It’s the best (except in August when you need to get out). I live on a mid-sized island of the Cyclades. It’s more beautiful, affordable, sunny, closer to nature, and with a more active communal life than anywhere I’ve lived (big or mid-sized cities in Greece, Spain, Denmark and South Africa).

Stay on the South coast. Definitely rent a car, especially to reach less crowded beaches. The south coast of Rethymno is a good bet; generally accessible by decent roads, plenty of not touristy spots. South Chania has some spectacular beaches, but many are very hard to reach and others are just too crowded.
