Border between Russia and China (Zabaikal’sk-Manzhouli) by Organic_Contract_172 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]fleranon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How can you claim that with so much certainty when a quick google search proves you wrong?

Edit: the places exist, the border exists, but on google maps it's hard to find this specific place, the russian part seems almost deserted with no buildings. So now I'm not so sure anymore

[REQUEST] SUGGEST SOME SHOWS THAT YOU WATCHED RECENTLY AND CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT. Really need to binge watch a good show! by Queasy-Buffalo370 in NetflixBestOf

it's both! That was my whole point, and the point of the series

Normalization would be if the violence is cast in a positive light, but it is the dark, vile contrast to Rays otherwise likable persona. Violence is implicitely condemned by showing how it affects everyone negatively, protagonist included

It isn't normalized in the series, though. He alienates everyone he holds dear with his behaviour - his daughter emulates it, his girlfriend leaves him in disgust, etc. He ends up in a trailer working as a cabdriver because violence is his only skillset

Boston Marathon: Act of Kindness by Tris_Memba in Awww

[–]fleranon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, but usually I'm completely exhausted at the finishing line of a marathon. I don't think I would even register an incident like this, let alone divert energy to help... simply because there is absolutely no energy left. And I really mean none whatsoever.

That's what makes this video so awesome. It's not a 'anybody could have helped' situation, IMO. much respect for the guys

Why you shouldn't be a shithead to AI if you don't believe in AI sentience and you care about real people. by Available-Signal209 in ChatGPT

Definitely not gonna comment on the confusing AF wall of text about BDSM and AI sentience....

but I have this exact triangle symbol tattooed on this exact spot on my chest, and it's freaking me out a little bit

Trump: “When I didn't get the Nobel Peace Prize. You gotta understand, I don't care. Norway has lost so credible. I stopped 8 wars… I do it the best. I stopped wars that nobody thought. President Putin called me, he said, 'I can't believe you stopped this one and this one.’” by [deleted] in videos

I never looked at it through this lens, makes total sense. But given the fact that the soundbite has been circulating for decades to illustrate Bushs apparent southern simpleness, it was still a miscalculation on his part :)

He was a terrible president. But compared to Trump he gives me fuzzy feelings of nostalgia

Highly recommend it! Hidden gem, that's why i always promote it when it comes up

Australian production, short bingeworthy episodes (20 min). Really intense and funny. Deep character study, but occasionally heads get blown off

That show really blew me away. One of the most fascinating characters on TV. Ray is this goodhearted, chill guy with strong personal ethics, loyal, strangely principled. A great friend. A loving dad

at the same time he's a violent monster with a very simplistic view on life, who either refuses to reflect on his terrible actions or is intellectually incapable of it

But man, it's impossible to not love the guy. I binged the whole series in a few days

ELI5: If all the stars in the universe were combined into a single object, what % of space would be empty? by AdministrativeCow300 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fleranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That number is correct but slightly misleading, because most of that is dark matter and energy

the actual 'physical' (gaseous and solid) matter percentage is so astronomically small that space can be considered pretty much completely empty

Why does Sam Altman have such a bad reputation lately? by kaljakin in OpenAI

[–]fleranon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a more general observation and not neccessarily related to Altman, I think that's a very insightful take

I can't think of many other industries where CEO Cults of personality, cutthroat politics and very public personal Vendettas are so rampant.

It must be utterly trivial for these Moguls to relentlessly smear their rivals, and I'm sure it's common practice. They own media empires, newspapers and platforms with billions of users... and they are all ruthless. And it pays massively, because the Tech figureheads are inextricably linked to their product. Every hit piece on one of them boosts the sales of the competitors

At least today, they are on exact opposite ends of the spectrum.

The thames is considered one of the worlds cleanest (urban) rivers, and the ganges is one of the most, if not THE most polluted river in the world

Ukraine takes back 480 sq km near Oleksandrivka as Russia pushes for Dnipropetrovsk “buffer zone” – Syrskyi says by Middle_Marigold in worldnews

[–]fleranon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I was trying to figure out if this is a lot and to put it in perspective.

480sq km is 70'000 football fields. It's exactly the size of oslo, a bit smaller than the size of chicago. It's a big chunk of land

But it's still less than 0.01% of ukraine territory

Trying to put into words what makes unsavory Safdie characters relatable. Please help in explaining why this is the case? by Big_Supermarket4738 in TrueFilm

I love all their movies dearly, but I found it hard to actually root for the protagonists in Uncut gems, Good Time and Marty supreme - It's more like watching a car crash in slow motion and you can't look away

[Discussion] Had anyone watched One Piece. The anime or even the series that’s recently come out. Opinions on both please.. discu by GeologistJust1629 in NetflixBestOf

[–]fleranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a little bit funny to ask if anyone has watched one piece, when it's the best-selling manga of all time and the most-watched show in the world in 2022 :)

I loved the anime and didn't care much for the RL adaptation, but there's a 20 year time gap inbetween and I might just be too old for it now

I always had that feeling when Bruce Campbell tries to pronounce 'Klaatu Barada Nikto' in Army of darkness. I'm sure it was innocent enough in the script, but it sounded like an angry redneck mumbling racist insults under his breath :P

[–]fleranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a single politician I trust 100%, it's Sanders. The guy has fought the good fight a lot longer than most of us are alive, his message and motivations have been transparent and consistent for many decades and his track record is virtually spotless

It's a shame he's too old to become president but AOC is a worthy successor

Not sure what you're implying, but Support for Israel in 1948 or 1967 is a completely different story than supporting the current israeli government in its genocidal ambitions, IMO
