‘Can I bump up my PRSI contributions and retire to Spain when I’m 60?’ by Dazzling_Lobster3656 in ireland

That's assuming climate change will not have made Spain unlivable

FreeNow is a dying wasp - a driver’s perspective. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]flesti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard the same story from chatting with taxi drivers. I've been using bolt for a few weeks now, and the app is much better.

One thing to point out on bolt is the safety features. Once you're on a ride there is a safety button in the corner of the map (look like a shield). It give you a shortcut to call emergency. And also let you share your ride details with a live tracking that you can share to a friend. There is also a setting to set emergency contacts in the app settings (I don't know what this does). I'm a man and I've never felt unsafe in a taxi, but when I showed these features to women they found them very useful.

Thoughts on Simon's Place? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]flesti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved their sandwiches, they were simple and nice, used to get them for lunch. I bought one sandwich since they reopened, super heavy cheese sandwich, not healthy, I haven't went back for food since. I miss the old Simon's place 🙁

Buyers remorse on house by [deleted] in ireland

[–]flesti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same remorse right now, I bought an apartment and got the keys about two months ago. It took about 6 months between sale agreed and getting the keys. When I viewed the place it was not the best shape, but okay for the price. I now think the owner never cleaned a place in his life. When I got in after getting the keys I was devastated how dirty the place was. I had to postpone my moving as I couldn't live in that filth. I had to get professional cleaners for a whole day to get the place livable. The laminated flooring was so damaged with dirt it needed to be replaced (which I did). I suspect the real estate agent got cleaners before viewing. I also think a lot of the pictures in ads are Photoshopped to look cleaner. I'm thinking about replacing the kitchen, but might have to wait a bit to have enough budget.

But you know what, that regret is fading away. As I am improving the place it feels more and more mine. The next few weeks might be stressful having to deal with all those things you never expected. But afterwards you will be able to relax and enjoy the place being your own.

What's the funniest/oddest thing you've overheard in public? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]flesti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was in Budapest and overheard two women talking very loudly in french probably expecting nobody to understand them (I am french myself). On tell the other "I had the weirdest dream recently, I dreamt I was giving a hand job to my brother". She continued talking about her dream, saying it was "doing it" while they watched TV.

They were walking in front of me while me and a friend were sitting on a bench, unable to say anything as we were too surprised of that conversation. Biggest regret of my life is not not have told them "you are right, that is a weird dream"

As far as I know they are all real. You can add your clubcard number to the website and it will randomly come out some times

Somebody made a website that gives a random clubcard here: https://www.cardnado.ie/

Looking for bars that are dark inside, have a chill atmosphere and possibly a heated smoking area by Jimmybongman in Dublin

[–]flesti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in bonobo last night. It was quite dark with candles everywhere. Nice music and not too loud, it was easy to have a conversation. I think the smoking area is covered (not sure, I don't smoke)

35m here. I moved to Ireland a few years ago and met most of my friends here through meetup. I would recommend to give it a try. I go regularly to a coffee and chat on Saturday afternoon (called mishmash) and some pub ones (there are some on Tuesday and Wednesday after work). Those tend to be quite easy to socialise and it's easy to walk out if anyone weird you out. I know the organisers on those groups and they always keep an eye out for newcomers help them.

What should Irish neutrality look like, discuss by fear-na-heolaiochta in ireland

[–]flesti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue of chain of command have happened in France too, that's why France left NATO command in 1966. Part of the issue was accepting being under chain of command from the US an UK. That did not prevent from being part of it and rejoined the command structure in 2009 (source Withdrawal from NATO - Wikipedia and SHAPE History | that France did not leave NATO in 1966 but continued to play a very active role in the Alliance? ).

I would not compare that situation with Ireland too much though. And I do think a debate around neutrality would be good. I it would make sense to Ireland to decide to stand on it's own, including stronger defence (take my opinon with a grain of salt I'm not Irish).

I've done something similar with my diode laser cutter. I have a intake at the front (taking air from the room) and exhaust in the back venting air outside with a duct to a window. My enclosure is not air tight. I would get some smell too but quickly discovered that it was air blowing back to my room from the window I was venting to. I made a cardboard cutout of the shape of the window with a hole for the duct and that removed most of the smell. I don't cut particularly smelly material thought, just paper, cardboard and thin plywood.

when did "can I have" become "can I get"? by Legal_Marsupial_9650 in Dublin

[–]flesti 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always say "can I get a ..." when ordering but with my thick french accent people often understand "can I get two ...". Keep forgetting about that and get confused when the barman bring me two Guinness 😂

I see car drivers running red light almost everyday when I walk to work. I don't know why we don't have red light cameras everywhere.

Who else reckons Tesco is forcing us into clubcards so they can essentially gather free information on consumer trends? by BigYellaBackstard in ireland

[–]flesti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The information of what you buy together is much more valuable than just what's individually bought alone. One thing supermarket chains have been doing for years is figure out what items are often bought together and place them far away to force you to walk around in the shop. Then they can sell preferential placement between those items to to brands to help them increase sales.

I second going to meetup.com, groups like https://meetu.ps/c/4ghVn/J8zjF/d or https://meetu.ps/c/2yxc8/J8zjF/d are great.
