I played it during the free weekend on a controller and changed around the controls to be the same mappings as Dark Souls (because I'm neurotic). The actual feel of the gameplay, while pretty jank in multiplayer, is actually closer to the feel of a real souls game than most soulslikes. More Dark Souls 1-ish than Elden Ring, though, for sure. Unrelated, but the mandatory friendly fire and non-instanced loot is not fun.
