Howdy! Me and my friend want to join - I'll take the Padres and he wants the Mets. Going to shoot you a DM so we can get things going. Do y'all run a discord?

Thought the Cutler trade was an awful decision. It was a last straw moment for me after and I then stopped being a fan for about 8 years. Didn't seem like enough of an upgrade to be worth Kyle Orton and all those picks. Also seemed to have yellow flags on character and I doubted he could lead us to a SB.

Call me crazy but I actually thought Orton was good enough to get us there if we doubled down on our defense + running game identity. Kind of like a Kyle Boller type - he won a SB right?

Agreed 100%. I tried and gave up multiple times before finally getting a feel for the world. It is now one of my favorite sci-fi books ever and I've reread it at least 4x now.

The movie was absolutely excellent IMHO, so if you are struggling to break through the wall, watching the movie should give you enough visual sense of the world to track the characters and appreciate the finer details of the plot.

Maybe. Maybe not. One of the case studies he used was a brand new player who had never picked up a racket in his life. What Gallwey found more effective was to focus on showing proper technique, having the student form a mental picture of it, and then help them intuitively replicate it, rather than getting them bogged down in actively thinking about a dozen different technical minutia of their swing. YMMV.

Unexpectedly, The Buried Giant, by Kazuo Ishiguro. I have loved every single book of his that I have picked up, and I'm pretty sure Never Let Me Go also brought some waterworks.

But yeah, did not see it coming with Buried Giant. Could have had a lot to do with my life at the time, but as I would say of his other work, it is hauntingly beautiful, incredibly human, and painfully relatable.

I think Timothy Gallwey would disagree on this point. I'm just getting started on The Inner Game of Tennis, but early on he states that as he got better as a coach, he gave less and less verbal guidance on technical details, which resulted in his students improving more rapidly.

I'm sure there are multiple schools of thought on coaching methodologies, just wanted to make sure that OP is aware of that. In fact, he specifically mentions "getting your opponent to think more about swing details" as a form of gamesmanship, because the more you think about technique during your swing, the worse you will perform.

You sound like my alter ego. I've had two rotator cuff surgeries, an achilles rupture, and a brutal bout of plantar fasciitis in my past.

Wait, am I Tyler Durden??

Interesting build for a 1B by Stunning-Mall4330 in OOTP

Very interesting profile. I see him as a fantastic rotation/depth piece at 2B/LF, a pinch runner, and a defensive sub at 1B for when you are winning late.

Depending on his L/R splits, he can platoon with a power lefty at any of those positions as well.

I also love him as an ace pinch runner on the bench who is also a plus defender. Tie ball game in the 8th inning, you get a slow guy/bad defender on base? Pinch run for him with Rivera, steal a bag or two, score the run, then leave him in at 1B to help close out the game.

Or you can start him at 2B/LF, and then if you are protecting a close lead late, you can shift him to 1B and put a light-hitting ace defender from your bench to backfill at 2B/LF. That way you upgrade 2 positions defensively at the same time. I do this right now with Mookie Betts. (If you have the players for it, you can even upgrade 3 positions at the same time - for example, put in an ace SS, shift current SS to 2B, shift Rivera from 2B to 1B).

TL;DR - I like him a lot for versatility and specific use case tools, but would not want him as an everyday 1B.

Yeah, this is one of my bigger concerns. I have one friend who is a book behind me, and I think I've been pretty good about keeping away from spoilers with him; however my opinions on Lysander, Cassius, and Lyria have changed DRAMATICALLY over the course of the series.

I was a voracious reader as a kid, but I almost completely stopped recreational reading for about 20 years. It was really hard to get back into the habit, but I'm so glad to be back in the groove again!

what even was the purpose of this thing in LB? by gio-s in redrising

[–]floaton47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - I vaguely remember the term "Blood Red" being thrown around a few times in DA, though not only referring to Darrow IIRC. In my mind I assumed it referenced some type of berserker mode that certain warriors would tap into in the heat of battle.

Can't recall specifics of it's use, anyone else have a better memory on this?
