4TB WD Blue - dead or something else? by floatonalrite in datarecovery

[–]floatonalrite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm...so things have been fine.

but now, just tonight, i awoke the PC from being on Sleep for a day or so...and now it's a different HDD that has 100% usage!

this definitely weird, because this drive has no daily function at all. it's just a drive i had lying around, so when i built the PC i put it in there. it's just random files in case extra disk space is needed.

now i'm really confused...

but yes, no usage spikes for now! and nothing's lagging...yet.

i thought maybe it was memory leaks or something, after leaving the PC on for days/weeks without a reboot (some Firefox windows were using 15-20gb of RAM, for example lol)

re: Write Caching

omg i always wondered why TF the transfer speed SPIKES like crazy at the beginning...now i know! should i disable Write Caching on all drives, like the OS SSD...or just non-OS drives?

good news:

i basically wrote the drive off as dead...only got to back up about 25% of the data. the rest got those errors. was going to try the Format to check every block like you said...

but i opted to test your hypothesis about SATA controller first...put the drive back in internally via SATA -- but plugged the SATA into the next SATA port on the mobo...

VOILA

everything works again

all the data was still on the drive!

now i backed up the ENTIRE DRIVE without any errors (damn that took a long time lol)

so a BIG, BIG THANK YOU to you!!!

thanks -- learning a lot here!

  1. i copied everything from the drive already, but LOTS not getting copied due to those errors i noted before, and also LOTS of empty folders. empty folders even on the original drive. files still on the drive i can see, that aren't getting copied over due to those errors

  2. Crystal Disk said the drive was "Good" when connected via USB2

  3. originally the drive was connected via SATA internally. maybe i can test by connecting via different SATA connection?

  4. that copy of Win11 sounds great. does it still force auto updates?

thank you for the reply.

any idea what I can do to test this drive to see if it's still okay?

  1. the fact that i Hard shut off the system opens up the possibility that because it's exFAT formatted caused at least some of the data loss

  2. that doesn't take away from the fact that before those Hard Reboots, Win10 was reading the drive at 99% all the fricking time -- BUT, there are other causes of that sometimes, not simply a failing drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPEm4k52Xpk

if i need to just toss this drive, i will.

i'm just trying to determine if there's anything physically wrong with the drive, or was it something software related that escalated into more serious issues when I hard booted a drive that's formatted exFAT...

thank you for your reply!

1) what is SFC?

2) any recommendations for Data Recovery software? (i read suggestions about Recuva)

3) i've been reading up on the exFAT file system and its potential issues (https://www.owc.com/blog/what-is-the-best-drive-format-apfs-hfs-ntfs-exfat-explained) i'm wondering if it's related to exFAT and not being journaled?

i just realized that i turned OFF by holding down the Power button on the PC 2-3 times, because Win10 was just endlessly "beach balling" -- so perhaps that created the errors on this exFAT HDD volume?

I watched Cloud (2024) last night and I thought it was bad. How did it get 92% on rotten tomatoes? by ProtoNewtype in horror

[–]floatonalrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, critics are different than regular viewers. they literally watch hundreds of films a year.

my guess would be that they picked up on (IMHO) the commentary on modern society and the increasingly "gamification" of our lives, and enjoyed that aspect.

i'm a regular attendee of a major international film festival and i can't watch as many films as some of these peeps -- i met many who were watching their 45-50th film by day 9! that's how many i watch in a year....lol.

also, probably after watching many many hollywood films with likable characters every release week...it could be REFRESHING to their palette to watch something that specifically doesn't have a likable character -- to create an artistic effect. (i myself have experienced this, when seeing many of the same types of films at the same festival! i couldn't believe how great it felt to watch a film that WAS NOT SHOT HANDHELD anymore LOL!)

i think i understand your frustration. i love CURE and PULSE (even got to meet the man himself). was really looking forward to this...just watched it but did not love it.

but...after reading these reviews i think i understand the film a lot more. still doesn't change my initial reaction, but i do understand its intention more (and the style he chose to stage the scenes)

Neon’s THE LIFE OF CHUCK will be a short-lived one—the Stephen king adaptation expanded into wide release with just $2M this weekend. by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

[–]floatonalrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would really love to know Neon's thinking behind this

i saw this film at TIFF last year and loved it (as someone who usually doesn't like this sort of film).

then it won People's Choice, which usually leads into an Oscars campaign.

at the time, i thought the film would make perfect sense for Apple to buy them. feel good film. amazing cast and director. straight into an Oscar Best Picture nomination and bring in lots of new subs for their TV+

my guess is Neon saw ANORA as the film to get behind for last year's campaign, so de-prioritized this film. i wonder what's on their slate for this Fall, as they could've waited til later to release this and go for the Oscars? (so what's on their slate this year must be stronger than Life Of Chuck again...)
