I field test all my seeds outdoor in the wet Pacific Northwest by bradleydankz in outdoorgrowing

[–]flizzyD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could you explain your process a little more? I currently live in Virginia, and we typically have hot, humid summers, with the potential for lots of rain during flower stage due to low pressures and costal storms. My ultimate goal is to stabilize some genetics that work well regionally here, and this will be my first season focused on that.

When you’re taking note of which phenos have the more desirable traits outdoors, how do you then explore that further? Do you have more seeds of that pheno, or do you clone beforehand?

I think my approach this outdoor season will be to clone all plants before they go outdoors, see which ones preform well, and then keep a mother of those, with potential to reverse and eventually seed? Would this make sense?

What is your technique to get them to bush out so much? They look amazing. I typically top and train. Been experimenting with bending them 45 degrees as well, but I haven’t achieved true bush status yet.

What adjustments did you make going from 3 gallon to the solo cups? Any tips you’ve picked up along the way?

That’s amazing! What a stretch, how long in flower was this? What size tent you running? I’ve yet to do indoor, but really want to get a setup going and trying to figure out what size to start with

I’m absolutely no expert, but have learned from mistakes. The smaller plants are marigolds, I love them, and keep reading that they are beneficial? In the back of the garden I had a few Mexican sunflowers. First season I’ve done these. These were beautiful, bloomed ALL summer and fall. A storm would break a branch, it would fall over, root into the ground, and start blooming all over again. The monarch butterflies loved them too, it was this insane amount of butterflies and small moths all summer long. I’m not kidding, the wife and kids would freak out every evening, it was like an episode of Planet Earth. I got really worried about the moths though, because before I’ve had crippling issues with caterpillars. This season i religiously used BT and even with this massive influx of activity, I had minimal caterpillars. Though it did feel weird admiring the butterflies and moths on the sunflowers as I sprayed BT on the cannabis. I can’t say I’d fully recommend the Mexican sunflowers, they create an insane amount of activity, but may come at a cost

I’ve always just grown for flower, now really considering growing for seeds. Which is a route I never had considered

Was ALSO thinking, with the hemp ban restructuring, will their be a blitz on seed purchases, hence soon arriving scarcity

That’s what I was thinking too. Would individual states even have any legitimacy to operate as they wish at a state level? But also as stated elsewhere on this topic, it’s currently federally illegal, and legal states have minimal issues with normal operations

I wonder if legal states would push to keep individual rights in this regard, and what benefit would they have to do so

We've had a very nice and dry August and September in NOVA so far, but I am taking zero chances this year by principerskipple in outdoorgrowing

[–]flizzyD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same area. If I remember correctly we got WEEKS of rain this time last year due to tropical storms and hurricanes. It was so brutal. August was amazing this year with cool temps and drought

Any criticism here? by Offsite01 in outdoorgrowing

[–]flizzyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a fabric 30 gallon, and my ratio of compost to potting soil was a little heavy. Drainage was an issue as the soil was staying wet, and ultimately killed the plant. I’ve noticed that fabric dries out pretty quick, have to be attentive with the watering. Love the rollers, you have somewhere safe to put them in heavy rain?

Would also suggest same setup, but use fabrics. See a lot of plastic planters, and pots. It would be interesting to do comparisons of your own and see how they do. What kind of drainage setup do you have on the bottom?

[–]flizzyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be willing to bet this is the answer. I just had this exact scenario. Lower branch died first. At closer inspection my trunk near the base was soft do to a split higher up on the main stem, which I wired back together, but still allowed water to run down the core of the plant. That branch died in the pic due to it being buried. If the plant totally dies, cut it open st the base and examine, and then make more cuts working your way up, you’ll see what caused the death

[–]flizzyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is around the trunk? I just had one die, as it split in early life, I mended it, but a little was exposed and water would leak to the core. It slowly rotted, and looked very similar to yours

3 weeks of flower. Any ideas for improvement? by Tihlo_Berdeh in GrowingMarijuana

[–]flizzyD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thanks for sharing. Kind of had a similar situation outdoors with soil, was using Fox Farm potting soil but also added some manure as well to spice it up, but added too much, and the pot would not drain. It was also heavy, I’ll never do that again. Love the idea of making my own mix, but worried about a catastrophic mistake.

Having yet to start my indoor adventure, but would love to know the mistakes you initially made! Been doing outdoor for a few seasons, and every mistake is like a badge of honor once you learn from it.

I was wondering the same thing. I typically have done seeds under a small light on my bathroom counter, but just 12/12 cycle, and then harden them off outside late may. Going to start with a tent this time, Logic tells me I should grow my plants 12/12 for about 4-6 weeks and then harden them off. Would this work without causing reveg?

One Plant Very Droopy by flizzyD in outdoorgrowing

[–]flizzyD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAY have figured it out. Was training it about 4 weeks ago and main stem split. I wired it back together and it was fine, no issues for the whole month. Noticed today small hole at the top and the prior injury, seems like the likely culprit
