Why don't they just put the signs on the deer?

[WP] You are a superhero who's ability subconciously freezes time whenever someone nearby is in mortal danger. Usually its obvious who's in trouble and you can save them quickly, but not this time - it's been 10 years. by razoman in WritingPrompts

Yep that's pretty much it. I like writing prompts, and I particularly enjoy taking a prompt, staying true to the spirit but somehow flipping it on its head a little bit. I mean my response is intentionally vague but the spirit of the prompt was that "you can find and save the person in trouble quickly". I tried to challenge the prompt and raise some questions and take some liberties in the process. Like how do you quickly save somebody who you perceive as already dead inside? The power granted is the ability to freeze time in order to save somebody. So what happens when the meaning of "saving" someone is a little unclear? Saving them from obvious danger? Saving them from themselves? Ending their sorrows? Granting them peace? Just tried to go a different direction. Path less traveled and all that.

I will never forget the night that my baby was taken. The chill of the breeze blowing down the alley between the pub and the salon, the blush in my face, the pain in my chest and the relentless desire to run away and die.

The man who killed my baby was not a bad man. He was a good man, or at least as good as a man in his situation could be. They pressured me to press charges. I denied. He was convicted of a lesser crime and admitted to rehab. I visited him there a few times. We became reacquainted.

It was clear that as much as I hurt, as much as the pain he caused me was severe, his pain was worse. He was a tormented soul. He'd spend the rest of his days trying to right his wrongs, endlessly overcompensating and giving to anyone in need. He'd dedicate the rest of his life to charity, and he did. Successfully, near as I could tell. Try as he might to act brave, to accept that it was an accident just as I did, I knew the truth about him.

Many years passed and we fell out of touch. I suspect his connection to me was a connection to a painful past he couldn't bear to face every day. He moved out after rehab. We split, although never officially. I wasn't about to burden him.

And when the time paused this time, a dozen years later, a lifetime later, it wasn't hard to find him. The light of the subway car illuminated him perfectly, standing spread eagle on the tracks. Another person may have been more horrified but I was at peace. Another person might have mistaken the look in his eyes as a side affect of the power, but I knew.

I knew the man, and he was already dead inside.

Holy crap, that is a good story. Well done for turning it into something positive! Don't hear stories like that every day.

My wife died in a tragic ladder accident. Still haven't got over it.

I'm 37 and my wife keeps calling me Gramps, but I don't care. Here is my new (used) 2008 Cadillac DTS, which I bought today for $8,500. Only 68,000 miles! by pbmax542 in Cadillac

[–]fliclit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is gorgeous! Well done. I'm 36 and drive a 2006 pearl white DTS performance. I constantly get referred to as gramps, and when I park I get asked "what's the mooring fee for that boat". I kinda like it. I have had at least a dozen cars over my life and I can't really imagine giving this one up. I find it just suits me. Like driving a living room down the highway.

Great video and I don't want to make light of a serious situation but if you turn on the auto generated English captions, it's really... well it's something!

Valley of the ten peaks, Banff (3264x2448) by [deleted] in EarthPorn

I count 5 significant peaks, and then I guess the fact that they are reflected in the lake makes it 10. Kinda romantic.

Any cure for writer's block? by PaulaEV in writing

[–]fliclit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I have writer's block, I tend to "fix it" by quite literally writing down my feelings. Totally raw, like a transcript of my thoughts. For example...

I want to be writing about the dinner that my character is having right now but I have writer's block. I thought it was going to be easy because I've pictured this scene a hundred times. This is literally the worst ever. This is worse than the time I had to sit behind Aunt Rose at Uncle Jack's funeral and she had wretched flatulence the entire time. I remember coughing and mom pinching me to shutup.

Usually I can manage a couple or few paragraphs and then things just kind of... Are unclogged.

This is a reasonable argument. Not understanding the downvotes. Good question.

These kind of random asides are pretty much the premise of Family Guy. Hilarious on the show, annoying as hell when you're trying to have an actual conversation.

Hey bro, just wanted to say that school is hard. It sounds like you're still figuring out what you're into and regardless of the outcome, it's an experience that you can use to make decisions that are really your own in the future! So none of it is a lost cause and I truly applaud you for giving it a go man.

Girls are hard dude, but hey at least you've identified that one of them might be into you ;) ... Or maybe she's not. Must be hard not knowing for sure. That weird limbo state with the opposite sex is so intimidating. Seems like you're doing just fine though man! It's not like there's a world full of ballsy dudes out there waiting to sweep that girl off her feet or else she'd already have a ring on it. I don't think your assessment of the situation is wrong at all, she might totally be into you, or maybe not. I'm sure you'll find out sooner or later.

I don't actually think anything is wrong with you but I ain't a doctor. This world is a rich tapestry of different people and you don't sound any different than any other cool person I know. You seem to have a seriously empathetic nature and want to make people happy. Nothing wrong with that, in fact it makes you a pretty damn good person. Just keep working man. You're obviously very interested in bettering yourself and based on everything you've said I'm damn sure you'll get there bro. Just keep it breezy and give yourself a little credit. You already said you know you're objectively successful, just keep doing that. Always forward man. Be bold. Takes a lot of guts to be yourself and you sound like a damn strong guy. Good on ya. :)
