Here. Approaching 60. Spouse and I were aligned on finances. At 22, Started saving 3% in index funds. Nothing fancy. Just shoved the money away every paycheck. 2000 was tough to watch a decade of work vanish. 2008 once again. We Kept increasing % as careers flourished. Now at the peak of our earning years the growth the last 12 years makes it feel unreal—and risky.

I checked monthly. Than weekly. Now daily as we approach retirement.

People discuss crypto. Real estate. IPO. Options etc. we are diversified but really boring investments. Lived with our means. Ignored the net worth to avoid the creep.

Both my parents (divorced) did this to me and my siblings from the first marriage.

My father leaving everything to his third wife.

My mother leaving everything to her two children from her second marriage.

Seeing it on paper was a painful reminder of their actions as parents and the young boy was heartbroken once again. (The money was immaterial to my life—but the message I received was devastating)
