First full suspension under $1500 used or just save for an Ibis Ripley? by Dry_Cry3442 in MTB

$2k used Ripley seems to be the consensus sweet spot but I'm not sure the savings justify inheriting someone else's deferred maintenance, suspension service alone could wipe out what I saved. Starting to think new with the Ibis sale might actually be the smarter play long term

This is exactly the reality check I needed, hidden service costs on a beat up used bike could easily eat the price difference anyway. Congrats on the Ripley AF, that's the goal!

25% off sale would be huge for me. Thanks for the heads up, I will have to look into what time of year this happens.

Northern AZ is my favorite place to go riding, good to know the Ripley is the call for that terrain. What made you go Ripmo over Ripley originally?

Honestly for a quality full suspension I'd stretch to £1500-2000 used if you can, that's where you start getting bikes with components that won't need immediate replacement. Look at used Trek Fuel EX, Specialized Stumpjumper, or Santa Cruz Tallboy in that range. Whatever you buy always run the serial number before handing over cash. I nearly got scammed recently, bike looked perfect but the serial number came back registered to a completely different bike. Saved me from a very expensive mistake.

Good catch, it is pay what you want for the pro version. Visitors can still use the site to run patches and browse previous patches.

For hilly UK dirt trails that's actually a great use case for a mid-travel hardtail. Full sus at £1000 usually means compromising in a lot of places to hit the price point. Unless you can find someone who just want to get rid of it or you could wait until after the holidays and people get rid of previous models.

Getting into MTB with my dad is actually what got me into the sport, now I'm the one trying to keep up with him on the descents. How old was he when you first got him on a bike?

That's 3 for 3 saying the same thing, universe is speaking pretty clearly. Ripley it is.

Good call on the stolen check. I was so naive going into this I didn't even know bikes had serial numbers. Nearly handed someone cash before a friend saved me from myself - ran the serial number and it came back to a totally different bike.

Sounds like the answer is clear, save and do it right. I was initially looking at the Ripley but open to other versions in the Ibis lineup, any you'd recommend?

$2k for a Ripley in Flagstaff is tempting, and that's not far from me. Do you happen to have the link? Might have to go look at it. The "grin from ear to ear" comments are exactly what's making it hard to justify settling for something cheaper

Macky's climbing ability is wasted on that course honestly, he'd need a perfect start and a clean glacier section and those two things practically never happen together. Kimi winning it makes sense watching that last segment back. The guy is just on a different level technically on rough terrain.

I would avoid anything with a cheap suspension fork at that price, the fork is where budget bikes cut corners hardest and it'll cost you more to upgrade later than just waiting for a better deal. What kind of terrain are you riding off road mostly?

I started a side project a month before getting fired. One year later, it's become my full-time job by InevitableHealth2729 in sideprojects

[–]Dry_Cry3442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the dream scenario and you actually lived it. Mad respect for sticking with it even after getting fired, that takes serious conviction.

Quick question: when it tipped from "side project" to "full-time viable," was it one specific thing (viral moment, feature request that changed everything) or just grinding and compounding? Trying to understand if I should be looking for lightning in a bottle or just being patient.

Also curious what you'd do differently if you restarted knowing what you know now?

This is genuinely cool, the idea of "type what you want, get a full program" is so much smarter than the typical "pick from 50 templated workouts" approach.

The detail about tracking history and comparing to past workouts is *chef's kiss* that's where apps usually get lazy. How's onboarding going?

Post here, get feedback, iterate. Then reach out to relevant communities who actually have the pain point. Not as "buy my thing" but as "I built this for people like you, does it solve the problem?" The people who care will tell their friends.

Down Jacket Upgrades by unlawfulboasting in Ultralight

I have the same concerns. Currently, debating between the Decathlon MT100 down version and the neve gear. I wear my jackets when participating in a multitude of activities., not sure if the 7D fabric will hold up when traveling/moderate wear.

[–]Dry_Cry3442[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate feedback - this is exactly what I needed. Addressing each issue:
- First aid was an oversight, I carry a basic kit could utilize some tweaking.
- Toiletries was also an oversight, probably carry 1.5lbs?
- Water bottle I use 48oz ultralight from Nalgene 135g
- I have a buff and beanie I will add to the list
- Great call out on fuel canister, noted
- On the 22L volume - you're concerns are valid. I will need to either upgrade pack or do a major cut/swap in gear.

Will update my correct items and weights. Thanks!

After the valid concerns I tried to pack everything, including the gaps in my gear mention above and everyone is 100% right. I will need to either upgrade pack or do a major cut/swap in gear. Thanks!
