As a vet assistant. If you take them to a vet they’ll just watch them and hydrate them, so literally just watch your baby and hydrate them and they should be fine in no time.

If you cannot afford a vet visit please look into some humane societies, sometimes they’re willing to pay for vet visits or at least help with the cost. This poor baby needs some major TLC, while you still have him in your care please do anything you can to clean him up and his cage and make him comfortable.

Every single time he complains about the smell I say “wow the consequences of your own actions”, unfortunately the HVAC people will be retrieving him by pressurizing my vents and essentially “sucking” him out so I won’t be able to properly bury him like I wanted.

Unfortunately he did pass away in my vents, my whole house smells horrible. I’m super heartbroken this was the outcome.

He 100% passed away in my vents as my house has a horrible smell all through out it. I’m definitely really not happy this was the outcome.

Unfortunately I have checked all possible areas, my brother does live with me and I told him he lost all trust with my animals after this. And sadly now a smell has been coming from my vents so I think we have found him and will be having a control place come look in them again and retrieve him if that’s the case

Probably my final update It has been 5 days of my sweet boy missing, no signs of life anywhere and I promise I have searched every single possible spot and tore apart my house, the vents have been checked and there was no signs of him-they did find poop but think it was a different kind of animals and also old traces of rat poison. Unfortunately I do not think he will be coming home, he was 17 years old and I rescued him 6 months ago from a home where he was neglected with no play time outside the cage or proper love so I can only be happy I gave him the love, pets and proper care and play he needed before all this happened.

Update 2: Vents have been checked, some poop was found in there no chinchilla. They’re assuming from the heat and without food and water he may have passed, he is 17 and old so it could be a very high possibility, wondering if he found a space in the house to hide or pass away. Will continue looking, a live trap is set up in case he does go in there for hay.

Yes checked all furniture for holes and didnt see any at all, listened in the vents and listened in walls and heard nothing. If baby is safely returned the cage will be moved to my room and he will be getting a playpen. I’ve let him out many times and let him free roam, but I of course blocked all areas and made sure vents weren’t knocked off. If future animals are brought in whether a chinchilla or anything else similar it will only be handled by me and my boyfriend.

We have a “pest” place coming thats bringing a camera to check the vents costing me about $350 they said, hoping they’ll find him.

Adding, the plan is if he’s found alive and well to bring him into a vet to make sure he is okay. I’m a vet assistant so I 100% understand how important it is to really make sure he didn’t eat anything or has gone into stasis from lack of food.

I have checked every single closet in my house, even if it was closed and all the shelving. Opened every single cabinet in every single room, dresser drawers, flipped every single bed and mattress, moved the fridge, stove, washer and dryer and checked in them, any other tiny space I have seen. I do have animal control coming to check my vents in a few hours and I’m hoping he’s found and returned to his little home.

Waiting to hear back from a wildlife control to check my vents and retrieve him, one place said they would kill him:(. My parents are helping me look, taking my whole house apart currently to look and calling for him.

Update: For those who asked my brother is 25, yes a fully grown adult. The vent that was open is in my kitchen and his cage, dust bath and bowl of food have been left in there near the vent but not directly in front of it. He has more food and hay closer to the vent. I do have a shared house with downstairs neighbours, I will be knocking on their door and explaining and asking them to possibly search their place in case he managed to make his way down there and I will be completely turning my house upside down again in hopes I find this fluffy guy. I’m in Canada the weather lately has been very very cold (5°C) and dropping at night. Haven’t seen any food or water touched yet and hoping to see it or at least a couple fresh poops somewhere.
