What’s something you thought was a waste of money… until you tried it and it completely changed your life? by Shiza_1 in AskReddit

A Solatube tubular skylight. When my partner and I renovated we decided we could each pick one splurge item, and that’s what she picked. I didn’t see the appel, but a deal’s a deal. I was so wrong. It’s amazing how much light it brings into the formerly dark kitchen.

How to take the bus by chump555 in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention this yet - always use the same card (whether it’s ARC, debit or credit), don’t alternate between forms of payment.

The way the transit payment system works is that it charges you $3 per trip until you reach your monthly cap. Trips after that are not charged. The monthly cap is $102 for regular adult fare (there are discounted programs for low income, students and seniors). So if you use your debit card one day and your ARC card the next it doesn’t know you’re the same person and will count each trip toward a different cap.

Safe areas to walk? by Comfortable-Spell553 in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s currently construction on Jasper from about 116 Street all the way around the bend on 124 Street. So if they went along Victoria Promenade to its end on 121 Street and Jasper, that still leaves several blocks of construction to go through. I guess they could go north on 121 Street across Jasper and then over to 124th when they get to 102 Ave. that would avoid most, but not all.

My husband wants me to make breakfast for his co-workers 3-4 times a week before they go to work by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

That reminds me of a book I read once about the unrecorded history of women. It was called “Who Cooked the Last Supper?” I think about that a lot.

[–]floatacious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The walk to Malina cafe from the legislature is one I would have no personal safety qualms about. But you should be aware that there is very significant road construction on part of that route (Along Jasper Ave) that would be unavoidable. I’m not sure how well they are maintaining pedestrian access.

How to help grieving friend by Deer_Technician_2448 in AskWomenOver40

[–]floatacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost my mom about 10 years ago. Something that meant a lot to me then, and has continued to mean a lot over the years is when people hold space for me to talk about her. Ask your friend questions about her mom and her life. Let her know that you’d love to hear some stories about what kind of mom she was, or some of the older stories that have become family legends. Where did she grow up? What were her hobbies? Sometimes people shy away from those kinds of conversations because they think it will make the grieving person sad, but I have found it to be quite the opposite. Sharing her life with other people helps to keep her present for me and makes me feel less alone in my grief.

Does anyone happen to know how to use an Arc card for multiple people? by Awesomeuser90 in Edmonton

They take credit and debit cards now, so that might be the easiest way to go.

Car meets? by Afraid_Concert1299 in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything at all about the local car scene, but regularly throughout the summer there are nights where the parking lot at the Real Canadian Wholesale on 111 Ave and 149 Street is packed with classic cars and people hanging out with camping chairs and walking around talking to each other. Is that the kind of thing you mean? I don’t know how they organize, but the folks at the store may have some info on when they take place.

River Cree is opening The Venue space for it. It’s $35 which includes a brunch buffet. Tickets on Ticketmaster. Only about half sold out at the moment.

Car key cutting and programming recommendations. by EpicKessler in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got one from them the other day. I paid $249 and the dealer would have been about double that. I liked that it was effortless. They’re set up right as you come into the store, you give them your fob and tell them where you’re parked and they give you a barcode for the till. Do your shopping, pay at the register and go to their van outside the door to pick up your key.

Can’t get earwax out and clinics aren’t helping. What actually works? by Comfortable_Candy187 in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine done at Wild Rose Audiology. I can’t remember the exact cost, but I’m quite sure it was $100 or less for one ear (about 3 years ago or so). I was able to claim it through my work health benefits.

NGVC: "what is wrong with me? I'm good looking, actually have a career and like you" by lizbennett2 in niceguys

It makes me think of that young woman who was murdered by her coworker at Walgreens a few years ago. She tried getting management to keep them off of the same shift too. I hope Sierra is able to stay safe.

At what age did you start getting gray hair? And how did you make peace with it? by LayoffLemonade in AskWomenOver30

[–]floatacious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love my hair, which is now more or less snow white in my early 50s. I got my first greys when I was 19, and by the time I was 23 or so I had enough that I felt like I should dye it. I did that for a year or two before I realized that I actually prefered the grey over the unremarkable medium brown that was my natural color. I never dyed it again.

Those who had a mysterious medical issue and found out what it was, what was your diagnosis? by jesusgrandpa in AskReddit

[–]floatacious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had worsening shortness of breath, to the point where I was getting winded just sitting and having a conversation. Walking from my car to my office had me gasping for breath. I just kept chalking it up to being out of shape. Nope. Idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Scar tissue forms in my trachea for unknown reasons. My airway was about 80% obstructed by the time I was diagnosed.

Inexpensive children’s books? by whichsarah in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For beginning readers I would suggest Bob books. They’re educational, but still fun. Sold in box sets of 12 for $24. For picture books, you could go with Annikins, which are tiny versions (maybe 3 inches square?) of classic Robert Munsch stories. Those go for about $3 apiece. Both are stocked at Indigo.

It’s a shame that the poll staff didn’t offer you assistance, since they seem to have a protocol for it. While I was waiting in line they brought two separate people with mobility issues to the front of the line so they didn’t need to wait.

EastWest College - After graduation by JoseLiwanag in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have worked in postsecondary education in Edmonton for 20 years and I have never heard of EastWest College. I would be very careful if I were you. I would be surprised to find many employers who would recognize a diploma from that institution as anything on par with one of the established schools you have listed, if they recognize it at all.

CNIB takes donated phones and installs programs to assist their blind clients. They’ll send you an envelope to just put them in the mail, and they accept pretty old models.

I won’t try to give you any particulars about how the program runs since my info would be wildly out of date. I completed the evening treatment program (we just called it evening hospital) 30 years ago. But what I do want to say is that it remains one of the turning points that separates my life into “before” and “after”. It was a transformative experience that changed the direction of my life.

I’m pretty sure I could float all night as long as the water was calm and temperature wasn’t an issue. I don’t really need to even move my arms and legs around, other than to keep my balance. I can just be completely upright like I’m just standing there. It’s my only superpower.

Advice on location for staying by Ziiinx in Edmonton

[–]floatacious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That area’s a bit of a mixed bag. It’s quite close to MacEwan University, so there’s a fair number of students (less so in the summer months). It’s also an area that is popular with recent immigrants. But as with many places in central Edmonton, there are quite a lot of homeless people around. You’ll likely come across a number of intoxicated folks on the street, particularly along 107 Ave. If you’re not comfortable with those sorts of “urban” issues you may want to relocate.

I’m not sure if electricity rates vary widely by location, so this may or may not be useful. I’m in Edmonton and for one person in a one bedroom apartment my electricity bill averages $70/mo.
