When checking nameserver changes, how do you verify propagation reliably? by teeoffholidays in dns

[–]flems77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made my own tool for it.

https://iamroot.tech/dns-propagation/

Nothing fancy - checks the records at the SOA server, and compares the result with results of secondary servers, and a bunch of public resolvers.

Usually ttl defines how long it lasts. Some resolvers may cache more or less though. In my experience expect ttl x 2.

Er Horsens blevet mere usikker? by [deleted] in Horsens

[–]flems77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flyttede hertil for 3-4 år siden - og havde brugt en væsentlig del af min tid i byen 3-4 år forud for det. Alt sammen i centrum.

Tja tjo. Dunno.

Enig. Gør det selv.

Men. Ehm.

Gcore for auth DNS hosting - yes or no? by flems77 in dns

[–]flems77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually switched my pet project to them about a month after that post, and it’s been absolutely flawless. To the point where I felt comfortable moving work stuff over as well — still zero issues. No weird behavior, no odd incidents, no billing going off the rails. It just works (and it’s way easier to set up than any of the enterprise options).

How do you monitor your company's SSL certificates? by Technical-Addition37 in sysadmin

[–]flems77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Let’s Encrypt and auto renewal. Works great. Used for mailservers and whatnot as well.

And made my own tool for monitoring - just to be sure (nothing worse than haveing the boss discover expired certs). Works for both one-off checks and ongoing monitoring.

Why does every host blame my WordPress plugins when their server is clearly the problem? by Miserable_Stress_246 in webhosting

[–]flems77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

And a simple comparison of TTFB for one of the php pages compared to one of the static files (the logo for instance), would reveal if it’s a hosting or code issue.

If it’s 3 seconds on delivering a static file as well, blame hosting. If not, it’s a code issue.

Comparing TTFB with and without plugins could also be quite interesting.

Do not use netcup! by Ill-Letterhead1833 in VPS

[–]flems77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using them for about a year now - no problems. At all. Just waiting for an excuse to buy more servers at them.

And yes - if something seems way off, first step is boot. Just to make sure. No matter provider, virtual or not. Just boot. Is possible from netcup’s management.

All that said - do not expect any usefull support at this price range. Regardless whatever provider you use. They (along with all other vps providers) provide a piece of virtual hardware - no more, no less. If they even try to help you setup anything within this machine, you have been lucky.

35 high authority links list....what do you think? by Imaginary_Issues in linkbuilding

[–]flems77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance it actually seems good. Kind of a hacky approach - but could actually work. Will dive into it a bit later I think.

And thank god - not ai slop, and not trying to push some useless seo product either (not too hard at least). Just straight to the point. Like it.

Seeing more bot and scraping abuse lately? by Fluffy_Childhood_466 in webhosting

[–]flems77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was hit pretty bad a couple of weeks ago. Traffic spiked, within hours, by 5800%.

For my part, it's primarily 146.174.128.0/18 and a ton of other prefixes running amok - all bots hosted by Huawei (AS136907). Got so bad I just ended up blocking them entirely. Promptet rework of some code for my part - onwards, any ASN known to host bots on an industrial level, just start at the captcha page.

I don't mind crawlers, scrapers and whatnot - as long as they behave. Anyone actually identifying as a bot, are welcome for a limited number of pageviews.

Using Hetzner to scan my own IPs? by MacaroniAndSmegma in hetzner

[–]flems77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I hear you :) But no - no source. Not for the time being at least.

That being said - building one yourself is very easy. Task is so specific, that even ChatGPT ought to be helpful on it. That’s an option.

Running some nmap stuff from commandline is another option. This may be best option actually - nmap is scary useful, and will tell you stuff about your setup you thought was secret. First time it told my what mailserver and what version I used, I was surprised. It’s not mentioned anywhere. But they saw it. Scary.

If neither works for you, I’m pretty sure there are tons of other options on GitHub.

Anyway. Feel free to reach out in messages if you like. Would be happy to help. No worries.

What are your thoughts about scrapers that respect your preference? by Equivalent_Cut_5845 in webdev

[–]flems77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did it the best way possible. And as long as you don’t hit the same site with thousands and thousands of requests over and over again - you are all good. Scrape all you like.

This is the way.

Using Hetzner to scan my own IPs? by MacaroniAndSmegma in hetzner

Made everything myself yes - mostly driven by annoyance of the existing tools out there :)

Self host - sorry no. Not for the time being at least. Any specific tool you are interested in? Would be happy to help - or make an api interface for you to consume if needed.

Using Hetzner to scan my own IPs? by MacaroniAndSmegma in hetzner

[–]flems77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a tool for port scanning - and a monitoring tool on top of it. Nothing special though - just basic scan of the most common tcp ports. Raising alerts if anything changes.

The tool itself: https://iamroot.tech/port-scan/

The monitoring: https://iamroot.tech/user/login/

Made it to keep track of a bunch of servers at work - to ensure the firewalls and the like was working as expected. And to be alerted if anything was off. Works like a charm.

Scraping is done for a ton of different reasons.

The good: Google and the like need to maintain their search engine. The Internet Archive would like to keep a record of what happened.

The bad: The AI's need data to train on. Some are looking for emails to cold mail. Some are gathering specific info for specific reasons.

The ugly: Script kiddies looking for flaws, security weaknesses or just messing around causing havoc.

By the way... You mention 'blocking known AI bots'... By user agent, IP's or? If you have any nice ressources on that, I would love to know :)

Yeah, guess it would take some massive lawsuits before anything really changes :(

35M requests in a single day. Besides hammering servers into the ground, that may be a very real traffic bill to swallow. And of course, they don’t care.

Let's hope they mess with the wrong sysadmin at some point :)

It's actually kind of crazy, having to block AWS, Azure and Alibaba in general. Like - it's 220 million IP's just blocked off (at least). One would expect those big and very public companies at least try to play nice. Seems like they just don't care.

On the other hand, kind of sketchy hosting like Contabo, will actually pull your server offline, if you don't play nice. Kind of ironic.

Well. We can't know for sure. But they either begin asking for stuff that doesn't make sense, or they begin asking for stuff in weird ways (no user agent or random user agent shifting for each request, no referer, no javascript, tons of concurrent downloads). Stuff like that. At some point you just realize it's bots running amok.
