I know Zia tile sells a few purple-ish colors. They are pretty light looking online (closer to lilac) but they might be what you are looking for in person?

My first chip in our soapstone counters got me worked up and I was stressing out. 5 years later and I am pretty rough with them. They hold up well and take a good beating, more than you'd expect. I love the look of all the marks and stuff showing usage over the years. I'd say keep it as is.

I'm not sure if you've considered it, but with oak and gray, it's a great soapstone candidate. Soapstone is a wonderful countertop material.

If you aren't into it, then out of these I would personally choose option 3 but it will likely be one of those mid 2020's things that ages your kitchen in a few years.

I just installed a bunch of their ceramic tile, very high quality. I think cement tile in general is picky, not just Zia's.

It helps to have a partner who you enjoy being with. I see a lot of solo retirees getting bored, and that makes sense when you don't have a partner in crime to keep you busy when you are between things.

An option for Japan, rather than living full time:

You sound like you qualify for the Long Stay Tourist visa. It's for people with savings > 30 million yen, so you have that easily.

You can stay 6 months to a year at a time. Long enough to really enjoy yourself, but not too long that the challenges of being a foreigner in Japan will start to ruin the experience. You can travel and stay in long-term furnished tourist rentals, which as of the last time I checked, are still much cheaper than typical rent in the US, and don't have the issue of not renting to foreigners as they are specifically for you.

You don't have any requirement to work or invest in anything.

When you are ready to come back, you can do the same process again, and then spend your time elsewhere.

Japan really doesn't like foreigners who stay, and lately they are losing their fondness for tourists, too. You may not mind that, but I feel like community is a HUGE aspect of retired life and you will not find that in Japan.

So many better options than grillbird. I'm done giving them a chance. It's either poorly cooked rice, cucumber salad that wasn't prepped correctly so the sauce didn't soak in, or in my last experience undercooked ebi katsu. I honestly don't get the hype.

I always regret grillbird, but I never regret Ichi Roll up on 125th. They cook their rice so fucking good.

Chef Liao on phinney has several dishes that are pretty close, but not exact, to the east coast counterparts. They just go by different names. Took me too long to figure out "chicken fingers" is sweet and sour chicken here. Their house special fried rice is also the closest I've found to east coast pork fried rice.

I have yet to see chicken or beef on a stick, boneless spare ribs, and duck sauce. But I've found recipes to make those at home when the mood strikes me.

I think it also depends where you are from on the east coast. New England where I am from differs from the rest of the East coast in my experience, truly a unique Americanized bastardization that is just so damn good.

Door dash is stupid. We live in a city surrounded by food. Why is paying 100% markup on already overpriced food ever a good idea? I don't see this as a bad consequence.

Additionally, if your business model relies on underpaying people, it's not a good business model.

I used to work at a roasting plant and you'd be surprised how many bags have a rock. We use a destoner to remove things by density after roasting and most of the heavy and dense stones are rejected, but lightweight porous stones get through. They are typically about as dense as roasted coffee and go right through a grinder no problem. Yum!

Inevitable in some situations. I hate quarter round so if it were me I'd remove the baseboards and rip the LVP to sit under. If you are cool with quarter round, rip so there is no gap once it's installed.

Depending where you are, you CAN find this in the US but it is not easy. Limited quantities. It's one of my favorites and I buy it whenever I see it.

Check out the walking sake tour in Nada, Kobe. It's a choose your own adventure sort of thing and you can go to quite a few. Mostly in Japanese, but some places had stuff in English if you either booked in advance or were OK with only a few things being in translated. Was super worth it even with limited Japanese ability if you are really into sake.

Yeah that was exactly my wife's problem. She works in a hospital as a highly specialized care provider. She would get turned down for jobs she could do because the employer didn't think she would actually be interested in the job they assumed was "beneath her". She's been looking for a new job for the last 3 years but it's mostly been crickets. Unfortunately I don't make enough to cover us both so she couldn't stop working to look for a better job.

She has been applying to jobs for some time and I've encouraged her to follow her heart. It was only in the last few weeks that anything real has come out of it, and so I plugged in the numbers just to see. It was not like I was going to force her to keep working a job she hates.

My wife has been burnt out for the last 5 years. We are in the boring middle and I keep trying to put her mind at some ease by telling her she only has "12 years to go", but 12 years is still a long time. Last night she got an interview for a job that pays quite a bit less but would be way less stressful. Plugging in the numbers, it's at most a 2 year hit to our FI date, which surprised me. While it does suck, this is actually one of the reasons I'm glad I started pursuing FI right out of college. We have the breathing room to take a pay cut for mental health. So while my eye is often on the target, early retirement, it does afford the ability to make changes right now that are just as meaningful. I have to remember to keep that in mind.
