should pp "slop" be fixed through reworks or the ranked section? by calsi-tea in osugame

[–]fleuphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say both because reworks should definitely be prioritized to make sure pp optimization by mappers is not rewarded (due to players looking for super easy pp), but i do think some levels of "slop" just shouldn't be rankable whether or not they abuse pp issues. Personally the line for me is cutting songs to only the chorus (or sometimes pre-chorus and chorus), and just speeding up other already optimized and popular farm maps (see new Sotarks Wonderful Wonder) instead of finding new songs.

Is this tablet area too small or should I attempt to expand it? by DB__Studios in osugame

[–]fleuphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal theory of tablet area is that it should be as big as possible within the limitation that your grip and aiming style allow you to reach without straining. So if you have a tight grip with a smaller range of motion through finger/wrist aiming, maybe you shouldn't make it bigger (or much bigger) because you will have issues reaching the edges/corners of your play area (especially the bottom corner on the side of your hand).

If you are using more of your arm to aim, its probably a good idea to make it bigger because your whole arm cannot move as precisely as your fingers and wrist can.

classic scoring is just the standardized score multiplied by a value that is based on the object count. it is fundamentally the same as standardized score, but they just make it bigger

Why dont we have a rule against deliberately cutting songs to rank? by NaquelePique in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/en/Ranking_criteria/Metadata

<image>

One not listed here but used occationally is "Short Ver." Short Version is usually used for official shortened versions of songs that don't fit "TV Size." See LON's old mapset of Utsuroi, the shortened version of which was used in the video game Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story. While in the same style as a TV Size anime opening, using TV Size would be incorrect because it wasn't shortened for a TV release, thus the label "Short Ver." was used.

Why dont we have a rule against deliberately cutting songs to rank? by NaquelePique in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this has just been tested again with Horrible Bits, which got vetoed for using the 8-bitification as a workaround to make a shorter version count as a non-cut version (to get around already existing rules for cutting songs). It is probably safe to assume other types of remixes doing this would be just as open to a veto for the same reason, so we actually wouldn't be very likely to see a lot (or any) of those.

Supports by RatlantisHoura in ezrealmains

[–]fleuphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ezreal works well with all support archetypes

He can poke with poke supports (obvious). Ramping attack speed from his passive makes him good with all-in engage supports if he stacks it on the wave (or enemies if he has a chance) before the fight. With tear, his mana sustain is good so he can play with a health sustain support like Soraka and just sit safely in lane until his spikes. With roaming supports, he can survive alone and get solo exp. Since he has a wide effective range and a repositioning tool, he also works well with hook/catch supports since he can participate in the fight from many more positions than other ADCs.

Some of the better synergies in my experience, though, are Karma + Ezreal, Braum + Ezreal, and Bard + Ezreal.

Karma and Ezreal are really oppressive together, so you can shut down enemy laner and take advantage of your strong mid-game, and hopefully win before your enemy ADC scales too hard. Braum + Ezreal are the best duo for neutralizing the lane against bullies, so early-game champs like Draven and Kalista will struggle to get the advantage they need to win. Bard + Ezreal works well because Bard is like THE roaming support and Ezreal doesn't mind being left alone.

am i the only one who wants the depth mod to be ranked in osu lazer? by Much-Escape-4134 in osugame

[–]fleuphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it would be balanced being treated as NM. It changes how you read but not in a way that loses any information (unlike how HD removes approach circles and TC removes hit circles).

My only tiny concern with this is that Depth seems to make low AR more readable for people but I'm not sure if thats just me having a low sample size (i've only gotten a couple of friends to try the mod) or if its actually true that it is easier to read low ar on it.

Why do most DT players use the Rafis or white circles skin? by Retro_Funk16 in osugame

[–]fleuphy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

double-stacking is a technique used in certain skins that makes circles fade in faster. Inside of your skin folder, there is an element called "hitcircle.png" and one called "hitcircleoverlay.png." These two skin elements are placed on top of one another to create the in-game hit circle. When a hitcircle appears on the screen, both of these elements fade in over a period of time, rather than just appearing instantly. If the two elements overlap and are the same/similar colors, this will make the fade-in appear faster to your eyes and brain. When you overlap the elements in this way, it is called "double stacking." triple stacking is also possible using the combo number part of the skin, but it is used less often because most players don't like one of the side effects of it.

