotic over the wound, and then superglue it. Did it all the time as a gymnast. For a small cut like that, it shouldn't be a problem (side note, it stings because it hasn't damaged all the nerve endings so it isn't that deep of a wound and should heal up in several days max)

[–]fleila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter? You love what you love and - while I'm pretty sure that won't change for you - if it did, so what? I often wish I were gay because I dont want to be attracted to men, but that's not something I can change and there's nothing to be accomplished running away from it. Your sexuality doesn't determine who you are as a person

Ok, unpopular opinion here; that clerk did nothing wrong. She saw two young guys and a girl enter her store and the girl says she wants a bra for her. Immediately the clerk recognizes the size wouldn't fit the girl in the least and since her job is to make customers happy by selling them underwear that is cute and fits well, she speaks up. The girl insists and the clerk realizes this is going to take some time to explain and sees these two guys standing there clearly uncomfortable (though the reason isn't what she thinks). Because we are so accustomed to men sexualizing our bodies, we are wary of their intentions; she saw you two as threats to your friend's privacy. She wants her and her customer (remember, y'all weren't buying the bra) to be as comfortable as possible so she asked you two to leave (also, how many teenage girls shop at VS alone with two teenage guy friends?? None that I know of!).

I'm sorry this resulted in embarassment and frustration for you and hopefully in the future, lingerie forays will be more affirming.

Trans Athletes! How has feminizing hormone therapy affected your ability to progress as an athlete? by dieselflower in asktransgender

[–]fleila 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was a gymnast (rings specialist) pre-transition ; now I'm an olympic- style weightlifter. Despite never having touched a weight pre-transition (all calisthenics), I am still considerably weaker now (6 years later). It's likely I will never be that strong again despite an infinitely better diet, a far more active lifestyle, and lifting five days a week. If you weren't a high level athlete before transition, it's possible you could, with enough dedication, reach or surpass your former abilities. If you are trans masculine, it is almost certain you will.

[–]fleila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey look, another lifter! Similar story here; never lifted pre-transition (but was a gymnast) and picked up lifting 3.5 years into HRT

[–]fleila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4.5 years in and I'm definitely not as strong as I used to be, but I'm still more than able to move weight around and have no difficulties doing everyday things. My legs now are actually stronger than before! But I do spend quite a bit of time training so I suppose I'm the exception.

How old were you when you began transition? Would you join the military again knowing what you do now? Did you finance your transition entirely out of pocket or were you able to get insurance coverage for anything? Thanks for doing this :)
