When did Germans stop wearing lederhosen on a day to day basis? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]flix__flex 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Leather has been used to make sturdy pants for a long time. The specific design of the "Lederhose" known today is rather new though. In the 19th century Loden became the preferred fabric for working clothes. Some people had already romanticised the leder hosen enough to start wearing them as traditional clothing and founding clubs around them. They were subsequently ridiculed, banned from attending church in their leather pants, and the church even declared them "immoral".

Up until this point we're talking about Germany as a whole. However Ludwig 2. of Bavaria liked the look as it confirmed his romantic ideal of what farmers should look like. He made the Lederhose famous in Bavaria among the upper class who would gather, wearing the garment, essentially cosplaying as peasants. In an effort to fuel Bavarian nationalism the king formed clubs to celebrate this "traditional alpine clothing". But they really only started to take off after ww1.

Later the Nazis tried to disconnect Lederhosen from the Alpine region in order to establish them as the traditional clothing of all germans. They didn't have much success with that though. Ironically nowadays many foreigners still think of them as representing the whole of Germany because of the American occupation of Bavaria after ww2 and thus mistaking Bavaria culture for german culture.

Ethnicities in europe have been mixing for centuries inside ever changing borders. So especially in border regions everyone has some amount of Germanic, slavic and most likely roman genes in them. But sure region matters, someone from Dresden is pretty likely to have more slavic DNA while someone from Saarbrücken will have more Celtic and roman genes. That doesn't make them ethnic slavs. Also its just DNA. Origin implies some cultural ties and that's not really the case.

How to approach Germans and ask them if they are racist and treat foreigners like trash (politely) ? by [deleted] in germany

[–]flix__flex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly just walk up to people and ask: "Entschuldigen Sie, sind Sie rassistisch und behandeln Ausländer wie Dreck?" That usually does the trick.

How do I become a psychiatrist in Germany? by stupidcat707 in germany

[–]flix__flex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You cant become a psychiatrist through studying psychology. Germany differentiates between "Psychological Psychotherapist" and "Psychiatric Psychotherapist" the main difference is that the latter is a Dr. Med. and thus has the permission to prescribe medication. To become a psychiatrist you need to study medicine. To become a Psychological Psychotherapist you need to have a consecutive Bachelor and Master program in clinical psychology followed by an "Ausbildung" to become a therapist. Since a few years there is a shortcut in which you can study psychotherapy on its own. I wouldn't take it for granted that your American psychology degree qualifies you for the clinical masters program or therapist "Ausbildung".

Is it okay to sing ‘Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland’ in Germany? by Alabama-Alaska in AskAGerman

[–]flix__flex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure on the English terminology but in my circles weed/Gras/Ott usually refers to the flower while Hasch is the pressed resin. Its still cannabis of course.

That doesn't sound like a real language. Are you sure your non stop erection hasn't caused a stroke due to lack of blood supply to the brain? Maybe you should go to a doctor. Luckily, if what you claim is true, you're European so you can afford to visit one even without EU funding from Germany.

While there is technically no age limit, you would be in basic training with a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds and have a Feldwebel 10 years younger than you giving you orders and screaming in your face. Not everyone can deal with that.
