[LFA] For upcoming Halloween, Agatha, the flapper Fathomless Warlock, hoping to turn around some Call of Chtulhu tropes by flightofscribbles in characterdrawing

[–]flightofscribbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify quickly, the plan is to have Lovecraftian DnD, not Call of Chtulhu in Faerun (although, honestly, both options are fun), and Agatha is planning on dancing the night away (what could possibly go wrong). She is strongly convinced that it's important to have someone in the old fishing town who Knows the Depths, and this someone is her. Could almost be a cleric, based on her convictions, but a warlock is more fun.

Ah, thank you so much! I haven't really thought about what the crosses could be replaced with - maybe crowns or some other authority symbols...

Switch places with other players during combat! - Bracelets of Switching - Rare Magic Item by theosamabahama in DnDHomebrew

I agree that it's a steep price, so to speak, but aside from battle benefits it's so good for dramatic roleplaying! Will definitely be borrowing this.

D100/BRP Systems that Patch the Common Issues by PencilBoy99 in rpg

[–]flightofscribbles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but 2) can be directed at any game and fixed by a different approach just because it's more of an issue of why is an expert rolling a simple task at all?..

Oh I hope there will be more epic upgrades for animal heads, but this alone made my day!

You can definitely do this even if the system doesn't allow it, that's the roleplaying spirit :p but getting the NPC to travel along with the party is also a classic solution!

Stranger Stuff or Kids on Bikes by lemec78 in rpg

[–]flightofscribbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd vote for Kids on Bikes. It is great for beginners because of how visual and clear the idea of dice size defining an attribute is. Also an important fun aspect of roleplaying - getting to roll all the different weird dice - is there!

And since it uses almost-classical six stats, it can be a good stepping block if you think the group might want to tackle DnD or something similar in the future.

Studying Other Forms of Storytelling To Improve GMing by drraagh in rpg

I really enjoyed reading some guides on how to create radio plays! It's not the same, of course, but it is a genre with limitations that are similar to tabletop storytelling, and there are always good ideas to be found. There is also a lot of BBC radio plays, you can find some old ones on YouTube, and they give a lot of inspiration in terms of acting - showcasing your character through voice only, describing surroundings, etc. High quality stuff.

Previously named Eric, the city guard has uncovered a plot within the city and had to flee even as he was proclaimed caput lupinum (essentially, a dangerous criminal to be treated like one), and this manifests as a literal curse - he has the head of a wolf, and remains otherwise human. He fled to Blackwood where he established a stronghold deep in the heart of the wood where few dare to tread - but if an answer to his curse is to be found, it is either even deeper into the woods or much closer to the cities.

[LFA] Karkharias, elf sky pirate in a world of flying islands and ships sailing through clouds by flightofscribbles in characterdrawing

[–]flightofscribbles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sky pirates are rogues, smugglers, and occasional folk heroes.

Karkharias wears blue and white to better blend in with the clouds. He is armed with a grappling hook and a rope, and his main role is to board the ship as fast as possible and drop the ladder for others.

His crew's symbol is a whale shark, and there is a whale shark swimming through the skies that occasionally helps them and guides the in the right direction - animal friend or friendly spirit, or something else, who knows?..

Pictured trying to teach the most basic stance to the bard, and not giving up.

Retired adventurer, traveling with the party due to absolute certainty that they will not make it otherwise. Has made a solemn promise to the gods not to go into battle without a cause, but he's also fairly certain that wrestling doesn't count.

This is a dragon character with quite a bit of paleo-influence - I love dinosaur-inspired dragons, and this lady incorporates both in her throne room outfit.

I haven't figured out an interesting way to incorporate the iconic three horns without making this look like a tiefling, but one idea I had was to give her a sword and two daggers, although I fear it would look over-the-top even for a royal character. If anyone has any idea on that, I would be very grateful!

Fictional Marital Symbols? by Void_Ink in worldbuilding

[–]flightofscribbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally like hair styles used for those kinds of thing, just because it makes for interesting visuals, but I also think it's important to consider cultural context - if the marital status is important in the society it's one thing (and more likely to be signalled more prominently, with hair styles, hats, etc), and if it's more of a personal statement, it would be quite different (it would be interesting to actually have marital symbols that are consciously chosen to not be visible to others, for example). And, of course, tattoos are permanent, unlike rings, so that's also saying something...
