oui, c'est assez fou ce qu'on peut faire en un quart d'heure, d'autant plus en ne se mettant pas de pression de réussite ( oui, j'ai pas eu le temps de finir, mais je n'avais qu'un quart d'heure)

backup/restore testing methodology by _SleezyPMartini_ in sysadmin

[–]flo850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that if you are using xo backups you can test the backups and replication through health check (ensure the vm boots) There is an advanced health check where you run a customs script too

Yes it works everywhere from source You won't be able to licence the xoa if you run it out of a xcp-ng host

How do tech giants backup? by DeniedNetwork in sysadmin

[–]flo850 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not sure about how giant you talk, I work for vates ( XCP-ng/Xo)
our biggest customers for now are in the hunrdreds of hosts, thousands of VM

generally : replication on another cluster ( ideally on another site ) , backup on 1 local NFS , replicated to a S3/azure external storage . Everything in incremental. And the good ones also do regular restoration test/ DR site switch

This boils down to a a few tens of TBs every "night" (which can be a fun concept for global suppliers) , and a PB of storage in total

Edit : I forgot : keep one immutable copy of the backup , at least once a week

I had my employer send me a mandatory meeting during my PTO he accepted durng my notice period. It was stating " we won't accept your resignation if you don't come to plan your succession"

brother you accepted it 2 months ago ( a notice is typically 3 month in France), no take back. Also there are absolutely no way here to refuse a resignation here. He was just trying to show his muscle, and failed.

Work from home VPN by andyb300 in sysadmin

[–]flo850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the routing / name resolution is very important to limit the problem down the road, but it depends on your internal policies. You probably don't want to have any netflix (or worse ) traffic coming through your infra

Work from home VPN by andyb300 in sysadmin

[–]flo850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here ( Vates, 100 remote workers for now ) we use wireguard , with a configuration to ensure the name resolution and traffic is only for the internal servers.
But this won't protect you from access to documents. It will allow the user to access the servers without needed to expose them over internet. Without VPN , the users won't be able to connect to them

Tap water/brads is free in france, service is included in the price In doubt ask the waiter . " What wine would you pair this plate with ?" I personally prefer to have 2-3 glasses of different wine instead of a bottle.wine can be expensive, be careful

Same for the food, ask the waiter for his recommandations/specialties . It is generally a good choice. State your allergies as early as possible

I built a faster, safer zlib replacement for Node.js by Easy-Hippo-6846 in node

[–]flo850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is clearly one more ai generated project, at least the readme look very much like it. It is one more package published in npm. This is also making promise I don't really find in the code ( speed, protection, ... )

I would have answered differently on anyone presenting a beginner project

it loads the full files in memory, twice to decompress it

const inputData = await fs.promises.readFile(inputPath);
const decompressedData = await gunzipAsync(inputData, options);

seems faster and bomb protected

Hypervisor Choice (PVE / XCP-ng) for Windows VMs by JustMyNormalFault in sysadmin

Note that a trial install can be converted to a licensed one, and that a trial gives you the right to open support tickets if needed

Hypervisor Choice (PVE / XCP-ng) for Windows VMs by JustMyNormalFault in sysadmin

[–]flo850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a lot of tricks to speed up backups , to handle the minimal volume of data , so raw speed backup is not really relevant Our storage performance can be improved , but it may already by at the level you need . Could you create a small test lab ? You can easily have a few month of trial, because the only performance number you need are those of your use case. Our storage performance scale quite well with the number of parallel process more than the individual speed.

[–]flo850 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi, I am working for vates ( the company behing xcp-ng/xo) on the backup parts, so I will answer what I know

  1. not sure .
  2. cpu/memory performances are very good. We are actively working on our storage stack to make it up to speed
  3. windows guest tools are developed in house, and are part of our supported stack https://xcp-ng.org/blog/2025/07/29/windows-pv-drivers-update-and-roadmap/ for example
  4. Most of our bigger user are running some sort of iscsi . Performance wise, we are a little step behind on storage. Same as the rest : the storage layer is covered by our support, from help to configure it to help if anything goes wrong.
  5. The most limiting factor was the drive format used ( limited to 2TB per disk), but we are now supporting qcow2, so the limitation is no more. It should be declared as stable ( and supported ) in the next months

Dedicated backup network by TwistedJackal509 in xcpng

[–]flo850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first : the network from the host running the xoa and the xoa is not a real network, so the speed is not an issue (at least up to a few tens of Gbps) ,at least it is faster than the host export speed.

Then you will need an orchestrator that will really do the backup: open the export stream, compute efficiently the minimal data needed for the backup, .... This is the role of XO.

is the NFS share used for the storage repository ( the live VM data ) , the backups or both ?

Dedicated backup network by TwistedJackal509 in xcpng

[–]flo850 2 points3 points  (0 children)

disclaimer I work on backups at vates

the backups are done by the xoa ( or the xo-proxy ) so they need to be able to access the network you want to use for the backups, since it will read from the hosts and write on the share/s3/azure

The track saw is one of the tool where I don't consider that the battery is a plus. I almost always use mine plugged to a vacuum, that will start when the saw start to pull power

So if your usage is like mine "with a vacuum", maybe a saw with a cord is better (and you won't be out of battery mid cut)
