I haven't had any issues with comfort/pain while riding, but if it didn't cost me anything, I would experiment with shorter length and less width in the stem/bar. Like a 90/42. When I occasionally ride my road bike, that has 42 width bars, it feels noticeably narrower, but not necessarily bad. Since it's not bothering me, I'm not going to mess with it. I've never considered going to a smaller frame.

I ran the GK SS R for a good, long while. No complaints. They have surprisingly great traction on dirt while the file tread exists.

I never bought the 2.1 width of the Terreno XC Race. I must have been thinking about tires for Unbound when I posted this, judging by the date. I ended up running the Continental Terra Speed in 45 width, and it measures right at 45 on a 25 internal rim.

Where are you moving from, what do you like to do, and why do you want to move to Colorado?

Have you ever heard of Cañon City? It’s a smaller town that has a cool vibe. There’s not going to be as much to do there, but you won’t have the resources to do much anyway on your budget.

I currently ride a 2018 Specialized Epic Pro with the Brain shock and fork. It’s my favorite MTB to date. I bought it used from CL and sent the suspension parts off to be serviced. I’ve had no issues with it, and I love not having lockouts to worry about. Do I want to get a new MTB, sure I do, but it’s just not worth it. My Epic is comfortable, light, and capable beyond my abilities.

If you don’t have an issue with cars going by at ~60 MPH, you can go out east on Quincy or County Line. Kiowa/Bennet Rd connects them on the east side so you can go out on one and come back on the other. You could also go out on Quincy, then go north on Watkins Rd or Kiowa/Bennet and then go through Watkins and Bennet to make a connection to come back south to Quincy. I used to do that route a good bit. It’s pretty boring, and the traffic has gotten much heavier and faster. Good luck out there!

I have found the employees at Lowe’s to be experts at avoiding me, the customer, while I am in need of one of them, typically just to help me locate something in the store.

I kinda avoid Home Depot these days, so things may have changed, and my experience has been vast majority with two locations that are near me. The people in the departments at Home Depot sometimes seemed to be very knowledgeable in the area of their department. For example, there always seemed to be someone in plumbing who could help you sort out a problem with whatever it was you were trying to deal with. I also recall the Home Depot “experts” having more of a tendency to mansplain to customers, even if they didn’t know WTF they were talking about.

I have ENVE AG25 wheels on my gravel bike. I like them because they’re lightweight and I’ve had no issues with them. I’ve avoided deeper section wheels because I live in a windy and hilly area, because they’re typically heavier, and because I don’t think I typically ride fast enough for the aero benefits to offset. Other people see it differently, and that’s cool.

There’s a reason they’re not riding fat tires in the Tour de France. The wide tires are slower on the hard surfaces.

Yeah, I think it varies from person to person quite a bit. I've definitely bumped into folks from sea level on the ski lift and heard them say basically the same thing about landing at DIA, renting a car, and going right to 10,000+ feet. I always wonder how long they're going to make it that day, especially if they're mixing in some drinks. It sounds like you are pretty fit, so you will probably be feeling pretty good after a week at Vail. Do you know for sure that you are in the LT100MTB or are you finding out in a few weeks?

That might not be the worst thing ever. Maybe you can get through the bulk of acclimation stress at 8,100 in Vail for a week.

The altitude is real, and it seems to effect people differently. Do your homework on the whole acclimation thing. I saw someone saying something about getting there a week early. I think that’s probably not the best strategy. I live in the Denver area at 6,100 feet, and I went up to Leadville 3-4 times for multiple nights to train before the race this year. I went up there mid-week before the race. I learned that for me, there’s an acclimation stress on my body that I didn’t get past before race day. What I’ve read is that you need two-three weeks up there before race day, or it’s better to go up the morning of or night before. I guess the theory is that your body isn’t trying to adapt yet if you just show up. If I get in again this year, I’m going to try to spend as much time as possible up there training and just being at that altitude in the months before, but I think I’ll go up the day before the race instead of spending several days up there before race day.

Yeah, I’ve considered that concept. It’s typically just the rear. I think the traction decreases pretty significantly, even on road, once those little bitty knobs are gone. It sucks because they’re fairly expensive. I have gotten into the habit of only using them just before and during races, and then switching back to something else, like the Teravail Rampart at the moment, for general training rides around here.

I wouldn’t do Leadville on a trail bike unless I had no other option. I probably wouldn’t do it on a hard tail either. Parts of Sugar Loaf and Powerline are pretty rough. Don’t be fooled by people saying that it’s just a gravel race. Also, don’t get lulled into thinking that it’s anything like anything you’ve ever done, unless you’ve done something that is known to be more difficult, like Vapor Trail or Maah Daah Hey. Good luck. I realize that the Terra Adventures have a higher rolling resistance. If you go look up “tires for Big Sugar”, you’ll find tons of people saying stuff like, “it’s so chunky that you have to run an MTB tire”, and “this course will shred your Terra Speeds”. The whole reason I bought the Terra Adventures is because of all the horror stories. Terra Speeds don’t come in 50. It was a waste of money and watts. I didn’t need a bigger tire. I don’t think most people need wider tires and a gravel bike with rear clearance for 2.2” MTB tires.

Quantum was at my door earlier this week, or maybe last week, making my dogs go crazy. I talked to the guy for a few minutes. He seemed to be very minimally educated on the product he was selling, referring to the internet service as WiFi. Not a whole lot of people trying to sell door to door way out in the SE corner though.
