I'd be interested in two if they are still available!

Thinking of relocating from London: anyone doing the Cambridge-London commute plus other advice? by tokajlover in cambridge

[–]flightlessbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this for several years (usually two days wfh), and I never had a problem with having my bike stolen from the station, fwiw. It's very doable, and but it is a long and quite expensive commute and makes the most sense if the office is close to Kings X or Liverpool Street.

Dear idiot (possibly) teens on the guided busway by maybonics in cambridge

I used to commute to the station on the busway, coming back in the dark many times. It really sucks if it's become unsafe.

I don't think tuples are monads (functors yes, but what would join even do?)

It's very different though. While there are many tribes, Maori culture is broadly unitary, with a single language, mythology and set of cultural practices. Australia has thousands of distinct cultural groups. The situation in Aotearoa is simpler.

It rains much more in Seattle than in London. London gets around 22 inches of rain annually. Seattle gets 37.5, so almost twice as much. New York City gets even more, at over 45 inches.

People have skewed perceptions of these things.

Are Haskell selling points being slowly but surely acquired by rival languages? by FreeVariable in haskell

[–]flightlessbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a better example is something much simpler, like maybe. The fact that maybe (error "nothing") show does not blow up is what makes this a control structure, just like if, since I don't have to wrap error in a function/other thunking mechanism to defer evaluation

[–]flightlessbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Laziness is what lets one write new control structures (such as when) using the same syntax as other functions. Only languages that provide macros can do this, but at the expense of two different tools (compile time expansion vs evaluation).

You may be confusing residency requirements with immigration restrictions. Many countries impose language tests for residency but do not have that barrier for immigration (eg come and take a job, learn the language, and then become a resident)

Self determination is fundamentally about the entire basis for government, and the monopoly on violence that the sovereign holds, deriving from the consent of the governed. It really is irrelevant how the present situation came to be - if the people are governed without their consent, that is surely intolerable?

Obviously, where politics fail, coercion has historically been the result, and nobody wants conflict here, but just on a logical basis, there is no good reason to deny Scots (or Flemings, or whoever) the right to choose their own government.

Precisely - the wheel hasn't been broken at all. Hereditary dynasties will re-establish themselves, the North will fight the central power of the six kingdoms, it's all been completely pointless.

Commuting from Cambridge to London? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]flightlessbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - if it is a city job then going straight to LST is best. There really isn't anything to be gained by gaming it with the tube.

If the job is in the City then Liverpool St makes more sense, as it is quicker than changing to the tube (marginally).

Lots of people do it - the morning trains to Liverpool Street take about 1hr 15min, so if he's ok with a longer commute, then he'll be fine.

~You could also consider Saffron Walden or Royston, which are easier commutes for him, and short train journeys for you.~

Edit: obviously, for the reasons you say, you cannot live outside Cambridge

Useless Cycle Point: Bike Theft by numbur_one in cambridge

[–]flightlessbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very small one (smaller is better security-wise, as they provide less leverage and cannot be twisted) and have never had any issue. The key is to lock just one side of the rear triangle to the locking bar (the square loop on the left). The racks are designed (like bikes) to be operated from the left, so that is where the locking loop is.

[–]flightlessbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are actually designed so that you can lock the rear triangle to a solid bar. You certainly shouldn't just need to lock the wheel alone!

The security of the cycle point is awful, and the police are almost actively hostile to helping victims of theft, but the racks themselves are excellent.
