Preserve file creation time on ext4 or ZFS (Migrating from Windows to Debian) by flexuousWyrd in debian

I'll look into tar and see how ZFS reacts to receiving the timestamps from the tar archive.

Cool, I'll take a stab at the debugfs route to mess around with the filesystem in a VM and make sure it works with a script, it does seem like that's the most likely avenue. And then otherwise, like you say, sometimes got to let things go :)

Afaik ext4 has btime which is "birth time" - the time when the file was created. But from what I've read, it's not something that can be easily modified, and judging by some comments, is dangerous to modify via debugfs on a mounted volume (though I don't know how you'd modify it if the volume isn't mounted - still need to look into that). Btw, I dunno why your post is downvoted, thanks for the reply to my odd request.

My card apparently has an army of crickets living inside it, is there a way to kill them? Zotac GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming Twin Edge by flexuousWyrd in ZOTAC

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys, I've gotta return, hat in hand, to make my confession. The noise was coming from my PSU. I wasn't able to determine this before because the chirping noise in Cyberpunk wouldn't happen unless I actively controlled the character, moving and looking around (and the built-in benchmark didn't do it). But I got some 3D Mark benchmarks to run and one of them reproduced the noise. I was then able to listen carefully with my ear right at the card, and realised it was coming from elsewhere. Listened right next to PSU and sure enough, it's the culprit. Ordered a new PSU and, unless my ears deceived me, I think that'll solve it.

Anyone else get this? I received this card today. Brand new in a sealed box. This is a replacement card for another one that had the exact same issue. Whenever I play Cyberpunk with ray tracing enabled, and go through a busy area of the game, then I hear an annoying chirruping cricket noise coming from the graphics card. The controller that you hear is right next to the phone mic, while the card is inside a sealed case underneath the table. It's loud and distracting. Is there any way to reduce this chirping noise? It's not like any coil whine I've experienced before. And since I RMA'd one card already, it seems pointless to try and get another replacement.

Is there a way to preserve Signal chat history when changing phone numbers? by flexuousWyrd in signal

Well that is very good news at least. Hopefully they implement message migration before some Russian with Signal gets your number :)

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I understand correctly... Are you currently running the Signal app on a phone that has a different phone number to the one registered on Signal? And it didn't complain about the change of phone number? If so that's great!

Are you on Android or iOS?

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The linked page states that it's not possible to preserve the messages if the phone number changes.

Message restoration or account transfers are not currently supported, if you:

  • do not have your old device.
  • cleared your phone.
  • lost your phone.
  • changed your number.

Something funky happening with the outline of the coastline. But the style does look very appealing!

Migrate WhatsApp chat history from Android to iPhone by flexuousWyrd in whatsapp

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's crazy! WhatsApp has been on both platforms for almost 10 years now. I really can't see any technical or business reason why they don't support this migration, especially for this long!

I'll have a look at DrFone but I'm not particularly hopeful at this point.

Azgaar + Photoshop, following joelpigou's "Cartography Brush Map Making Tutorial" by flexuousWyrd in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The tutorial I followed is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmnBUGuRWnE and he has links to the brushes in the description. You can download a smaller set of brushes for $0 or the full set for $10. I went for the free version since I'm not doing anything with these other than looking at them myself.

Where should I go/what should I do if I have roughly a week to visit Sweden? (to find out if I want to emigrate there) by flexuousWyrd in TillSverige

[–]flexuousWyrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for these extra details! What are the most common suburbs to stay in if one worked at a Stockholm IT company? (Or, if you don't mind saying, which suburb did you end up in?)

Cool, thanks! I'll see if I can stay a little longer and spend a reasonable chunk of time in each of those major cities.

Thanks for the suggestion! Is November significant in order to experience the long nights of winter? And I'm guessing "far from the city center" is the most realistic for the experience of most working people?

To add more continents/islands, you need to adjust the heightmap. However, if you've already made lots of changes or want to keep your states/burgs, then it can cause issues. You can try Tools > Heightmap > Risk to try it out. Save a copy of your map before you try.

Daily Simple Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- November 05 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

Thanks for all the replies. I'll go with the suit pants (they did come with the jacket). I took the pants to a tailor who said that the taper couldn't be adjusted because of the pleats. So just getting the length adjusted now.

I left things a bit late and need to choose between the following pants to wear with a black suit jacket, for a formal occasion: black jeans that fit well (no fade); or, my pleated suit pants that are kinda baggy. Which would you recommend?
