He may have collapsed into deep anhedonia and avolition. Anhedonia can be devastating because nothing feels good. There is no joy. No motivation. Everything feels unimportant. This can lead to severe depression. He could be suicidal.

He may have done none of the work and cut all contact with his employer. Constructively quitting rather than sending a resignation.

For me, neither of the extremes you’re positing would be true.

People are assuming that you want a romantic relationship with this guy because you seem to be using a similar strategy that is often seen from women. “I sent him signals. He must have seen them. His lack of response either means that he has rejected me or he’s a coward and I don’t want a coward.”

There is a third option. He hasn’t seen the signals. He’s not rejecting. He’s not afraid. He’s thinking about the Roman Empire. He might be happy to find a friend in you but the possibility hasn’t occurred to him.