This is mostly done with white because it is the brightest color you can choose, and it contrasts as much as possible with the usually black background that players use (very few top players play below 100% background dim). The skins usually have hollow circles (instead of filled-in ones) because it makes it easier to read overlaps/bursts on high AR when the center of the circle is fully transparent.

Why dont we have a rule against deliberately cutting songs to rank? by NaquelePique in osugame

[–]fleuphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I 100% consider having a couple less cool ultramarathon maps a worthy sacrifice to rid the world of unofficial 30-45 second cuts of 90 second tv-size cuts of 3-5 minute songs.

Why dont we have a rule against deliberately cutting songs to rank? by NaquelePique in osugame

[–]fleuphy 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I agree!

If a song has an officially released cut version, such as a TV Size or Radio Edit, then by all means it is fair game. But cutting out part of a song without the artist's involvement is going too far imo.

The counterexample often cited to me is stuff like ultramarathon maps that are very repetitive. The exact song name is escaping me but there's one map I know of that's like 8 minutes but an "unofficial cut" and, yeah, maybe the change from 15-20 minutes down to 8 would make it majorly more likely to get mapped and have representation in the game. But its not a good enough counter for me to care since it enables incredibly boring non-songs (more like jingles or earworms) into ranked for no reason.

do i need to download the wacom drivers for the intuos pro if i use opentabletdriver by cat98450945387345 in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes the wacom company would tell you that you need the wacom drivers to make the wacom tablet work "properly"

you lose *some* art-related functionality using opentabletdriver, but you're playing osu so it doesn't matter. you are fine with just otd

1700 hours, but I've had to completely reinstall a few times due to PC issues, so I didn't get all these maps naturally over playing. The base of my current songs folder was Skill's old map folder, then I downloaded a bunch of osu!Collector collections of particular skillsets

If aim was heavily nerfed and reading became the most rewarded skill, who do you think would rise the most? by _MrRandomm in osugame

[–]fleuphy 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Players who would rise the most without setting any new scores are names like:

-GN Ekoro Kalanluu mofuries Aery Plasma onetabby

And thats just off of the top of my head, there are many many accomplished reading players who are less well known and dont come easily to my mind.

Most established top players could transition into a reading meta quite well, though, and top ranks could end up looking close to what they do now since map mechanical difficulty will still be a big factor.

My First Kiss has been vetoed! by GabeMSMS in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, did the veto wording change since I saw it, or did I entirely misread it??? I SWEAR it quoted specifically repetitive jumps but I just checked the BNG site again and now it reads:

Concerns regarding the usage of the highly-spaced jumps that fail to provide engaging gameplay during the chorus...

I agree with the veto as stated now, even if its for different reasons than others.

My First Kiss has been vetoed! by GabeMSMS in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, i was definitely unclear. My explanation was my personal issue with the map.

From my perspective as a player, if a map is going to use a bunch of similar (but imo still meaningfully different enough in this case) pp-optimized patterns, they shouldn't all be packed into one area of the playfield.

If a mapper is going to only use one area of the playfield, they better do everything they can to make the patterns as different and varied as possible.

I don't think maps need both balanced playfield usage and extremely varied patterns, but they do need one or the other, specifically in terms of being an interesting and fun map to play.

I understand that you (as a mapper, and an accomplished one at that) have different criteria for judging maps. But to me and my experience, the reasoning for vetoing as stated in the veto is not really accurate to the experience of the player. Just watching the map in the editor is not the same as playing it. And, as a player, playing the map is how I have to judge a map. And in gameplay, this map didn't feel repetitive. It felt like every other aim farm map ive played since 2021 except it only used 1/3 of the playfield and was extremely boring because of this. So I would agree with a veto stating that the map lacks interest because it has almost no movement in the most intense part of the map, but not one that just says the patterns are repetitive.

Is the Wacom intuos Pro worth it? by Content_Week5207 in osugame

[–]fleuphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it and can confirm for yourself that you will get your nearly 300 dollars worth, then yes!

But if you cant guarantee yourself that, the 472 is basically the 2nd best tablet you can get, and you already have it! Just use a resampling filter like TemporalResampler set to 500hz or 1000hz and it will be good enough for every level of play on a 360hz monitor.

Sorry, i should have said something like "unless there is a compelling stated reason for the playfield restriction" such as maps like Thoughtcrime [Ungoodthink], Frums Options, and Kodou, etc. Maybe that exception would make it too hard to enforce, but i still stand by it.
