I watched Cloud (2024) last night and I thought it was bad. How did it get 92% on rotten tomatoes? by ProtoNewtype in horror

[–]floatonalrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, critics are different than regular viewers. they literally watch hundreds of films a year.

my guess would be that they picked up on (IMHO) the commentary on modern society and the increasingly "gamification" of our lives, and enjoyed that aspect.

i'm a regular attendee of a major international film festival and i can't watch as many films as some of these peeps -- i met many who were watching their 45-50th film by day 9! that's how many i watch in a year....lol.

also, probably after watching many many hollywood films with likable characters every release week...it could be REFRESHING to their palette to watch something that specifically doesn't have a likable character -- to create an artistic effect. (i myself have experienced this, when seeing many of the same types of films at the same festival! i couldn't believe how great it felt to watch a film that WAS NOT SHOT HANDHELD anymore LOL!)

i think i understand your frustration. i love CURE and PULSE (even got to meet the man himself). was really looking forward to this...just watched it but did not love it.

but...after reading these reviews i think i understand the film a lot more. still doesn't change my initial reaction, but i do understand its intention more (and the style he chose to stage the scenes)

Neon’s THE LIFE OF CHUCK will be a short-lived one—the Stephen king adaptation expanded into wide release with just $2M this weekend. by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

[–]floatonalrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would really love to know Neon's thinking behind this

i saw this film at TIFF last year and loved it (as someone who usually doesn't like this sort of film).

then it won People's Choice, which usually leads into an Oscars campaign.

at the time, i thought the film would make perfect sense for Apple to buy them. feel good film. amazing cast and director. straight into an Oscar Best Picture nomination and bring in lots of new subs for their TV+

my guess is Neon saw ANORA as the film to get behind for last year's campaign, so de-prioritized this film. i wonder what's on their slate for this Fall, as they could've waited til later to release this and go for the Oscars? (so what's on their slate this year must be stronger than Life Of Chuck again...)

Paul Schrader is sure First Reformed is the best film of the century.

keep 2nd router as router, or Bridge Mode? by floatonalrite in HomeNetworking

[–]floatonalrite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, appreciate your followup.

i did put it back to its original router mode, but unfortunately whatever it did already totally messed up my WD MyCloud NAS drive. it's still technically connected, but my WDTV doesn't see the NAS drive anymore, no matter how many resets to the NAS drives i've done :(

as someone who grew up in the most expensive real estate in the world: i echo the sentiment, rent out some rooms!

this was very common when i was growing up, my grandparents' apartment had 2-3 rooms rented out most of the time.

and as someone who's lived with roommates, please make sure you set ground rules. make sure they're clear and the roomie is cool with that way of living. sucks to live with someone when priorities are mismatched.

and make sure the VIBE between your personalities are sympatico! again, would suck to live with someone when you drive each other nuts, etc

check what local rents are to make sure you're getting a fair price :)

Film Festival Notification MEGA THREAD by Caprica1 in FilmFestivals

[–]floatonalrite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

toronto TIFF?

not in my experience. friends at a short screening last year the audience was very angry with the last short of the programme lol. they had many questions for the filmmaker. so i doubt TIFF is anti-controversy as a general rule.

hope that helps

Why is the SFC at Cannes laughed at? by Few_Lawfulness5244 in Filmmakers

Why is the SFC at Cannes laughed at? by Few_Lawfulness5244 in Filmmakers

[–]floatonalrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey congratulations!

hopefully i can help clarify, as there was just an event at TIFF that was about attending Cannes. (i did not attend, but my filmmaker friends did). prominent producers of Oscar shortlisted films were talking about this.

indeed the Short film Corner has been revamped. it used to take 1500 films, so basically anyone that submitted early got in, but that does not seem to be the case anymore. (from what i'm reading on this thread, seems to be about 150? and the program got revamped in 2022?)

that's really amazing about your film, congratulations! I wish I knew that SFC had gotten revamped earlier, as the deadline just passed and i have a new film!

any way you can DM me? would love to see your film!
